Editorial Reviews

Review

“The latest in this popular series focuses on sophisticated women's accessories, all knit in a merino-silk blend yarn with a soft drape and good stitch definition. . . .  standouts include a pretty beaded choker, a cloche with a bold faux-braided band, and a solid-and-striped infinity scarf. Many of the projects feature intricate cabling, lace, or colorwork, making them most suitable for intermediate knitters comfortable with these techniques, but there's enough guidance and information to allow adventurous beginners to tackle a variety of the projects in the collection with confidence. Written directions are provided for all patterns; charts are included as needed for lace, cables, and colorwork. VERDICT Like other titles in the series, the focus here is on attractive knitwear made with a widely available and affordable yarn, and the majority of the projects are small and quick enough to make them ideal for gift knitting—an ever-popular topic.” —Library Journal

I was so excited when I first received and opened this book. Beautiful designs, colorful yarns, but.... Unfortunately for me, I picked out a #24 project (Cabled Headband). I'm quite an experienced knitter, working mainly with lace and cables project, and I estimated about 5-6 hours for this project. Well, after finishing the first tie, and knitting about 15 rows of the pattern, I realized the edges on my headband look nothing like in the picture. I had to unravel it about 3 times, thinking that it could be my continental way of knitting, and trying different ways of slipping the first stitch and making P increases. Nothing worked, until I finally realized that there's no way to achieve an edge shown in the picture, if I keep following the chart the way it is. The entire chart has mistakes along the edge, including at least 2 increases omitted somewhere between rows 23-35. So, it's been 3 days now, and I finally got to the middle of the band, recalculating, going back a few rows here and there, and manipulating the chart as I go. After row 37 I realized there should be more stitches on my needles than in the chart, as the cabled pattern merged with the edge, when in the picture you can clearly see purl stitches separating them. That's when I realized the picture of this headband was more helpful than a chart. Also, this chart has such lapses as a knit stitch marked as a purl stitch, and vise versa (e.g. rows 43, 46).

I am going to finish this project, as I already have invested so much time in it. I don't know if I will dare myself with another project from this book. Certainly not when I need to knit something quick and easy.

This is a luscious collection of original & inspiring patterns - lace, cable, Fair Isle - for caps, cowls, scarves, mitts, shawls & more. The photography is beautiful - plenty of close-ups & views of each project from different angles so you can really see (& almost feel) each one. Although the designs utilize Cascade's "Venezia" yarns (merino/silk blends & they are truly gorgeous) they're all sport- or worsted-weight, & since most of the projects call for just 1-3 hanks/skeins, you can probably substitute less expensive yarns (but after seeing the photos, why would you want to?). A couple of caveats: (1) The designer uses written directions for some patterns, charts for others, but never both for a single pattern. (2) The majority of the patterns are neither "easy" nor "quick." Almost all of them assume that you have intermediate or advanced knitting skills. These aren't projects you're likely to complete over a weekend, & if you're a beginner, this isn't the book for you. However, the experienced knitter will love it.

These patterns are complicated and should not be labeled "Quick." The projects are lovely, but even though I am fairly experienced, there is nothing quick about them.

This book of knitting patterns has been written expressly for The Venezia Collection from Cascade Yarns. There are some lovely patterns in this book but there are also some that I wouldn't like to knit.

The patterns range in difficulty and style. There are shawls, scarves, hats, mitts, cowls, and even a belt.

As with all knitting books, I ask myself three questions:

Are there patterns in this book that I want to knit?

Are the patterns easy to read?

Is the book a good resource?

The answer to all three questions is 'yes', but not without some qualifications.

I have all of the 60 Quick Knits books by Sixth and Springs and this is the best one yet! Beautiful scarves, clever cowls, and several very interesting knitted belts are my favorites so far. The book features the Cascade Venezia yarn but any sport or worsted weight yarn will make a lovely project. I can't decide which project to knit first.

This book has some really pretty accessories to make. Right now I'm making the hat on the cover, but I'm using a different yarn. These yarns from Cascade are not cheap. Forgot to mention, there are mistakes in this book, and all I did was google corrections to the name of this book, and printed out the corrections.

I have never seen one book filled with so many excellent projects as 60 Quick Luxury Knits. Most books have their best project on the cover and many of the rest usually don't measure up. Not this one. Page after page of fresh patterns for items I would love to make and wear. I definitely got my money's worth.

60 Quick Luxury Knits: Easy, Elegant Projects for Every Day in the Venezia Collection from Cascade Yarns® is another book in Sixth & Spring's 60 Quick Knits series. As the title suggests, this book features patterns designed with Cascade Yarns Venezia Sport and Cascade Yarns Venezia Worsted. About 2/3 of the patterns are in Venezia Sport, with the remaining patterns in Worsted. There is a variety of accessory designs for women, including 20 projects for neckwarmers (9 snoods/cowls/infinity scarves, 8 scarves, 2 collars, and 1 kerchief), 14 hats and headbands, 12 projects for the torso (including 8 wraps/shawls/shawlettes and 4 capes/capelets), 7 armwarmers/mitts/mittens, 2 bags, 2 belts, and individual patterns for legwarmers, socks, and a necklace. About 2/3 of the patterns are at the intermediate level, with 12 easy projects and 3 experienced level projects. All patterns are written with U.S. pattern abbreviations, and 16 also include charts (typically for color, lace, or cables).

The book is beautifully presented and definitely inspires you to start knitting! However, as with all pattern books, you're more likely to enjoy it if you like the patterns included, so be sure to check out all of the projects in this book on its Ravelry source page. My favorites are the Bow Clutch by Devin Cole, the Button Cable Beret by Kim Haesemeyer, the Buttoned Cable Cowl by Angela Tong, the Knotted I-Cord Belt by Alex Capshaw-Taylor, Solid and Stripe Infinity Scarf by Steven Hicks, and the Two-Color Cloche by Elena Malo. Hmmm, I guess it's obvious that I like buttons and cables...

If you're an intermediate knitter who enjoys making women's accessories, this may be the right book for you!
