3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly jammed
Most of overall mechanics are fine but some pages are slightly jammed. I collect many of pop-up books and none of them has this kind of trouble. 3 stars for its creativity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool spots, December 3, 2007

This review is from: 600 Black Spots: A Pop-up Book for Children of All Ages (Classic Collectible Pop-Up) (Hardcover)
A very cool modern art pop-up book. Definitely a supervised only book for the young babes.
I gave it to my friend for her 40th birthday! Fun, fun, fun. Some spots are dangling from strings and some you slide back and forth. The author has hidden some elements from previous books inside.
A timeless classic.

My son and I are enthralled with this book. He is 7 years old. I recommend that an adult supervise younger children. It is a work of art and could easily be destroyed. Our friends (children and adults) are also as impressed with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spots, Dots, Maybe Black Holes, December 6, 2007
This review is from: 600 Black Spots: A Pop-up Book for Children of All Ages (Classic Collectible Pop-Up) (Hardcover)
This is a great book, much bigger than I expected, compared to other pop-up books I've seen. That is a good thing. This book will "wow" anyone who picks it up. A real "must have" for all pop-up book lovers, no matter what the age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pop-up!, January 7, 2008
This review is from: 600 Black Spots: A Pop-up Book for Children of All Ages (Classic Collectible Pop-Up) (Hardcover)
I ordered 600 Black Spots on-line for my nephew for Christmas and used my best judgement based on Amazon reviews about the book. I still wasn't 100% sure about the purchase since I didn't touch it and feel it for myself, but Christmas was looming and I had to get something! My Sister-in-law called me after Christmas to tell me my nephew LOVES the book!

This past weekend, I got the visit my nephew and I saw the book, so I opened it to check it out myself. All I can saw is WOW! What a great purchase!!! The pop-ups in the book are true works of art. They are absolutely beautiful and amazingly intricate. If you are reading this review and seem uncertain about this purchase... JUST DO IT.

So many crazy and beautiful dots, you cant get enough to see more of these dots and the colorful paper architecture. It is a new experience to open this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pop-up smiles, December 31, 2008
This review is from: 600 Black Spots: A Pop-up Book for Children of All Ages (Classic Collectible Pop-Up) (Hardcover)
David Carter says that 600 Black Spots is the third book in his set of five which will feature about fifty kinetic sculptures. I recently bought the first in the series: One Red Dot, loved it and thought I would go for the black dots. Like Red the paper engineering in this latest book is very clever though I think Red had perhaps more creativity in it: one spread had some thin poles actually revolved as the pages were opened, another created clicking sounds as it was opened fully.

Still, 600 has some imaginative visual goodies. The first spread features a fan of paper strips that is so simple yet stunningly effective; spread five has a left-hand page that requires you to lift up five different colored papers with the last piece very cleverly revealing a mirror and a comment about you; on the right-hand page of this spread you can pull two tabs that move a series of colored dots up and down and left to right; the last spread springs a sort of porcupine structure towards the reader.

I thought it was interesting that Carter writes the words after he has finished the sculptures though I imagine he has a general idea about what each book is about. Some of his writing is clearly aimed at adults like the use of `Fauve kaboom' on the last spread of Spots. He says `Fauve' is French for wild animal (the porcupine effect in the pop-up) which critics said had painted some of the works of Carter's favorite artist Matisse. Roy Lichtenstein's pop art inspired the `kaboom'.

The free-form pop-ups in Red Dot, Blue 2 and 600 (plus Carter's two future books to complete his series) will be a remarkable record of what paper engineering can achieve and they leave a smile on your face, too!

Fascinating artwork. A great piece of art doesn't have to hang in a museum. This book gives enjoyment to whoever opens it. Keep it close by so your guests can open it and be amazed and you'll enjoy it again every time they do.
