There's something just plain insulting about assuming girls would be more interested in science if only the instruments were pink. I volunteered to be the "adult supervision" for my niece when this particular Christmas gift made its debut and I had high hopes, even gathering a few extra specimens and a sketch pad for her first session with a microscope.

First off, this instrument is flimsy and fragile. The construction is almost entirely of plastic, making for a very light instrument that tends to wobble while in use. There's a decent carrying case for transportation but the plastic construction makes it less than durable and will likely break quickly in the care of all but the most meticulous children.

The instructions seem thick at first until one realizes it's all translations for a foreign market. There's very little explanation of the features on the microscope and, unless my niece lost it, no exercises, illustrations, or guidance on how to use it, making an adult who is familiar with microscopes necessary.

There are numerous accessories, including extra slides, forceps, and vials, that give it the appearance of a stocked kit, but the extras are cheap and silly, like a plastic scalpel. There's a small bag of brine shrimp eggs and a jar for growing them but few children will likely go so far as to hatch them (just buy your kid Sea Monkeys instead).

The light is weak and the dial to adjust the lighting color is confusing and mostly unexplained. Only the most carefully prepared specimens can be viewed with such a weak source of illumination and the included specimens are few - only two, with blank slides included for a kid to make their own specimens. Instructions and guidance are, again, vague if they exist.

I am an experienced microscope user and this is not a good product. You cant see anything clearly at all. Everything is blurry. The light is not good. The stronger magnifications don't work at all. My daughter asked for one thing for christmas... "A pink microscope". For whatever reason it had to be pink... but this is the only pink microscope available. Don't waste your money. I cant get it to focus on anything. And I have to do all the adjusting etc so she gets frustrated and feels left out. It is very difficult to focus.

It broke right away, at first I thought I wasn't working it right but come to find out it was broke the whole time. Sad face. Come to think of it I should've sent it back and got a new one. Either way next microscope I'm spending the money to get a real, old school, durable one.

Some things you just need to shell out some money for - like a microscope. The minute my daughter pulled this out of the box, I knew it was trouble - cheap plastic construction, lightweight, wobbly stand. Sure enough, when I put the batteries in, the light didn't work on it. It's going back to the store ASAP.
