3.0 out of 5 stars Good song choices but...the riff parts are too short, March 14, 2010

This review is from: '60s Guitar Riffs (Paperback)
I love guitar riffs. They are the driving force behind many good songs. They spark ideas instinctly. It is good for guitarist at all levels to incorparate into their daily practice routine-playing riffs . That means finding a good book to learn from... However this book isn't the one

This book contains the rhythm style riffs of the song and not solo riffs. But the problem is that most of the riffs in this book are cut short. Some of the riffs are played within its entirety but some are just way too short. That's cool for some songs, eg Louie Louie or All Along the Watchtower or Wild Things...but for many of the choices in this book it should have included the entire phrase of the riff. Remember, if these were solos riffs, then short and sweet would suffice. These riffs are rhythm style riffs and "short and sweet" just doesn't cut it. There are better books from this series that are better than this book: The Famous Guitar intros and or Great Guitar Intros. Those books contain more section of the songs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just the riffs - it can be fun and useful, September 7, 2004

This review is from: '60s Guitar Riffs (Paperback)
This book has a good layout and was published by one of the finest in the business. The price is just right if you consider that they have to pay copyrights for everything included.
While it can be fun to go and play those classic riffs, a beginner guitar-player can also use the book as an instructional tool, since there are many styles covered: power chords, arpeggios, single note riffs, etc... You also can improve your rhythm skills and study the riffs a little (what is the implied harmony, what is(are) the scales used, etc)
The book is probably unecessary for an advanced player, who should be able to play those riffs by ear anyways, but I think it is a decent addition to a beginner rock guitarrist. One can set a goal like "I will master 5 of those riffs per week" or something (as a small part of one's practice - of course a budding musician should aim much more than that). It will be fun to play for friends, kind of instant gratification.
