Started out as the guy who would take the extra time to do lunch-and-learns for others at work. Then moved to a job that was 2/3 consulting and 1/3 writing and teaching hands-on workshops, learning what's real and how to do it in a lab. Then to a job as full-time instructor and part time consultant. Finally, started writing it down for all to read. Now writing all the time, with the most most popular CCENT and CCNA Cert Guides since the early days of Cisco certs, all from Cisco Press.

Today, Wendell spends time writing certification guides, textbooks, designing software, and blogging to help those who have all these products. Over the years, the products have ranged from Cisco certs CCENT, CCNA, CCNP, CCIP, and CCIE, all findable here at Amazon.

In addition to various router/switch set-up for a given lab, the simulator also allows you to configure or dump status of connected hosts like PC's.

I have quite a bit of background in networking and telecom switching already, so this review is more from the perspective of what's in the box, and how well it works as a learning and sim tool. Other reviews and the product description already do a good job of explaining the actual content, although I will say this set adds some degree of oblique background or history which may not always be absolutely necessary in passing a CCNA exam, but it did help me see the big picture of why things developed the way they did.

The Odom books by Cisco Press and some terrific competitors like Lammle's are all very good, but I decided on Odom. I searched around for the CCENT/CCNA ICND1 640-822 Official Cert Guide (3rd Edition) and CCNA ICND2 640-816 Official Cert Guide (3rd Edition) books separately, not realizing they also came together with this full version of the Cisco lab simulator in one set, where by 'full' version, meaning it has around 300 preset labs plus the ability to respond to any current Cisco command. I would not characterize any consumer-level publication as having a 100% fully-compatible router/switch simulator, but still, no matter what the lab subject was, I found I could enter any valid IOS command and it responded correctly. In fact, within the labs, I tended to go off on my own and start pinging and ipconfig'ing various devices, just to see if I could break the simulator...nope, not yet! It's well designed. In addition to various router/switch set-up for a given lab, the simulator also allows you to configure or dump status of connected hosts like PC's.

So by no means am I CISCO guru - I use these books for understanding what I currently have to support. I love how the Author equates the basic understanding of networking to The Flintstones. Being a child of the 80's this is perfect for me - It makes me laugh but also keeps me interested in the mundane information.

The book(s) are broken down like most other Cisco Press books. There are the "Do you Know This Already" quizzes that start each chapter. Which I fully utilize!!! There are also reference sections so you can go back if you need to (And I need too!). Then there is the Exam Prep at the end of the chapter. It's the defector for Certification books - which I find very very helpful.

The books are an excellent resource to my collection. They help me learn on the job. I was trying to test for Cisco Certifications but I found they are too complex for me - Give me a Windows Cert and I'll kill it. But that's why I get these books so that I can TRUST the information in them. There are other books for Cisco; however I feel better when I get my info from a Cisco Press book.

Now on to the coolest thing in this package. The Network Simulator. I LOVE this. This helps me SO much. It has so many different labs that you can do - at first it's over whelming. However as you work through them it makes total sense. They start with basic networking and work up to advanced troubleshooting. The software GUI layout is awesome; it allows you to see everything at once. It's a huge resource for me. The simulator helps me understand the concepts by having me doing them, and seeing the results or the failures. This one part of the collection has by far helped me the most.

I would highly recommend this for anyone that is trying to Cert Prep for themselves or to gain knowledge. The simulator is so worth it.

This 2 book, 1 network Sim, set is a MUST for those of you who are preparing to venture down the CCNA certification path. These two books are exactly what you need to help guide you down the path of networking and getting a good hands on feel(thanks to the network simulator) for those of you who have never been on a Cisco switch or router. The books are clear and straightforward and provide all the "facts" that you will need to know for the certification exams. These books definitely help you dig deeper into the areas where the video training courses only reach the surface. The real advantage comes in the form of the network simulator. This is a super handy tool that allows you to walk through labs and allows you to practice commands that you are going to need to know for the ICND1, ICND2, and CCNA certification exams. It is very simple to use and gives you the option of going through each lab in order or build your own network and practice what you know.

I will definitely keep this box set on my shelf at all times. Its a valuable tool for learning and reference.

So far I really like the book and the easy content for beginners. I am preparing for CCNA, already finished Todd lammle book, but prefer this one as has better explanation and the flow, especially for starters like me. As I go through the material more in detail I will update my review.

This set of books along with simulator brings you closer to reaching your certification goals. While the simulator is written in Java, you can still learn quite effectively from it. It serves its purpose. The methodical organization of the books makes learning the complex subject matter palatable. Using the simulator gives you a comfort zone to build on as you are able to utilize the commands that would be used not only on the exam but in your workday as well.

The ability to test what you know and compare it to what you have learned once you have finished the chapters and quizzes helps you solidify your knowledge. The book starts with the basic description of the network function, major components, the OSI reference model and strategically segues into the more intricate matters TCP/IP, subnetting (learn the subnetting well, during the exam you don't want to take a lot of time to figure this out), packet delivery, switches and router concepts as they apply to medium sized networks. The topics that are covered are explained in a language that an inexperienced person can understand. The knowledge of Mr.Odom as to what you are expected to know on the exam, is displayed in this set.

You are tested on every concept in detail to make sure you understand the topic. The exams on the disk may be a little more difficult than the certification exam, which is a positive because knowing the concepts and having a full understanding of the material will allow you to apply what you have learned to the exam questions.

This set improves upon covering more in-depth the information required to pass the exam. The author listens to his readers. The areas that may have had weak coverage in some early editions have now been included in this latest edition.
