Started out as the guy who would take the extra time to do lunch-and-learns for others at work. Then moved to a job that was 2/3 consulting and 1/3 writing and teaching hands-on workshops, learning what's real and how to do it in a lab. Then to a job as full-time instructor and part time consultant. Finally, started writing it down for all to read. Now writing all the time, with the most most popular CCENT and CCNA Cert Guides since the early days of Cisco certs, all from Cisco Press.
Today, Wendell spends time writing certification guides, textbooks, designing software, and blogging to help those who have all these products. Over the years, the products have ranged from Cisco certs CCENT, CCNA, CCNP, CCIP, and CCIE, all findable here at Amazon.

Since the CCNA exam material has not changed content from the 2007 2nd Edition, the publisher has added value to the 2011 3rd Edition with 1) a free CCNA Simulator Lite, which has some disabled commands over the full-priced version, and 2) a 70% discount on the Premium Edition eBook which includes two additional exams' worth of practice test questions. Also, the eBook comes in EPUB and PDF for reading on virtually any device you have. In the 3rd Edition, Mr. Odom has divided the long subnetting section into smaller chapters for easier understanding, and updated any technical data that has changed in the last 4 years. Subnetting can be difficult on the exams, so clearly written study materials to get a handle on calculating subnets, and other related topics, are very important.
There are many excellent charts, graphs, and updated figures and facts of technology changes over the last four years, and the material is clearly written. Each chapter begins with "Do I Already Know This?Read more ›
I have read the previous versions of the CCNA Certification Library and found the revisions to contain numerous enhancements that make the material "pop" even more. As a professional trainer myself, I can attest to the importance of crisp diagrams in the material, and the new/revised illustrations are top-notch. In addition, Wendell's expanded section on subnetting is particularly helpful to those who are trying to master this challenging but essential subject. I personally find that the revised editions add a great deal of value in mastering---or even reviewing---the fundamentals of Cisco networking. It even makes me hope that a revision to the CCIE Routing and Switching book will contain similar updates

I have always wanted to review a book in which I wouldn't have to use terms like `not for the beginners', `power users only', `not the for non - initiated'. People will find it quite hard to believe but the titles I am about to discuss, is more than capable of taking a complete novice to a much more competent level. Networking is a vast, expanding field and for someone who has no prior knowledge and experience, the titles are a great platform to embark on that journey of learning. I will go through this review, in the same trajectory I went through in my mind as I read through the material, and how they appealed to me. I will talk holistically about both titles at the same time, as apart from the subject matter differing for the obvious reasons, they both have the same merits in terms of style, delivery and impact.
I must agree, the hard bound books can be a bit daunting to look at when you take them out of the equally hard bound box. But then one must appreciate the accomplishment of the writer when you go through the material itself. The books are quite sturdy and if any topic should frustrate you, both these books can take a fair amount of beating. But I would advise, it is better to take a deep breath, go away and try to tackle it another day. I find this technique, much better than nursing an injured wrist or even knuckles, while trying to punch them in frustration.
When I started learning about networks a long time ago, I didn't have either of these titles as an aid. And now that I have, I can straightaway know what I was missing out on. I have been in lectures and seminars, where people did their level best to make things complicated and scare me away.Read more ›

Great books. Wendell Odom is a great teacher. Material can be a bit dry for some, but it's a technical field. Dry is part of the job.Published 17 months ago by Ghengis-T
