Book Description

January 1994
This is the history of the Hollywood Academy Awards. It covers the winners for the period 1928 to 1993 and highlights the memorable occasions in 630 photographs. It is an update of "60 Years of the Oscar" and includes a new chapter on the events of the years 1988 to 1993.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Published under the auspices of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this oversized, richly illustrated keepsake features a year-by-year account of the ceremonies from 1929 through 1992, in brief chapters rife with anecdotes, major upsets, and quotations. It includes complete listings of all nominees for each year. If you're seeking muckraking and the inside scoop, look to one of the "unofficial" Oscar books (such as Anthony Holden's Behind the Oscar: The Secret History of the Academy Awards), but this handsome volume does a fine job telling the official story.

From Library Journal

This account, an update of the author's 60 Years of the Oscar (LJ 6/1/89), is organized around decade-length segments of the Motion Picture Academy's history. Each segment opens with a reckoning of the academy's activities followed by a year-by-year roundup of the OscarR ceremonies. All the nominees, plus the technical and special award winners, are listed. Photos abound, many in color. Over 120 OscarR winners, from Frank Capra to Emma Thompson, offer memories of their big night. Libraries should note, however, that the same basic data, with much more behind-the-scenes color, can be found in Mason Wiley and Damien Bona's Inside Oscar (LJ 3/1/ 86).
