Product Description

Amazon.com

This sleek, chrome-finished Krups Belgian waffle maker makes four delicious, deep-pocket Belgian waffles in just four minutes--and the nonstick-coated plates make cleanup easy. A "ready" light indicates when the machine is preheated and set for baking. When your waffle maker first arrives, just wipe the plates clean with a damp sponge, grease them lightly with butter, margarine, or cooking spray, and heat. After seasoning, you can make several batches of waffles without any sticking. The machine stands upright for easier storage.

The thicker batter that's used for making Belgian waffles makes them crispier on the outside. For a dessert with the taste of the carnival midway, try putting a slice of ice cream (natural strawberry works well) between two waffles. --Irene Svete

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes Excellent Waffles if Used Properly August 13, 2007
I was a little worried about purchasing this waffle maker based on a few of the previous reviews, but in my experience it makes great waffles and cleans up very easily. After reading the instructions carefully, it's clear that some of the reviewers misinterpreted the functions of the two lights on the waffle maker. Keep the following in mind and you should be able to make excellent waffles every time:

1. The machine must be preheated until the green light turns off, which tells you that it has reached the correct temperature for cooking.

2. It should then be lightly sprayed, top and bottom, with a cooking oil spray.

3. Add a bit less than 1/2 cup of waffle mix to each section of the waffle maker. Be careful not to overfill - if the batter runs over the sides, this will make it more difficult to clean. A slight run over shouldn't be a problem, though, as it will come off when the waffle is removed after cooking.

4. After filling all the bins, close the waffle maker (do NOT latch the cover down!) and cook for 4:00 minutes (you can go over this by a few seconds for crispier waffles). Do not pay any attention to the lights while cooking - they have nothing to do with cooking time. One simply tells you that the power is on, and the other shows you when the cooking element cycles on and off to maintain temperature. (Yes, I agree that the lights are not very useful at this point.) Just use an accurate timer.

5. Open the lid (I use the latch to avoid touching the handle, which does get somewhat hot, but not to the point of burning in my experience) and use a plastic spatula to remove the waffles.

I also suggest using a quality Belgian waffle mix such as Krusteaz to make waffles as good as any restaurant waffles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Waffles! November 28, 2000
By A Customer
Finally a great Belgian Waffle Maker! We had tried so many waffle makers in search of one that would make the "Diner" waffles that my kids love. "Too light", "Too Dark", "Not Crispy", "Too thick", "Too thin", were the complaints until we found this Krups Belgian Waffle Maker. The waffles come out nice and thick, but are light and crispy and only take about four minutes to cook. It does take some time to clean it after we're all done, but it's worth it! Excellent product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard To Clean January 1, 2001
By A Customer
This waffle iron does a great job with waffles. The problem is that it is very hard to clean. There are to many small clearances around the waffle iron for waffle mix to cake up if the waffle iron runs over. There isn't an adequate drip edge to catch the over flow.

I am going to try the Villaware with the removeable grids. I put whole blue berries into to my waffle batter, and this also requires additional clean up that would be easier if I can remove the grids and put them in a dish pan.

1.0 out of 5 stars Handle too hot! March 31, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase
I ordered one and during use the handle became too hot to touch. I had to open with an oven mit which is very clumsy. I called Krups and they said they have gotten a few calls about this and to exchange it. I asked if my new one will have the same problem and they said "no". Well, I exchanged it for a new one and it had the same problem. Obviously, I returned it and am now shopping for a different brand.

2.0 out of 5 stars To Hot to Handle March 2, 2002
By A Customer
I purchased this new waffle iron since my old Toastmaster was not heating properly. This new Krups is a disaster. All the instructions were followed for first use. We put in the batter and set our timer for the recommended four minutes. The waffle was burnt. The handle was so hot I could not hold it to open the iron and had to grab a pot holder. The hand opening is very small and not designed to have a pot holder in there.
We put some more batter in for the second waffle and set the timer for three minutes. The handle was still very hot and the waffle was dark brown. Dinner is not going well at this stage. The next waffle we tested when the light on the top went out. I still had to use something to open the top but the waffle was still dark.
At the end of cooking there was a puddle, not drops, of water on the counter. It must have come from the steam. Another design flaw is there is no overflow protection.

This baby is going back to the store. I will continue to look for another toastmaster or better designed item.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Waffles, but not a perfect machine February 14, 2006
Okay, the handle does indeed get hot. This is annoying to me and I think calling it a cool-touch handle is a bit insulting to my intelligence. Nevertheless, my kids got this for me for a very reasonable price and it does make excellent waffles. The trick is to get one of those heat-proof silicon brushes to apply oil on the grids and use exactly 1/3 cup of batter in each waffle. Too much batter and it gets very messy, making it difficult to clean. Cook 4 minutes max. I undercook the last 2 batches and then save them in the freezer. The kids get them out and toast them in my toaster oven for breakfast on another morning. I usually use the Krusteaz Belgian waffle mix. I also use a blunt wooden spoon to wedge the waffles out of the grid. I wipe it down as soon as it is cool and it isn't so hard to clean (as long as you don't let batter dribble everywhere. This is where technique comes in. No machine can help you with that. You just have to get it by experience.) It does store conveniently upright in the cabinet. So all in all, for the price, I'm happy with it.
