4.0 out of 5 stars anson's greatest!, April 7, 2003
This review is from: 666 (Paperback)
that's right. better thought of, better built, better psychologically, better plot, more realistic than Amityville. this is anson's real masterpiece. a house is being moved next door to a couple. where does it come from? who lived there before? why doesn't anyone know the owner? mysterious things being to happen, i won't tell you what, but it's interesting read, wll thought of by anson. the plot is good, espescially psychologically. great descriptions at times. the ideas are carried out great, i am among other things referring to the great timing in the book. i won't give away the details, because they are fun to read. so read

4.0 out of 5 stars Something to get an escape, January 22, 2003

Roks (Miami, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 666 (Hardcover)
If you're the devil-lover or a thrill chiller, this should definitely be one of your favorites. Jay Anson did a very good job with the plot of the story, and with a little bit of mystery and thill accompanies with the simple language he used, all make every pages very intriguing. He used many interesting details, and he kept the suspense through the whole book until the end when all hell broke loose...well, I didn't very much like the ending because I want everybody to go home happy, but I shouldn't say much abt it...because the people who are reading this now, well, haven't read this book yet. However, I strongly recommend this book, it's not time consuming at all. I finished it in abt two days...and I'm not even that good in reading. So take a break off of work or school and crush yourself between your busy schedules to get a little escape from the tiresome reality. Good luck and have a great time reading. Besides, I can't recall the names of the characters and can't go into much details abt this book, because, I read this book abt three years ago. But planning to read again soon...just waiting till I forget most of what happened in there. Anyways, the story pretty much revolves around a couple and the wife's best friend who had had a crush on her. The couple lived in a quiet and beautiful neighborhood, until, one day, an old house from 666 street was delivered and put on a property near theirs....and blocked their sunset view...the husband accidentally went in (cause the door opened by itself! Brrrr!) and discovered a mysterious coin from that house...and from then on...everything abt that house and the coin had come to haunt the couple, made their life miserable and full of unsolved mysteries....and this, was where all hell began.

3.0 out of 5 stars 333, December 27, 2007
This review is from: 666 (Paperback)
This old horror chestnut from the early 80's is only half as scary as it thinks it is. Its predecessor, The Amityville Horror, is a legit classic, but there's a reason Jay Anson is not better known for this follow-up novel. This is a pretty standard haunted house story that barely rises to the level of its own stereotypes. The most notable stereotype is the house's owner - your standard evil mastermind with mysterious powers, whose motives are barely revealed and who exists only as a lazy literary device used awkwardly to push the other characters along. The same goes for the prototypical supernatural elements of the story, which are also obligatory literary tools that contribute little to the reader's excitement. These underutilized, archetypal plot devices only make the reader notice the novel's many unresolved questions and missing explanations. Anson is also prone to a clumsy overuse of foreshadowing, which will lead many readers (including myself) to figure out the ending by the middle of the book. The un-shocking climax is then followed by an epilogue that is so forced and contrived that it nearly wrecks the entire book. In fairness, this novel is fun and readable, with pretty good leading characters, and it's great for filling up your rest and relaxation time. But expect the predictable in place of the scary or suspenseful. [~doomsdayer520~]
