This old horror chestnut from the early 80's is only half as scary as it thinks it is. Its predecessor, The Amityville Horror, is a legit classic, but there's a reason Jay Anson is not better known for this follow-up novel. This is a pretty standard haunted house story that barely rises to the level of its own stereotypes. The most notable stereotype is the house's owner...

4.0 out of 5 stars Something to get an escape, January 22, 2003

This review is from: 666 (Hardcover)
If you're the devil-lover or a thrill chiller, this should definitely be one of your favorites. Jay Anson did a very good job with the plot of the story, and with a little bit of mystery and thill accompanies with the simple language he used, all make every pages very intriguing. He used many interesting details, and he kept the suspense through the whole book until the end when all hell broke loose...well, I didn't very much like the ending because I want everybody to go home happy, but I shouldn't say much abt it...because the people who are reading this now, well, haven't read this book yet. However, I strongly recommend this book, it's not time consuming at all. I finished it in abt two days...and I'm not even that good in reading. So take a break off of work or school and crush yourself between your busy schedules to get a little escape from the tiresome reality. Good luck and have a great time reading. Besides, I can't recall the names of the characters and can't go into much details abt this book, because, I read this book abt three years ago. But planning to read again soon...just waiting till I forget most of what happened in there. Anyways, the story pretty much revolves around a couple and the wife's best friend who had had a crush on her. The couple lived in a quiet and beautiful neighborhood, until, one day, an old house from 666 street was delivered and put on a property near theirs....and blocked their sunset view...the husband accidentally went in (cause the door opened by itself! Brrrr!) and discovered a mysterious coin from that house...and from then on...everything abt that house and the coin had come to haunt the couple, made their life miserable and full of unsolved mysteries....and this, was where all hell began.

3.0 out of 5 stars 333, December 27, 2007

This old horror chestnut from the early 80's is only half as scary as it thinks it is. Its predecessor, The Amityville Horror, is a legit classic, but there's a reason Jay Anson is not better known for this follow-up novel. This is a pretty standard haunted house story that barely rises to the level of its own stereotypes. The most notable stereotype is the house's owner - your standard evil mastermind with mysterious powers, whose motives are barely revealed and who exists only as a lazy literary device used awkwardly to push the other characters along. The same goes for the prototypical supernatural elements of the story, which are also obligatory literary tools that contribute little to the reader's excitement. These underutilized, archetypal plot devices only make the reader notice the novel's many unresolved questions and missing explanations. Anson is also prone to a clumsy overuse of foreshadowing, which will lead many readers (including myself) to figure out the ending by the middle of the book. The un-shocking climax is then followed by an epilogue that is so forced and contrived that it nearly wrecks the entire book. In fairness, this novel is fun and readable, with pretty good leading characters, and it's great for filling up your rest and relaxation time. But expect the predictable in place of the scary or suspenseful. [~doomsdayer520~]

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait to get this again., August 20, 2001
This review is from: 666 (Paperback)
I first came across this book when I was about 13 or 14. A couple of years later I found it in the library again and read it a second time. It was just as horrifying and I am currently looking forward to reading it again (as soon as I get my hands on it). I can still recall how terrifying the book was and definately recommend it. Great reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars A simple, straightforward horror novel: pure,fast-paced evil, January 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 666 (Hardcover)
I read this book over six years ago, and I still regard it as one of the most terrifying I've ever read! This isn't a literary classic by any stretch of the imagination, but it does diliver the spine-chilling, duck-under-the-covers fear that affecianados of this type of fiction lust for. Leave the lights on for this one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Anson's second novel doesn't disappoint., May 8, 2001
By
This review is from: 666 (Hardcover)
A house, possessed by an evil force that may be the devil itself, moves about the country, snaring people in its trap, forcing each new tenant into committing a similiar double murder. Can the house's newest owners break the spell before it's too late? It's a fairly nifty premise and author Jay Anson works very hard at building suspense and mystery with it. Some of the nightmare sequences and the ending, especially so, have stuck with me over the years. No classic but a book so well remembered is worth revisiting. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Horror at 666 Sunset Brooke Lane..., May 17, 2004
By
Draconis Blackthorne (The Haunted Noctuary) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 666 (Hardcover)
First he brought us The Amityville Horror, now we are treated to 666. A new level of horror, courtesy of Jay Anson. This one is about a possessed house also, although more prevalently satanistic.

A house appears out of nowhere, strange lights in the middle of the night, a morbid history, a mysterious owner - all the makings of a classic monsterpiece. The house, a dominant mass, effects the environment wickedly, causing a disruption in the seeet little relationship of a suburban couple - hellish yuppie-lust at 666 Sunset Brooke Lane.

The house seems to live & breath, planning sadictic tortures for the unsuspecting mortals.

The infectuous insanity culminates, as the dark prophesy in the hexagonal room comes true. The horror lives on. "Evil" can never be destroyed, only redirected. It always comes back...

5.0 out of 5 stars Jay Anson does it again!, October 26, 2008
This review is from: 666 (Paperback)
I remember reading the Amityville Horror back in high school, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.Years later down the road I was in a old book-store in the far back corner in a stack of dusty, old books.Since the first time I read 666,I realized that Anson not only could make a supposed 'non-fiction'(let's be honest, the Lutz family confessed to making the events that occured in the house a complete hoax but the murders are true and the history of the property has never been actually confirmed).Anyways, this being a fictional novel by Anson it's a true masterpiece and it's a shame his writing career was so shortly lived. This novel actually takes the story of an evil house up a few notches!

3.0 out of 5 stars hey now, September 27, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: 666 (Paperback)
You can't really buy this book expecting a great literary experience. Just take it for what it is, a good way to kill some time. As a haunted house novel it stands, and the ending wasn't
too terrible. It was pretty light, but all in all i'd give it a stamp of approval.
