There are so many diseases out there that one can hardly know them all. And they do tend to affect mostly the people who have no clue whatsoever about them. One of those diseases is GERD, and my mother suffered from it for a long time without even knowing it.

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease as its full name is, is not a new illness. It exists for many many years, and its carriers can be of any age and gender. My mother always complained that she felt a pain in the chest after eating, a pain that as the years went by got worse and worse. The local doctor in her small town couldn't find a problem with her heart, and even though he tried he couldn't discover the source of the pain. "What can it be?" she kept asking me whenever I called her, but of course I didn't know the answer. One day though she sounded in so much pain and so desperate on the phone that I simply asked her to tell me all her symptoms in order to do some research on the net, so that I could find some answers. And I did; answers that lead me to this book.

If you'd ask me to describe this book in a few words I'd have to use my mother's words: "It's a life saver". It tells you all you need to know about the disease, how to treat it and how to improve your health. It came as an answer to my mom's prayers.

I've suffered from heartburn since the birth of my first son - 30 years ago. The information Robert provided about GERDS really hit home. I manage to deal with my heartburn by taking Tums, but I realize I've only been dealing with the symptoms rather than the cause. This book provides the steps to achieve a total lifestyle change that can help me rid my body of GERDS forever.

I've started to keep a Food Diary, as suggested, to understand my triggers. I never realized that my asthma could be a symptom of GERDS as well. I am a runner, so I am part way there with Robert's recommendations on exercising and stress management. But I often jog right after a meal, and now realize that this, along with late night meals, is a prime reason for my heartburn.

My Kindle was an ideal way to read Robert's book. It allowed me to bookmark certain sections and my favorite recipes that I plan to try.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book. It is a quick read with easily understandable information. It provides the steps to cure your acid reflux and to also maintain this new environment, within your body, if you are disciplined and stick to Robert's plan.

In this book, Robert gives an excellent overview, and step-by-step plan for getting rid of your GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease).

What do I like about it?

A few things:

1. I'm a naturally inquisitive person. Like a 4-year-old, I always have to know "why?" This book satisfies that itch. A lot of books just tell you what to do without telling you the reasons why it works. This isn't one of those.

2. As mentioned in the title, it's a shotgun approach. Which means that it's comprehensive. Many practitioners opt for just a single way of managing a condition. This book gives you suggestions on nutrition, supplementation, exercise, stress management, and alternative therapies. Combine all the advice in this book, and there's just no way that you won't get better.

3. It attempts to solve the root cause of GERD. It doesn't just cover up the symptoms.

And not to leave you hanging, there are even 45 great GERD-friendly recipes.

If somebody told me a couple of months ago that I could be suffering from GERD disease I would probably laugh in their face and say: "GERD what?" As you can very well understand I'm not laughing at the moment, but at least I'm smiling, since thanks to this book I have been able to get a fast diagnosis from my doctor, and follow a treatment which made my life, after a long long time, pain-free.

I can't even pronounce the name of this illness, gastroesophageal reflux disease, without getting the chills, since it has given me so much pain in the past. The symptoms it presented at first were neurological, at least according to my self-diagnosis. I had a stiff neck and every now and then a little pain in the chest, but as time went by things got worse. The pain seemed to increase by the day, and at moments I thought I was dying. My first thought was to visit a neurologist, and then a cardiologist, but after I've talked things out with my daughter on the phone she started researching the symptoms and came up with GERD.

Now, that I'm a little older and much wiser, I can do nothing but blame myself for not looking things up right from the start. My reluctance has cost me a lot of pain, but at least my doctor's and this author's advice, have at last set me on the right path. Following instructions is something I do well, and when it comes to my health, it's also something that I do with all my heart; a heart that will keep on beating.

We are preparing for the 7-day diet, however most of the recipes listed do not follow the guidelines and contain meat, dairy, and gluten. There are definitely not 7 days worth of recipes that fit the plan. Now we are left hunting for recipes that fit the prescribed diet.
