Being a woman "of a certain age" and married for 20+ years, I have been cooking for a long time. I admit, I am far from gourmet: I don't specialty shop; I don't watch the TV cooking shows or reality shows starring angry chefs and their desperate-to-please minions; glossy gourmet food and recipe magazines make me nervous.

I do have skills. I have one small shelf of cookbooks in my kitchen. I can cover the basics, having more or less successfully fed and nourished a healthy family of five for some time now. Culled from a 25-year-old, well-worn copy of the cooking classic: BETTY CROCKER'S COOKBOOK (1987), family magazines and, in more recent years, recipe searches on for the iPhone and iPad, I have compiled my very own cookbook: a mish-mash of photocopies, hand-written classics and typed recipes, all carefully preserved in plastic page protectors and haphazardly "filed" in a white, plastic-coated (easy wipe!), 3-ring binder.

However, having said all of that:

Even with my vast and very practical culinary knowledge and experience, I love, Love, LOVE Susan Nicholson's 7-DAY MENU PLANNER FOR DUMMIES! An instant new-NEW classic, this book should be a treasured kitchen bible for every man, woman or young adult trying to prepare and serve nutritious, delicious, affordable and do-able meals for a family, couple or even healthy meals for one.

Susan Nicholson is a registered dietitian and creator of the 7-Day Menu Planner newspaper column, featured in major newspapers and in online syndication, too. She is a culinary professional and a talented writer with a lot of experience and a great sense of humor, which makes 7-Day Menu Planner for Dummies more than just another cookbook.

I'm a huge fan of Susan's column and was sooo happy to see her recipes and ideas collected in a book! The recipes are so easy to follow and everything tastes delicious. I always feel like so many leftovers go to waste, but this book shows you how to make them a regular part of your menu--which is a great $$$ saver! The best part? My family didn't even notice they were eating leftovers! Busy parents will love the step by step menus that take the guess work out of grocery shopping and meals for the week.

I don't cook alot but when I do, I am pretty good at it. Where I get stumped is in creatively and consistently putting together an entire meal.

I had hoped this book would contain information and combinations for complete meals - perhaps some fast for the busy professional self and some more creative for entertaining or family treats. Instead, this book focuses more on stretching the dollar and repurposing leftovers. Evaluating it on those terms, the book does effectively make it's mark and provides suggestions to feed the individual/family for the week with some variety. It is especially good when it comes to reducing the cook's heavy prep to one or two focal dishes a week. However, the book is also supposed to be designed to address a balanced diet and teaching readers a method to conduct their own menu planning. Those topics are handled less effectively, although some of the tips are useful.

As others have indicated, the author provides weekly menu recommendations to last a full year. However, some of the daily recommendations might read as simply as, and this is working from memory so may be a little off, "serve with a salad and potatoes." The creativity is a bit lacking there and potatoes can take time to prepare. These instances occur at least 1-2 times a week.

The book could benefit from a section totally dedicated to rounding out the nutritional value in meals and another to address easy, nutritious, repurposable side dishes, starches, and vegetables. I am assuming e lack of instructions in these cases assumes store bought foods or recipes obtained elsewhere.

I did appreciate the advice provided derived from reviewing the repurposed entrees and tips on shopping. But I have been less successful in applying it.

What I like best about the 7-Day Menu Planner is that the themed weeks and recipes don't just relate to the family. These recipes ranging from Meatless to Easy Entertaining also help in adding variety and a sense of order to my week. This book also got my kitchen and utensils in order. I now have a list of everything in my freezer thanks to Susan! The weeks are easy to follow and the recipes delicious. I'm glad to say I've made them my own!

This book is great and really easy to use. I bought Robin Miller's cookbook that makes planning weekly meals easy but it was anyything but! This book gives you a few new recipes per week and a full meal for everyday of the year. It was so easy. Half the recipes are simple and require minimum or no planning. Some of the more difficult recipes are simple with a small list of ingredients which is different than Miller's book that has a page full of ingredients for one dish! The weeks are also split into themes and times of t he year. Best $12 i have spent on a cookbook in a long time. Has great ideas and really does save time for working parents of busy teenagers like myself!!!
