Editorial Reviews

2013 release from the modern Funk outfit featuring Dam-Funk and Snoopzilla AKA the legendary Snoop Dogg. The King of Modern Funk meets the smoked-out scion of G-Funk on the 7 Days of Funk album, where Snoop performs under the name Snoopzilla, the homage to the legendary funk master, Bootsy Collins, who often went by the moniker Bootzilla. After an initial chance meeting two years ago, Dam and Snoop began to collaborate when Snoop invited Dam to perform with him at a 2011 SXSW show - the musical connection was inherent. ''We're the babies of the Mothership,'' says Snoop. ''I've had Funk influences in my music my whole career. Dam-Funk is cold. He's keeping the Funk alive and I knew I had to get down with him.''

Ever since Snoop Doggy Dogg (as he was known at the time) emerged in the mid 1990's,he was musically on the forefront of a group of hip-hoppers who were intent on basing their music and thematic concepts on the slicker end of George Clinton's P-Funk sound, which was referred to as G-Funk. This end of the "gangsta" rap spectrum tended to provide an interesting contrast to some of the more controversially violent lyrical content, which is a staple of maintain hip-hop (still hard for me to use those two adjectives together) even today. Apparently during his 2011 concert Snoop was joined onstage by Dam Funk,a West Coast artist who is continuing to expand the 80's boogie funk style that wasn't wholly represented in the early/mid 80's and which had an enormous influence on the G-Funk sound Snoop and his contemporaries originally pioneered. Since his early days Snoop has of course grown as both an artist and a human being. And considering his collaborations with P-Funk's iconic bassist Bootsy Collins in different settings, his collaboration here with Dam Funk is an important arc of Snoop Dogg's (presented himself here as Snoopzilla in tribute to Bootsy) long and interesting career.

All of the eight pieces on this album, which include a bonus track in "Systematic" are all proudly fashioned by Dam Funk without any samples and all with the use of analog based electronic/synthesized instrumentation. "Hit Da Pavement" features Bootsy, ever being himself on a thick and grinding groove that also blends in some of Dam Funk's moodily melodic synthesizer atmospherics-which of course permeates this entire album. As always Snoop himself alternates between rapping and singing in his funky and slurred vocal style song the chanted choruses on songs such as "Faded Away","Let It Go" and "Do My Thang".

I was so upset that I almost cried because of this album. Not because it isn't good, because it's great. The reason is this: this album should be selling by the boatload and being played everywhere on West Coast radio and nightclubs all over. Newsflash, it isn't. Every record on this album bangs, as Dam-Funk brings his own twist on the funk we grew up on. Snoop sounds in prime form on this album, as funk has always been his strong suit. Knowing that, I have no idea why he does that other junk and doesn't stick to the G-Funk flavor that made him a superstar 20 years ago.

My favorite songs off this album would be "Hit Da Pavement", "Faden Away", and "Do Your Thang". They are especially funky. This is what music in this era should be, not that techno junk that plagues mainstream radio. Support great music and buy this album!

The Big Homie Snoop Dogg aka Snoop Lion aka Snoopzilla returns with another album. This time it's a collaborative effort between he and funk artist Dam-Funk. If you've ever heard Dam-Funk's album Toeachizown, you'd understand that this is a match made in heaven. It's just natural. It's been a long time coming as well for fans of both artists. Snoop Dogg sounds right at home over this production much in the same "comfort" zone that he shares with Dr. Dre, Warren G and Daz Dillinger.

I generally like all of Snoop's material but amongst Tha Eastsidaz, Doggy's Angelz, Snoop Lion, Tha Broaddus Boyz, Tha Dogg Pound and the like, this album stands out in Snoop's enormous catalog. It's funky, it's groovy. It's like they went in the studio and had a jam session and the work is outstanding. My favorites are Do My Thang (straight jammin!), Let It Go, Faden Away and High With Me.

Seven Days of Funk is one of Snoop's best projects in years and to me as far as feel good music, it's better than the Snoop Lion personality as well. Fans of Snoop, Dam-Funk, or funk music should definitely give this one a few spins as it's one of the best albums of the year as well.

Dope! I already knew what time it was with Dam-Funk, I got his Toeachizown album which is real funky, so I was looking forward to this. Snoop hasn't been messing with that funk sound for a while now other than a few tracks here and there so It was good to hear him over Dam's production; Snoop is at his best over funk-type production, he was made for that s***. It's an EP so it's short, left me wanting more. Good to hear the Dogg Pound get down on it. I hope they got a full length LP in the works, maybe they can get some other modern day funketeers on there too like Kokane, Butch Cassidy and LaToya Williams (Snoop's coo, but they sing way better LOL!). Good job with them beats Dam, good to see you do something big like this with Snoop. Snoop, this is back in the right direction homie, ya'll need to make a full length classic, why u bulls***tin (oh yeah, and a feature from Suga Free would fit like a glove too if you do another one). Keep it funky!

This is one of those purchases where you do it for the artist because you like the past work of the artist. But I was pleasantly surprised. This is a CD you have to listen to on a good sound system to experience the quality of the analog sound. This is a classic, and the lyrics are on point, and the production is amazing. I like this better than major labels CD's. I hope Snoop and Damn release more music like this in the future. Give it a shot you won't be disappointed.
