4.0 out of 5 stars Great fire starter with free knife attached.
Let me make a few assumptions if you are considering buying this knife. 1) You are not planning on buying a $200 Gerber. 2) You do not consider yourself a survivalist but you do DVR Man Vs Wild. 3) You're buying as a gift for someone who DVRs Man Vs Wild. 4) In all honesty the biggest thing you have ever needed a "survival" knife for while camping is to Rambo open a...

3.0 out of 5 stars Midget Survival Knife
First of all this knife is China stainless. The pseudo-paracord might as well be the yarn your grandmother knits with. You'll have to do a handle re-wrap. The blade comes dull and the sheath is cheap crap. It's a solid tang knife with a good feel once re-wrapped. The fire starter is really cool and works well. However, the blade scuffs easily. You can't complain too...

4) In all honesty the biggest thing you have ever needed a "survival" knife for while camping is to Rambo open a bag of chips.

This was my first full tang knife and I honestly bought it thinking I could do more with it than I really can. Once I stopped trying to baton trees down with it and used it for what it really is, its a good knife. It easily beats any similarly priced folder or multi-tool (and hollow handle piece of junk) for back woods functionality, and its a very educational knife. Its pretty much just a chunk of stainless steel, so as long as you dont beat it to death, nothing can go wrong with it.
You must sharpen it. You must do something with the handle. (I went on youtube and learned how to para-cord a handle.) Ive used it as a spearhead, for making tent pegs and splitting kindling. All in all its a good tool that you can keep on you without ever knowing its there until you need it, and its great for opening bags of chips.
The firesteel on the other hand is incredible! If you have never used one before you will love starting fires with it. Knowing you can make fire without matches or lighters gives you a warm fuzzy feeling.

So I recommend owning this knife for the experience of of owning this knife. Also, consider a Mora, or Cold Steel Bushman.

ok a few things, first this is a full tang knife, and it comes with a fire starter. yes it comes blunter than a butter knife, and yes the rope grip is incredibly uncomfortable. BUT, the hilt has holes with makes re-wrapping the handle with some rope or para-cord very easy, once re-wrapped the handle is comfortable, also the steel is decent quality, so with a little sharpening the knife becomes very usable. bottom line 7$ and 10 minuets of your time and you have yourself a decent knife.

You can't complain too much given the price, But if you buy a knife of this type stick to the silver/raw/unpainted blade.

This knife is dull as can be and small as the palm of my hand about 6 in. total.
Other than the size its a good lil tool. The fire starter is worth the price of this knife. I liked it but don't buy thinking your going to get a belt knife this is definetly a boot knife.

I only really bought this survival knife for the firesteel. I just thought of the knife being a nice bonus, but it turned out to be a nice surprise. Larger than I thought, more comfortable than I thought (reviews here don't like the corded grip, however, I found it comfortable enough), and significantly better steel than I thought. Sharpens very well, seems to hold and edge, and because it's so cheap I "tested" it by cutting up several large cardboard boxes thoroughly and completely through a mop handle. Nice.

Firesteel is fantastic too. I'm going to re-sharpen it up a bit more and throw it in the glovebox or take it with me camping. It's the perfect thing to toss and forget about, until a day comes around where you might need it, or maybe REALLY need it, and it would become invaluable.

When I got it from Amazon it was in a plain white box with large letters, "HUNTING KNIFE", all over it which I thought was funny. An unrelated side note, for some reason the box it came in was completely unsealed, and worse it was a strange simple box that kind of just folded in on itself that could be opened very easily.

This is an amazing set. The magnesium match is, by far, the best tool to have in your survival arsenal. The knifes full tang design with the inter-woven paracord makes this the utmost, supreme buy for your value.

4.0 out of 5 stars suprised, May 2, 2010

when i got the knife and saw the typical cheap china man box it was in i thought oh great you should know better you cant get something for nothing. Then as i opened the cheap looking cardboard china box , the look and feel of the knife wernt bad. So i tried to cut paper , nope. Then spent about 4 minutes sharpening it and it is sharp as a razor.
The only thing i cant rate on this knife yet is its durablity and ability to keep an edge under use. SO far i am really pleased based on my investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little knife, February 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 7" Hunting Knife with Fire Starter (Misc.)
I was not expecting much when I ordered this knife. I was very surprised. It is a great full tang knife. fits well in a survival, or hunting pack. It does need a little sharpening, and maybe a re wrapping on the handle, but most of us would sharpen, and work the handle for our selves any way. At this price you can have one for in the glove box, your hunting pack, where ever. Throw it in and forget it, will be there when you kneed it. The fire steel is of good quality, and the thumb grooves on the back work well as a striker. The sheath is just sewn canvas, and there is no retainer for the striker, but don't let that keep you away from this knife. For $10 this is a way better knife than you will get from any flea market, and being really just on piece of steel will be very durable.

This knife is garbage, the sheath is decent, and the fire starter is awesome. At least I got a nice fire starter. Hey, silver lining and that itching question i had was answered. You win some, you lose some. If you care at all about getting a knife you can sharpen, don't buy this one. The metal is too soft. I really think they made it out of beer cans. Seriously.
