Helloween - Are You Metal?

Biography

HELLOWEEN are known as the inventors of 'German Melodic-Speed-Metal’ and are creative
pioneers and one of the most successful Metal bands in personal union since their
beginnings in 1984. If there is a golden thread throughout more than 25 years of band
history, 13 studio albums, countless headliner tours around the globe and far more than 5
million sold records, then ... Read more in Amazon's Helloween Store

Editorial Reviews

If there is a golden thread throughout the more than 25 years of Helloween's history, 13 studio albums, countless headliner tours around the globe and more than 5 million records sold, then it is their special kind of attitude: don't take yourself too seriously and simply live statements like: 'just have fun with the stuff you're doing.' Maybe it is exactly this easiness that allows HELLOWEEN to be one of the most constant bands of the genre while simultaneously being the one band who dares to experiment more than their musical peers. While some copycats would rather stick with the same old patterns, Andi Deris, Michael Weikath, Sascha Gerstner, Markus Großkopf and Dani Löble aren't afraid of taking risks - and are rightfully rewarded with success.

7 Sinners is definitively one of the fastest and hardest albums in the Helloween's history and it bursts with vitality. That might partly be due to the versatility of the various songwriters within the band, who over time have become so homogenous, that the13 songs formed a unity on their own in the studio, but it may also be due to the fact that the album was recorded completely without a click track, which, considering the extreme speed of the songs is an impressive feat. Especially drummer Löble, who proves that his technique is at a world-class-level. Following his excellent inner clock, bass and drums drive tracks like 'Are You Metal?', 'Long Live The King' and 'Who Is Mr. Madman?' to dizzying tempos. 7 Sinners with its typically strong melodies and the tangible joy of playing, is a true metal album whose range reaches astonishing dimensions.

It has become a cliche for metal band's to tout their newest opus as their 'fastest' or 'heaviest' album ever made, but in Helloween's case, 7 Sinners is truly a return to form and is indeed their fastest and heaviest release in years. Helloween bass player Markus Grosskopf stated about the band's new material: 'For all those out there who found our special best-of [CD] 'Unarmed' to be too smooth and calm, I have great news: The new album will hit you right in the face! It's gonna be very heavy and contain all [the classic] HELLOWEEN trademarks! Some songs are very powerful and hymnic, others contain the fastest bass-drum patterns our drummer Dani [Löble] ever played, and this means a lot!'

Customer Reviews

This album is easily their fastest and heaviest as well.
Khalid Stetkevych
There are memorable choruses in spades, great guitar solos, fun drum fills and a very smart balance of consistency with variety.
Gentlegiantprog
The band shares in the writing so it appears they all have great creativity.

I was looking on Amazon for new bands to listen to when I came across Helloween's new album "7 Sinners." Being that I have heard of Helloween vaguely I took a listen. Once I did I was flabbergasted. It seems I was severely missing out on a truly great band. This band has a history almost as long as my life span. Now with old bands they have a habit of getting stuck in their era. This is the main reason why I stayed away so long. NOT Helloween though. They adapt with every changing time and produced fantastic albums. I had to go back 20+ years worth of music to catch up. That's a lot of listening and money spent. Worth it by far. So what about this album? Complete and incredible music. Contemporary to the last drop. Taste the sweet melodies, screeching screams, wild drumming with crushing sounds that will rock your brain inside and out. They have a song called "Are You Metal." Well...you better be because this album is pure metal. No hard rock here at all. Metal for the metal heads out there. Andi Deris is an amazing and creative singer. This guy has about 5 different voices. He is definitely a complete singer. There aren't many people out there like him. I like him better than Michael Kiske. The band shares in the writing so it appears they all have great creativity. This album is better than all of their previous works in my opinion. Don't get me wrong they have some gems in their catalog but this album moves them from just being a Power Metal/Rock band to being a Progressive Power Metal band. The riffs and tempo changes and fast and flawless. Solid performance. A must have for metal heads. Best tracks: "Are You Metal", "Who is Mr. Madman?", "You Stupid Mankind", and "Far In the Future" which is an amazing closer song. I am now a devoted fan. If you like Helloween do not pass on this album.

"7 Sinners" is the 13th studio album by power metal innovators "Helloween", a follow up to "Gambling with the devil"(2007). Conceptually "7 Sinners" is probably one of the darkest albums "Helloween" has recorded, and a highly acclaimed release already by the press.

The darker approach is mainly traceable on the lyrics and the particularly heavy riffing throughout the album, yet "7 Sinners" is so much more: To begin with, the album demonstrates perfect balance between riffs and melodies, fast and slow tempos, aggressive and catchy vocals. The line up features founders "Michael Weikath (g) Markus Grosskpof (b) established lead singer Andi Deris and the newer members Sascha Gerstner (g) and Dani Loble (d). "7 Sinners" is the third album recorded by the particular line up, and it very much seems that every fell into place with this album.

Yes, you could attribute the freshness of the new album to the darker concept that surrounds it, yet its artistic success probably comes down to the bonding and accumulated experience of this line up: First and foremost Dani's drum performance is totally superior to the previous two albums-the guy plays faster with more aggressive and passion that almost establishes his personal style. For that matter the drumming on this album is totally devastating and as a result fuels the overall performance with adrenaline. Sasha on the other hand has managed to collaborate perfectly with Weikath resulting in twin guitar melodies coming out in loads (in fact the album has probably more twin guitar melodies and lengthier solos than any of the previous two albums). Favorite tracks include:"Who is mr. madman", "World of fantasy", "Long live the king", "You stupid mankind" and "My sacrifice".

I'll keep it short:

Pros: This is easily their best sounding album. Tone for days. Like Megadeth's Endgame and Overkill's Ironbound, this album is the defining cutting edge of modern metal production. This album is easily their fastest and heaviest as well. All but two tracks are sonic thrashers.

Cons: A bit predictable. Not quite as progy as their last two, but hey, I think I'll survive. There is definitely some moments of super cheese. The next cons will only be applicable to avid helloween fans: There are a few riffs and lead licks that they have definitely used before, but for their umpteenth album, its to be expected. Andy's range is slowly but surely diminishing; still sounds great, but not quite as flashy as Keeper: Legacy.

P.S. There was a sticker on the cover of my copy that said this album was a "return to form". Obviously whoever wrote that is not a Helloween fan, because anyone who really knows Helloween knows that no two of their albums sound alike, and that their last two releases have been ridiculously good. If anything, this is a return to unrelenting speed. They "returned to form" when Deris came into the circle and they released Master of the Rings.

I listened this CD at first when it came out last October 28 in Japan, as usual for this type of bands, release dates come early than America, and even better, includes a bonus track that in this case is AWESOME, especially for the bass work, song name is "Faster we fall" and as I said is just an excellent track as are all the other ones.
I have been a helloween fan for many years and I can tell you for sure ... this CD is unique, sound is fresh, heavier and faster than "gambling with the devil".
Helloween has become a band that keeps evolving in a way that keeps old-fans happy and also delivering excellent material for people new to the band or to the gender itself.
If you listen from start to finish this CD you will enjoy power metal at its finest.
The highlights of the CD could perfectly be the bass and drums work, these sound fresh with full inspiration, second, production and guitar work, a guitar work that can be only expected from these masters.
I am glad that helloween keeps delivering high-quality and high-creativity music, that in fact , themselves represents the highest bar for many other bands.
Go for it, I am sure YOU WILL NOT BE disappointed and most probably, if you are not yet a Helloween listener, you'll be ...
