2.0 out of 5 stars not good enough
positive: the operating system is wonderful, and I never had Linux-based computer before. The size is what I wanted: portable, small. However I returned the computer to the store 1 day after I got it. The reason was: 1) the battery drained almost immediately despite charging 2) the screen is so small ( 7") that no web page could fully displayed. I could deal with small...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Computing on the Go!, December 19, 2007
This review is from: ASUS Eee PC 8G (7-inch Screen, 800 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB Solid-State Disk, Linux Preloaded) Pearl White (Personal Computers)
As a blogger, it's not practical for me to drag my full sized desktop replacement laptop computer with me everywhere I go. My husband purchased this for me as an alternative, and I love it! It boots quickly, it has a long battery life, and fits into my purse so I can just keep it in there and blog on the go!

The included software is just fine for everyday tasks like web surfing, email, uploading pics, etc. I haven't found a single thing that I can't do on my Asus Eee, but then again, I'm not a gamer or power user either.

The only thing that takes some getting used to is the small keyboard - it'll be hunt and peck at first, but you adapt after a couple of hours of using it. I'd definitely recommend this to any blogger - with its wireless internet capability, built in webcam, slots for SDHC cards, and small size, it's a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Computer!, April 10, 2008

I have the 8GB Pearl White Eee and I absolutely love it! Weighing less than 2 lbs., this is so much easier to lug around that my 7 lb. laptop was. But that is only one of the advantages of the Eee.

If you need more hard drive space, you can connect a USB external hard drive. When using this computer at home, if the keyboard is too small for you, connect a full size USB keyboard. Want a larger monitor? Connect a USB monitor. Need more USB ports? They have some cute little USB Hubs available for that purpose.

Mine came with Linux. I had planned to get rid of Linux and install Windows XP instead, but I ended up liking Linux so much that I have kept it and am planning to set up XP as a secondary operating system and dual boot. Linux is just so quick and easy to use, and the system boots up so much more quickly than a Windows system does.

In short, not only is this a great little lightweight computer to take on the road with you, it can also become your full size "desktop." It is becoming very popular on college campuses because it can be hooked up to monitors, hard drives and keyboards in the dorm rooms, then disconnected and taken to class for notes, homework, etc.

A great place to go for information on the Asus Eee is eeeuser.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Toy, April 12, 2008

This review is from: ASUS Eee PC 8G (7-inch Screen, 800 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB Solid-State Disk, Linux Preloaded) Pearl White (Personal Computers)
I have had this for 2 days, which is not technically long enough to know if I love this or not. So far, I think this is great (I'm typing on it right now), though it certainly won't replace my regular laptop because I'm a writer, and the keyboard is just a little too small to use for hours on end. But this is great for taking to work to use on break, or taking on a plane. I can live with the tiny keyboard for a couple vacation days.

The reason I'm writing this so early in my ownership is to offer some advice to people who have no intuition when it comes to computers. I fall into that category, and I wish I had known some of this first.

There is an e-reader that has a eee pc manual already installed. I'm sure there's an easier way to get to it, but I found it under the Work tab - File Manager - My Documents - My Ebooks - manual.chm.

This comes with all sorts of pre-installed software, which means some of it is already out of date. If you want to update your software, anti-virus, etc, go to the Settings tab and click on the Add/Remove Software icon. It will check for updates and let you know what needs to be updated. SET UP YOUR INTERNET FIRST! It looks online for the updates.

So far, Xandros Linux seems to be easy-ish. As I said, this stuff isn't intuitive for me, but this isn't too difficult to navigate. I had been told that the eee pc uses Ubuntu, so I bought a book on Ubuntu. It didn't help. :) Thankfully Xandros isn't hard.

I can't help out much on setting up your internet because my professional geek husband (everyone needs their own personal help desk!!) made that work. If you're searching for a command prompt line so you can find something to set up your internet, the manual says to hit ctrl-alt-t. You can also go into the settings tab & go into Diagnostic Tools-Details-Ethernet. There's some number under there that we needed to get our router to let my eee pc use the internet.

The processor is a little slow, but then you're buying cheap. This laptop won't let you play Diablo. But if you want something light to drag around, it's a great thing.

I love this little laptop. Got it two days ago and it does everything it advertises. I have the 8g Asus. The keyboard and touchpad took some getting used to but all in all, I can surf the net, listen to internet radio and type a document all at the same time.

One thing: after my 11 yr old daughter got to witness it in all its glory and since I'm no techno-geek, she showed me features that I might've figured out on my own-just a little longer, but like the product says it's "easy to learn, easy to work, easy to play".

Now if I can just wrestle it away from her...

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and it has Linux!, April 1, 2008

A nice, awesome portable pc. Some call it a laptop, but I would call it a palmtop. lol

It comes with Xandros Linus. For the ignorant, this is a very Windows similar and compatible distro of Linux that allows instant familiarity and setup. If you know Windows XP, you will be comfortable and happy with Xandros.

Personally, I ditched Xandros and put another Linux on mine. I use mine for security audits, war driving and site surveillance.

There are some completely ignorant reviews on here made by fools that are still trying to figure out how to double click properly. They complain about a lack of power, they complain about Linux, they complain that the screen is only 7 inches, and it goes on and on. Obviously, these people are the people that would have been eaten by dinosaurs. The specs and details are available. So I guess these morons just bought it because it was cute? How dare they complain.

It is small, quiet and the battery lasts a long time. It is a pleasure to use. Of course, this is not for everyone. For those of you who can use or do need this, it is well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great little machine, May 13, 2008

This review is from: ASUS Eee PC 8G (7-inch Screen, 800 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB Solid-State Disk, Linux Preloaded) Pearl White (Personal Computers)
Having a ball with this little machine. Took it on my first business trip to another island in Hawaii, just right out of the box. Picked up on a neighbor's wifi instantly and was just cruising the rest of my trip. Really like the included Linux system but converted to Windows XP because wanted to run some Windows software. Loaded OK as long as you follow the included directions exactly. Even though the hard drive is only 8 gigs I seem to keep loading more software without running out of space. Load movies and music on jump drives and SD cards. I run Quicken, a wireless printer/scanner, some older games and a Sprint wireless card which plugs into one of the USB slots. Great for out in the field computing and love the virtually instant on and off feature of having a solid state hard drive. 2 hour+ battery life is fine. When I have to do large computing I have a monitor and keyboard in the office to plug into. Pretty much replaced my other notebooks. Run Acronis backup software just to make sure. Cannot beat the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great road computer, May 20, 2008

This review is from: ASUS Eee PC 8G (7-inch Screen, 800 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB Solid-State Disk, Linux Preloaded) Pearl White (Personal Computers)
This computer makes travel easy. It is very light and can do just about anything you want it to do, albeit a bit slowly, all on the fold down tray in the seat in front of you. Add a 16 gig SD card to put all of your programming on with USB storage for your files and you are up and running. I added XP and now take it everywhere with me. My downsides are (1) the heighth of the screen because with some programs you can lose the bottom of the display, and (2) the small right shift key which causes me to hit the up arrow sometimes. With time and practice, I got used to it. If you've got big hands and fingers you probably won't like this sub-notebook, but if not, it's a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, May 14, 2008
By
Nerdy Neal (Sao Paulo, Brazil) - See all my reviews
I've had a model 8G for about a month and am very pleased with the machine.

My one gripe is a problem regarding the cooling fan, which sometimes inexplicably comes on at full speed and stays on. The only fix, per the blogs, is to turn-off the computer and remove the battery for a minute or so. Generally, the fan then functions normally for a few days. Its an easy workaround for an admittedly small problem, but I am hoping Asus will provide a permanent solution. I e-mailed them, but received no response.

Otherwise, the computer is excellent. Although Xandros Linux worked perfectly, my personal preference was for Windows so I installed XP Professional, using an external USB CD drive. I also downloaded and installed Open Office.

For nerdy fun, I installed the latest Java System Development Kit, Net Beans (a heavy-duty programming tool), and Java DB, which still left me with around 3 gig of unused hard drive. The computer fit nicely on an airplane dinner tray and ran for about two hours of heavy usage. On one flight, the stewardess insisted on taking the computer up front, so the pilot could have a look.

The keyboard is small, but I was able to adapt quickly and can now touch-type without significant problems. The video display is bright and crisp.

On vacation, the computer immediately connected to wireless internet at various motels and coffee shops.

This is an inexpensive purchase and well worth the money.

This review is from: ASUS Eee PC 8G (7-inch Screen, 800 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB Solid-State Disk, Linux Preloaded) Pearl White (Personal Computers)
First purchased a 4gb eee pc for my mother (94 yrs old). I was impressed that she could pick it up and resume doing e-mail immediately, even though she had always had a Windows based machine before. Then, I saw the advantage of a small machine like this for travel and bought a 8gb model for myself. Of course, I knew it's limits due to size, but the size and weight were advantageous for travel, overseas especially. I loaded it with Windows XP Pro for compatability with my office & home computers and software, but if I was beginning without being tied to Windows software I would have left the original operating system on the eee as I did for my mother. I will probably replace my hand-held PDA (Mobile Windows based)with this eee pc because it has so much more. The wireless works flawlessly with both OS platforms. For more extended use I did pick up a folding (tabletkiosk) keyboard, but I can accept the size of the on-board keypad for short usage. It is so expandable for storage... 4 gb secure digital card, 8gb thumbdrive. If putting on lots of software I would recommend the 8gb design with documents and books stored on removable drives. Sure, it is not the same as my $2K work laptop, but for travel it fits the bill perfectly, and for elderly parents is much easier to pick up and use than a regular PC. No complaints on our part.
