Expensive, but it works well,
This review is from: JET 708020 GJ-1 Gouge Jig for JSSG-10 Wet Sharpener (Tools & Home Improvement)
It seems like a lot of money for a little jig, but I can tell you that my fingernail grind on my bowl gouge now looks better and feels sharper than the edge that came from the factory. I made a stop block with the exact dimension of the bar set and protrusion so I can just use my stop block to set my jig up exactly the same way every time. One drawback is that there is no keyway on the jig rest, so it is never exactly the same, but it is very easy to examine and adjust until it is. This tool takes a little time to learn to use correctly, but it will give you a razor sharp edge on some unique gouges. I would not have bought the grinder if I could not get this jig with it.

Once setup the jig does what it is suppose to do. The only problem is that when grinding it wants to constantly creep forward. You have to always exert a constant pressure to the rear to compensate for this. Jet needs to do something to prevent it from going forward.

Gouge Jig,
This review is from: JET 708020 GJ-1 Gouge Jig for JSSG-10 Wet Sharpener (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have tried to use this jig. I have watched the video 3 times and haven't got it right yet. I need the jig so I will keep trying. Part of the difficulty is the original cut on the gouge is obviously wrong.

Works fine, but for me, it's not the best tool for the job.,

I bought this to use with my Grizzly wet grinder, and it's utterly compatible. I bought it because I thought I'd be using the wet grinder to sharpen my lathe gouges. As it turns out, I generally sharpen them on my other grinder using the Wolverine jig. The bench grinder does a fine job with less hassle.
This jig would, I believe, do the trick for larger carving gouges, which need the razor edge that the wet grinder produces. For my lathe gouge needs, though, I find this jig and the wet grinder to be overkill.

I use this on my Triton wet sharpener (compatible with all the various jigs). This Jet gouge jig works well and I have successfully sharpened numerous jigs. The only issue I have is that the indent the post sits and rocks in is a little shallow, and when making wide, sweeping turns of the gouge over the stone, sometimes the post just slips out of the guide holder.

This is easy to use with the Jet Sharpener but you need to watch the video that comes with the sharpener for easy to understand explanation of its use with the machine. You can try U-tube also they have a deom on there if you dont have the video that Jet puts out.....

not perfect, but gives good results,
This review is from: JET 708020 GJ-1 Gouge Jig for JSSG-10 Wet Sharpener (Tools & Home Improvement)
First the good news, which is that it's possible to get a very nice fingernail grind on your gouges using this jig. I'm not yet skilled at grinding free hand (without a jig) and this jig allows me to get great results that I couldn't get otherwise.
Now for the annoying part, which other reviewers have already mentioned, is that you need to pay close attention to make sure that the piece of the jig which holds your gouge doesn't fall out of the base piece while you're grinding. It's not a disaster if it does, it's just annoying. There's a nice video on using this jig at [...]. I found it very helpful. Before buying, I would compare the price of this jig with the comparable jig for the Tormek. If the prices aren't radically different, I'd probably go with the Tormek. |
