5.0 out of 5 stars Well designed sander
This belt sander fully meets my needs. I'm into making segmented bowls, and use this machine to flatten the segments for final glueing. Assembly of the machine was easy, and the belt adjusts accurately. Using the belt in either horizonal or vertical position is a convenient feature. The sander comes with a sturdy steel open base, which wasn't mentioned in the Amazon...

2.0 out of 5 stars Sander looks better than it performs
I bought this sander about a year ago. I have been disapointed with it's performance. The housing is plastic and the cast iron table mount into the plastic base lacks rigidity. this makes it hard to sand anything square considering the attractive looking table with it's 90 degree slots. The attachment bolts for the belt table are difficult to work because of he lack of...

This review is from: JET 708595 JSG-96 6-Inch/9-Inch 3/4-Horsepower Benchtop Belt/Disc Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
This belt sander fully meets my needs. I'm into making segmented bowls, and use this machine to flatten the segments for final glueing. Assembly of the machine was easy, and the belt adjusts accurately. Using the belt in either horizonal or vertical position is a convenient feature. The sander comes with a sturdy steel open base, which wasn't mentioned in the Amazon write-up. I replaced the casters with with lockable wheels to make the sander mobile in my small shop.

I'm a hobbyist who has done a few commercial projects and am quite happy with this sander. Its very heavy-duty not only in its power but also the construction of its base. The machine has more than enough power and with the 80-grit belt it came with, I was asking myself why I hadn't purchased it before this time. I zipped through some corner and end pieces with very little elbow grease needed. (I decided to spend more money for the Jet as opposed to saving money on a Delta based on reviews I've read and again am quite happy with my decision.)
My only slight knock against the machine is that the on/off power button is located on the opposite side of the machine from the belt sander in its horizontal position which makes it cumbersome to turn off.

I bought this sander about a year ago. I have been disapointed with it's performance. The housing is plastic and the cast iron table mount into the plastic base lacks rigidity. this makes it hard to sand anything square considering the attractive looking table with it's 90 degree slots. The attachment bolts for the belt table are difficult to work because of he lack of clearance. You also have to remove the belt table in order to change the belt. In hind sight I would have bought a more exspensive sander with a cast iron base. Consider what plastic does if you were to sand metal. The graphite on the belt platten wore off right away. It seems a wasted addition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a nice machine, room for improvment, February 22, 2007
This review is from: JET 708595 JSG-96 6-Inch/9-Inch 3/4-Horsepower Benchtop Belt/Disc Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
Overall, this is a nice machine. This sander has a nice steel guard that covers the forward edge of the belt, it is attached by four screws, and is easy to remove for radius sanding. The packaging of this sander is mediocre, the first sander I receive had a hole ion the box and the disc was severely bent. Amazon issued a pick up to ups and sent me another entire unit. The second unit's box looked okay, but again the sanding disc was warped, and easy 3/16 inch in places, less than the first bent disc, but still not usable. Rather than deal with Amazon, I called Jet, and they promptly sent me a replacement disc. If you can find a local supplier, you would be better off avoiding the shipping.

This sander is a good improvement over the Delta 6x48 sander I had that burned out. It comes with a heavy iron table for the disc sander, this table is mounted using a post. Although it is nice to have an iron table, it is a bit heavy for the post mounting, and is not difficult to see it deflect downward when additional weight is applied. Jet might do better to go to an aluminum table, or redesign the post mounting so it is more rigid. The rest of the machine seems really solid, and has no lack of power. The belts track well, and the machine runs smoothly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jet Disc Belt Sander, April 7, 2007
This review is from: JET 708595 JSG-96 6-Inch/9-Inch 3/4-Horsepower Benchtop Belt/Disc Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
I thought this would be A heavy duty sander. When it showed up I was disappointed. All guards were Plastic. The disc sander table was not as sturdy as I thought it would or should be.It works ok but for the money it is pretty disappointing. This is not much better than the small portable bench top model I got rid of . I would think twice before I replaced this with the same.

2.0 out of 5 stars Small Jet...., December 18, 2008
This review is from: JET 708595 JSG-96 6-Inch/9-Inch 3/4-Horsepower Benchtop Belt/Disc Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
After looking the Jet belt sanders over for a bit I decided on this model mainly due to price. Well, you know what they say... I sent this one back, ordered the big Jet belt sander and haven't looked back. This unit would be good for small woodworking or trimming your finger nails. If you want to get serious look at the 1 1/2 hp model and spend the extra coin, you won't be disappointed....

This review is from: JET 708595 JSG-96 6-Inch/9-Inch 3/4-Horsepower Benchtop Belt/Disc Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
This product actually exceeds my expectations! Delivery was fast too--only 3 days. Just yesterday I used it to shape the edges and smooth the flat spaces of a 30 pound irregular block of cedar. I am very pleased with the performance of this sander. Finally a benchtop sander that does not fall apart under a little pressure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jet Benchtop Dis and Belt Sander, April 3, 2011
This review is from: JET 708595 JSG-96 6-Inch/9-Inch 3/4-Horsepower Benchtop Belt/Disc Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
Several years ago I purchased a Ryobi BD4600 Disc/Belt Sander using it for small hobby and art projects without any problems but as time went on people started seeing my work which turned into a customer base and requests grew to bigger projects. The Ryobi is a fine sander and like one of the reviews I read "it's about time, I stopped buying cheaper sanders every time, spent some money and bought a great sander" The Ryobi just didn't have the horse power to do some of the projects I was building. For several weeks I read, interviewed other artist and watched demo's on various sanders and I came to the conclusion the Jet 708595 would do the job.
Now since I have used and put the sander through several tasks, I'm very pleased in the say it performs, and sands. The sander is heavy duty which I like and balanced and easy to use.
I would recommend this sander to any one whether your doing around the house or professional jobs.
