3.0 out of 5 stars Great Unit, HORRIBLE wheels
I have NO problem with the unit itself, the hose is ungainly and a pain to deal with because I move my unit around in a small shop.. but not really anything you can do about that other than maybe put something on top of the unit that would hold the hose up out of the way... but the real problem and something you should consider before buying is the mobility. 5.0 out of 5 stars I love the Jet, and I love the JDS Dust Force Also, March 2, 2004
This review is from: JET 708626CK DC-1100CK 1-1/2-Horsepower 1,100 CFM Canister Dust Collector, 115/230-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
Looks like Jet took dust collection to the next level, but I would like to clear a couple of things up. I have the JDS Dust Force, which moves 1250 CFM of air. It is built like a tank and is less expensive. Even with the optional 1 micron bag, in addition to the 5 micron bag that comes with it, is less money than the Jet unit. The JDS is built so well, I wonder how they can produce a unit that is so well built, for such a reasonable amount of money.
The confusion arises around the bag change when cleaning the unit. The review mentions not having to take the top bag out and beat on it. Not so: All you simply have to do is pat it down, while it is still mounted, and all of the fine stuff that is stuck to it, drops directly down into the lower clear plastic bag. After that settles, you remove the bag, and dump it into a trash can with a 32 gallon trash bag liner. Yes it does create some dust going in, but I don't mind that because my Dust collector is located directly underneath a JDS ceiling mounted Air Filtration system. That also moves 750 CFM so any dust immediately is sucked up into the air filter. I also have a 3M charcoal and chemical cartridge mask hanging in front of me, so at times like this when dust is running amuck, I simply pull the top strap over my head for complete dust protection. Which brings me to the next subject.
In the book, "Controlling Dust in the Shop" (highly recommended) the author states that the small particles of one micron or less are what you need to be concerned about. They are the ones that get lodged into your lungs. He mentions that even air filtration systems are a source of large amounts of small particles getting blown into the shop air.
The ultimate is a cyclone air filtration system, with an exhaust to the outside, but who can afford three to ten times the price of this Jet unit. So the next best thing is to get a unit like this Jet, or the JDS, , the super inexpensive Woodstock collection separator, available here at Amazon, that sits on top of a 32 gallon trash can. That picks up all of the big stuff, leaving only the fine powder to go onto the Jet collector. That has an added advantage in preventing chunks of wood, or even worse yet, a screw-piece of metal from dancing off of the internal fan blade. Sparks in dust are not an ideal situation. Additionally it makes the whole clean out problem almost non existent. The big chunks are easy to slide out of the metal 32 gallon trash can, and that is not the material that has the fine dust in it.
Another point is that the large amount of surface area that these large dust collectors have, saves you a lot of aggravation when planing wood. I used to use a Sears 6HP shop vac in combination with the Woodstock unit. The problem is that the fine powder that was making its way into the sears shop vac, would quickly bury the small filter in powder. (Even though it was Sears largest 6HP unit.) That would stop a sufficient amount of air flow which would jam up my planer. A major problem until I got the dust collector. The Jet and JDS dust collectors have some 40 plus square feet of surface area to absorb fine powder, instead of inches like the shop vac. So these systems are highly recommended.
The one thing that I found, was that these portable systems are not designed to give you the same amount of pressure you would need for a whole shop system. You know the kind of results you would need to have a complete metal piped ductwork system, with each tool hooked up to a station. These units are portable, and designed to be used on one or two machines.
In addition to the JDS Dust Collector, which is ideal for planing and other heavy dust creating procedures, I recently acquired a 5HP shop vac that draws a powerful amount of air, and has an optional HEPA filter which traps 99.97% of particles down to .3 microns, (yes point three, instead of a whole 1 or 5) This is ideal for those tools that don't create a ton of dust, like router stations. Combining that with an emergency cut off switch, with two outlets, gives me the convenience of walking up to the router, hitting one button, getting both the shop vac, and the router go on at the same time, and one quick touch on the off flap, and it is back off again. I tuck the vac under the router table, so it doesn't get in the way, and no vac hose to trip over running across the floor. At a recent local sale, I picked up a couple of them. Between the super quiet vac model, and the quiet router, sometimes I go over and turn it on just to smile. It is that ideal for the purpose.
So get the Jet dust collector, (or the JDS Dust Force, check it out) and get the Woodstock International Collection separator, a ceiling mounted air filtration system, and most importantly a 3M paint spray respirator, because none of these systems really get the job done. The job is avoiding getting the super fine particles into your lungs.
What I really wanted to share with you is the awareness of what a problem super fine particles are. I know these dust collectors and filtration systems, have a tendency of creating a false sense of security. They are great, and serve a much needed task.
Notice when you first walk into the shop in the morning, turn on the dust collector, or air filtration unit, then smell the air. You can smell the wood powder as it pours out into the air. That smell is the small micron or less particles being sent out into the air. Get a mask, and during the warm times, install a fan in a window, with a fresh air source coming from an across the room opening. Take care of your lungs, hope this helps.

This review is from: JET 708626CK DC-1100CK 1-1/2-Horsepower 1,100 CFM Canister Dust Collector, 115/230-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
Ordered this DC-1100CK Dust Collector System through Amazon.com. Took only 8 days to arrive from date of order. The system was delivered by UPS Ground. There were two large separate boxes that were unloaded and left by my garage door. All items were extremely well packaged and there were no damaged parts. Assembly of the entire unit took about 1 1/2 hours with no interruptions. The assembly instructions provided by Jet are excellent. The canister filter system is state-of-the-art all the way. Simply amazing at how efficient this system is. Absolutely no dust whatsover escapes from my table saw, band saw or radial arm saw when attached to the DC-1100CK system. Clear plastic collection bags are a great plus as you know when they need to be emptied or replaced. Jet even included 4 extra bags with the shipment!!! I did not have any of the leaks at the entrance port of the unit that other reviewers have noted in the past. I imagine that Jet has corrected the problem at the factory. My unit was perfect in every way. Very high quality components and great paint finish. This unit provides a huge amount of suction and is very quiet in operation. The large, high grade casters on the base of the unit make it very easy to move around my shop from tool to tool. If you are considering a dust collection system for your shop, this is definitely the one to get!!!!! Jet has a real winner here!!!! Cudos to them for a job extremely well done!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value in dust collection, January 4, 2003

This review is from: JET 708626CK DC-1100CK 1-1/2-Horsepower 1,100 CFM Canister Dust Collector, 115/230-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
Assembly took about 1.5 hours and went together pretty easy, some of the directions are for the non-canister version but are easily skipped. Getting the canister mounted perfectly so there is no sawdust leak is somewhat hard, I ended up getting it as close as possible and using foil tape to finish it. The joint where the 5" inlet for the hose hookup from the blower unit attaches to the filter and collection assembly also leaks. Some caulk and more foil tape closed that off as well. After those two fixes the unit works very well, moves a great deal of air, and is quieter then my old shop vac. Putting the collection bags in and taking them out is very fast and easy. The bag is folded over a round and somewhat springy hoop that is then put into the collection collar and is completely sealed by pulling down on the bag. Took a couple try's the first time to get used to it but is now easy. No leaks have been noticed yet around the bag. I haven't filled the bag yet so I don't know what removal of a full bag is like yet, but after playing around with the collar to get used to it I don't foresee any problems.

After being somewhat disappointed with the performance of the 4" hose and doing some research online I removed the 6" to dual 4" port adapter on the blower hosing and attached a 10' long 6" hose directly to it. This runs to a shop made replacement door on the table saw to get a 6" port on the saw instead of the standard 4". This made an unbelievable improvement in the collection from the table saw. Virtually no dust collects inside the saw cabinet and only a little comes off the top of the blade. I think an over arm guard with a collector pickup would eliminate that as well resulting in almost 100% pickup. With a couple y adapters and blast gates I made two more runs, one to a miter saw and one to the workbench. The run to the miter saw is then split with another y with one branch going to a 4" port cut under the saw and one to the built in 1.5" port on the upper arm. This picks up probably 80-85% or so of the dust. The run to the bench is for the router and hand held sanders and picks up virtually all the dust from those. These are the only tools I have hooked up and cannot comment on collection from any others, but I don't expect any problems as long as the hose and ductwork is laid out correctly.

Overall I am happy with the purchase and would make the same decision again, the only disappointment was with the leaks around the filter and hose hookup assembly mentioned earlier. This was not a deal breaker however due to the easy nature of the fix. The decision to not go with a cyclone unit was based on cost and mobility. This was less then half the price of an equivalent cyclone unit with similar performance and filtering and can be moved around to different areas, a requirement in my garage shop. If needed I believe this unit has enough power to add a separator, but I won't have time to try that for quite some time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but worth it., September 27, 2003

This review is from: JET 708626CK DC-1100CK 1-1/2-Horsepower 1,100 CFM Canister Dust Collector, 115/230-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
After using for a couple of weeks trying to roll the machine around I decided to run a network of 4" pvc around the garage due to the fact that the dust bag/filter assembly wobble around quite a bit when moving the machine. I also changed the wiring to 230 volt because it was drawing so many amps at startup it was killing the flourescent lights(the only 115v circuit available) If you do this beware of the wiring diagram on page 5 of the owners manual - it is wrong. Use the diagram on the inside of the switch cover(which is somewhat hard to see) or the diagram in the BACK of the owners manual. This machine is much quieter than my shop vac and really sucks up the dust and chips. It easily keeps up with my 13" planer which is the furthest machine away from the collector (30 feet of pvc, making 2 90 degree turns and 6 feet of hose at the machine). The plastic collection bag is easy to install and the filter could not be any easier to clean unless they sent somebody over to turn the handle for you. Expensive small dust collector but I have no regrets about buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jet Does it Again! Went for the 1100ck without the remote, October 16, 2004
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: JET 708626CK DC-1100CK 1-1/2-Horsepower 1,100 CFM Canister Dust Collector, 115/230-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
After being sick and tired of expensive clogged shop vac filters and dragging the shop vac from machine to machine I saved up and checked out dust collectors. I like the 2-micron filter and I already own 4 Jet power tools and I have found them to be second to none in the fit & finish quality game. I have to admit even though I was a tool maker for 30 yrs in aerospace mfg, I first got "sucked into" (no pun intended) jet tools because of their excellent automotive like creamy white paint finish. (My gray delta tools seem depressing next to the Jet) After owning their band saw first, I realized the beauty of their tools is much more than skin deep. Still being employed in American Mfg. It is a bit troublesome to me though, to see how well these affordable Taiwan made tools are manufactured today.
I emailed Jet customer service (Mary Turman) because I was thinking about buying the newest version of the 1100ck that has a remote control (1100CKR) I don't have room for this dust collector inside my shop so it will be in the next room. (I think I prefer it that way also) I asked if the remote would work between walls? She wrote back (always within 24hrs or less!) That the remote system they are using has an eye that must be in sight of the remote so unfortunately will not go thru walls. So I bought the $30.00 cheaper 1100CK. I will buy an after market unit for about $50.00 to make it remote thru walls later.
I ordered the 1100CK on a Sunday night with the free shipping and by that Friday night it had been delivered to my garage. You can't beat that for service and FREE!
(I will skip some details that others have already covered so well before me.)
The directions were clear and easy to follow as all my Jet tools have been. ONE NOTE if you open the big cardboard box with the dust collector in it and can't find the big base the wheels and everything attach to??? It's under the Styrofoam box...had me going for a second or two! It took me exactly 1hour and 15 minutes to assemble it and it was very easy. A salesman/woodworker at my local Woodcraft store suggested I put a coat of automotive wax on my band saw when I bought it there a few years ago, so I always put a coat of wax on the painted surfaces of each tool as I put it together. Makes for a slick surface to protect as well as making wiping the dust off quick and effortless. Anyway...the paint was perfect all the parts and screws were there no problems except a dent in the top 2-micron filter. I had to bang in out with a rubber mallet so the canister would mount on the collector. No big deal...you don't even see it.
I can't report how well this will work with whole shop system yet. I am now in process of running hose etc. to run to 5-6 machines with gates. I did a quick hook it up to my planer and to my jointer and I am happy to report this thing really sucks! It took all the chips and dust away and is much quieter that my shop vac. I am very pleased with my latest Jet power tool I know you will not be disappointed with this one if you need good dust control. Buy it for your health.... I think this and the Jet air cleaner I bought 6 months ago are the two tool purchases my wife even is glad I got. Keeps the basement cleaner and my lungs too. I think she wants to keep me around for a while!
Happy Woodworking!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Cyclone Alternative!, September 21, 2003

This review is from: JET 708626CK DC-1100CK 1-1/2-Horsepower 1,100 CFM Canister Dust Collector, 115/230-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've had the DC1100CK for about four months now.

The 1100 was easy to assemble right out of the boxes. All the parts were there, well bagged and easy to identify, and the written instructions were excellent. The only things that gave me pause were the instructions to add a bag bracket (which, of course, isn't necessary on this canister DC), and the floppy felt bag holder, which took a little fumbling to get installed properly. Assembly took me about 45 minutes.

During testing I discovered a couple of little pinholes in the inlet to the bag/canister ring that emitted dust, but small dabs of silicone caulk fixed that problem. The fit and finish on this machine are otherwise unbelievable--it's a pleasure just to look at it.

The unit comes wired for 115v power, although there are instructions to re-wire it for 230v. I stayed with 115 and put the unit on a dedicated circuit after I tripped the circuit breaker a couple of times when sharing the saw's circuit.

The operating noise of the 1100 surprised me. I was expecting it to be louder. Still, I'd recommend using hearing protection any time the machine is on, unless you can put it in a separate room.

I started running it with a 10' long 6" dia. flex hose, which worked very well. I've since built a whole-shop 6" duct system with blast gates. So far it's connected to my table saw, thickness planer, jointer, band saw and a floor sweep. The collector pulls strongly with one tool at a time, but I wouldn't recommend two tools at a time. The only tool that doesn't clear dust very well is the band saw, which has a very poor, 2.5" dust hood that I intend to replace.

Since getting the 1100, the air in my shop has been crystal clear, and the fine dust that used to accumulate on everything has been all but eliminated except for when I sand or use my miter saw. When these tools are on the DC system, I expect that problem to go away.

I clean the filter every week or so by turning the internal flappers two or three revolutions. I've had the filter off once, and found a heavy accumulation of dust around the internal ring beneath the filter, but this doesn't seem to affect performance. There also hasn't been any need to blow out the filter with compressed air during the time I've owned it.

Ideally I would have chosen a cyclone system for my shop, but the money plus the height required for a cyclone made that option unattractive. The 1100 fits under my 7' overhead very nicely and provides near-cyclone performance with a lot of operational convenience. If I were to make any recommendation to Jet, it would be to offer a .5-micron filter as an alternative to the 2-micron filter in order to capture even more of the fine dust that can cause health problems.

Overall, I'd recommend the 1100CK wholeheartedly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jet DC1100CK Dust Collector, December 12, 2002

This review is from: JET 708626CK DC-1100CK 1-1/2-Horsepower 1,100 CFM Canister Dust Collector, 115/230-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
I had the Jet dust collector on back-order since late September and finally received it just before Thanksgiving. I love it! It is the newer style with a canister type cartridge on top. This type was preferred for my basement workshop due to its 7'2" ceiling. The unit is separated into two boxes and shipped on a pallet. When it was delivered, everything was in perfect shape, no parts were missing and it was assembled in about 2 to 3 hours (with interruptions). A 10ft section of clear hose was purchased to hook the unit up to my table saw. Additional clear plastic bags were also purchased from Jet about a month earlier.
Observations; Prior to getting the dust collector, the sawdust used to ooze out of every opening in my Powermatic 66 cabinet saw. It drove me crazy having to take a shop vac and scour the surrounding vicinity of the table saw to clean up the sawdust after an evenings work. After getting the dust collector, things have improved greatly. The DC1100CK applies a huge suction to the inside of the cabinet and has eliminated 98% of the sawdust that used to leak out. Cleanup is easier now! What remains are tiny amounts of sawdust that clean up in a minute or two from the surface of the saw and fence rails. What is still necessary for a complete cleanup is to brush out the inside of the cabinet saw while the dust collector is operating.
I do not have additional powertools connected to the dust collector so the second inlet port has been closed off with duct tape. One minor problem has been noticed and reported to the Jet service department. The unit had a tiny sawdust leak at the welded junction where the 5" inlet tube enters the center housing. This was repaired after removing the housing and resealing with a small dab of silicon.
The motor wiring has been converted to 230 volts to reduce the current usage and improve the monthly electrical bill. Recently, the factory installed pushbuttons were removed and replaced with a small relay and a 2 button pendant control on the end of 20 feet of yellow type STO cord. All in all, the unit has performed great and the noise level is not too severe. I avoided getting one of the smaller units because I wasn't sure of the suction power they provide. I have also wondered how other users know when the cloth type bags are full. After it spills out on the floor? I'm glad I got the DC1100CK!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Dust Collector!, January 6, 2003
This review is from: JET 708626CK DC-1100CK 1-1/2-Horsepower 1,100 CFM Canister Dust Collector, 115/230-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
Mine was on backorder for almost two months but I finally got it a week ago and love it! The new canister really does the job! It took me a little less than an hour to completely set up (with no interuptions) but was not complicated. Directions were clear and all parts were present.

The 1 1/2 hp motor provides plenty of power for my Delta Unisaw! I still get a very little amount of dust that gets thrown up by my saw blade but I will take that over the mounds of sawdust that used to get thrown into the air and all over the floor before.

The clear plastic collection bags work great and do not hinder the dust collection in any way. It is so nice to actually be able to see how much dust has been collected so that you know when to change the bags! It came with three or four extra clear plastic bags too. The flappers that knock dust from the canister filter work great too! Just grab one of the handles and push it around the filter a couple of times and it knocks away most all of the dust that has collected in the filter that day.

There was only one small dust leak where the inlet tube enters the center housing. A little silicon takes care of that easily. It comes on good quality rollers so it moves around from machine to machine easily. In fact, all aspects of the dust collector are of the highest quality. Good steel, nice paint job, quality parts.

Note: Make sure you buy four inch hoses or an adapter that takes you down to a four inch openning.

This is a wonderful piece of machinery. My shop is long (100') and narrow. This machine can work two pieces of equipment that are operating simultaneously on each end of the shop. Clear bags are great. The dust canister on top is nice. The flappers are awesome. You WILL be amazed by the amount of fine dust that is captured by the filter--literally pounds and pounds of superfine dust. My only complaint is that the on/off switch is located on the base. It would be nice if it was located at waist level.

This review is from: JET 708626CK DC-1100CK 1-1/2-Horsepower 1,100 CFM Canister Dust Collector, 115/230-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
I researched numerous dust collectors after grappling with a decision to buy one for three years. I was (and my wife) was frustrated with the mess my planer and joiner made. I finally made the purchase and have not regretted it one day! The collector is very powerful making my workshop easy to clean up. The collector works as advertised with a clean dust capture in the bag. The unit is well crafted and surprisingly easy to assemble with all bolt holes lining up. The provided plastic bags are expensive, but they easily transfer the contents to the Heavy Duty Lawn bags bought from The Home Depot.

I have recommended this unit to all my woodworking friends who are indecisive whether or not they really work. You will not be disappointed one bit - I was not - and I am very hard to please. Enjoy!
