Excellent collector for a small shop,

This review is from: JET 708640 DC-650 1-Horsepower 650 CFM Vertical Bag Dust Collector, 115-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought a Jet DC-650 from Tool Crib in December 99 and I couldn't be more pleased with it's performance. My shop co-exists with the family automobile in a two car garage. The collector is attached to one machine at a time with a 10ft flex hose; in this mode of use, it has all the power that's needed. Before I got this machine, I'd do almost anything to avoid using my thickness planer - cleaning up the mess often took longer than than the planing! And to a lesser degree, the same could be said about my jointer. Without a controlled sampling, I'd estimate that the collector easily captures better than 99.5% of the dust from these machines. Dust collection from my contractors style table saw isn't quite as efficient, but that was expected. I still capture well over 60% of the dust from it. The air is cleaner, the garage is much cleaner, and cleanup time is a fraction of what it once was. I don't fully agree with the notion that bag emptying is a snap; even with improvements to the clamping system, it's still a "pain in the butt" (and I think this comment can probably be generalized to all the Taiwanese made single stage units). This prompted me to add a first stage separator. I use the one built around a 30 gal fiber drum that's sold by Highland Hardware. Now I collect probably 6 times as much material before emptying the drum and bag - and I've devised a method of capturing a 30 gal trash bag inside the first stage drum so emptying it is truly a snap. You don't have to use these machines as they come out of the box; you can put the DC-650 on a larger base that accomodates a first stage separator and a method for holding and transporting the attached flex hose. It's generally agreed that the ultimate dust collector is some configuration of a cyclone, but I don't know where one of these can be found for the money that will equal the mobility and performance of the DC-650. It's very simply an outstanding machine for a very modest price.

Jet DC-650 Dust Collector,
By Clyde Franklin (Everett, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: JET 708640 DC-650 1-Horsepower 650 CFM Vertical Bag Dust Collector, 115-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
Although this is on the low end of power (650 CFM) I find that it works well with my all my tools. Once I found adequate adapters for all the different connections on my sanders, shaper, joiner, table saw, etc. I have found when using cheap 4" sewer pipe for overhead delivery of the vacuum and using as little flexible pipe as possible, to keep down the air flow resistance, it has more than sufficient capacity, if running only one tool at a time. I rate this collector 5 stars on the basis of getting a big return for the investment. If you are looking for a great collector for the one-man shop I highly recommend the Jet DC-650.

I have used this dust collector in my garage/shop for more than a year. It has worked great! I will not, again, go without a dust collector. This one is very mobil and easy to empty and I have had no problems with leaks. I would advise buying another set of bags to filter to .5 micron particles. I have used it on my tablesaw, planer and router table.

You probably want more power.,

The Jet DC-650 is a nice dust collector, but you may want a bit more power. I use the unit in a home shop collection system using 40 feet of 4" rigid sewer pipe as ducting and 4" flexible duct connections to the machines. The DC-650 is remarkably quiet, and provides sufficient collection for one machine (one open gate) at a time (even the table saw and jointer). I also have a 24" floor sweep that is sufficiently powered by the DC-650. Keep in mind that the DC-650 requires all of a 15 amp circuit. Buy a more powerful unit if you can, but make sure that you have a dedicated circuit with enough amperage to run it.

The perfect small shop dust collector,

How did I go so long without one of these? I used to coat my garage shop in sawdust untill I got the Jet dust collector. Now it is much cleaner. Assembly took under 30 minutes. Converted over to 230V in minutes, which is something I have done to all of my tools that allow it. It is quieter than I thought it would be and is more than adequate for attaching single machines to. Bag changes are fairly easy. Get the sweeping attachments and a second stage/trash barrel adapter and you'll put your shop vac in storage.

A great value dust collector,

I am so glad I bought this! This is one of those things that I should have purchased twenty years ago rather than leaving a coat of dust over everything in the garage! So far I have used this with my planer, my cabinet tablesaw, my router, and my open stand bandsaw with excellent results. Ther is little or no cleanup. Easy assembly. My friends and I agreed it was acceptably quiet - you can easily have a normal conversation standing next to the machine. ...you can only connect to one machine at a time so be willing to connect/disconnect or use gates. Definitely get this as a top priority for your shop - your lungs, nose and eyes will forever appreciate it

Cruisin with power tools. One can never have enough. Forgot about how important it was to control the dust(MDF) stands for "man-made dust factory". Although I could have used a larger unit, I can only use one machine at a time. It has got to be better than a shop vac. It is definitely a whole lot queiter. Static pressure is lower but volume is tremendously greater. I might be able to find what is left of my basement yet! If you love wood, than get one of these before you change your mind because of the dust.

Pleasantly surprised with the performance. I have the unit connected to about 30' of 4" pvc pipe and it is more than adequate for my basement shop. I ran a bare copper wire inside the pvc and connected it to an appropriate ground for static purposes. I think the system works so well because I ran the 4" as close to the machinery as possible, and reduced only where necessary to 2 1/2". Utilization of blast gates is a must.

Workhorse for home shop,

This review is from: JET 708640 DC-650 1-Horsepower 650 CFM Vertical Bag Dust Collector, 115-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
This was the second ever Jet tool I bought about two years ago. It had been serving my home shop very well. I have not had any problem with it whats-so-ever. It always starts when I need it. I had couple of times the dust was up to the neck and this thing was still going. It is pretty powerful for its size and that class of dust colloectors as I understand. I made my own 5 micron bag and plan on making a bigger lower bag or add a "window" to it. My shop is 10'X12' and this thing does not take much of room. So it's recommended if you have a small shop and don't run more than one tool at a time.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: JET 708640 DC-650 1-Horsepower 650 CFM Vertical Bag Dust Collector, 115-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've been using the DC650 for about 9 months now. Its a great unit with plenty of power for most any tool. I've used with my shaper and planer (two tools that require a good dust collector)with no problems. The unit assembled with no problem (less than 45 minutes). The unit is on wheels so you can move it to your tools or use it in a fixed location. One word on moving it around, two of the wheels are fixed and two rotate, the fixed wheels make the machine a little more difficult to move. My only other recommendation is to purchase a seperate trash can with a cyclonic (2nd stage) cover. You can buy these from Amazon for about 30 bucks. It will seperate out all of the heavy particles and save you a ton of time emptying dust bags. Overall, I would recommend this unit. |
