After spending countless hours on the internet reading many reviews, this is the dust collector I bought. Although I did not buy it from Amazon I thought this review would help others currently in the market. I got mine from Woodcraft for $299. I think Lowes and Home Depot can get them also. Do a little shopping and then turn companies against each other by price matching. You'll save about 10% off your lowest price. Back to the actual review.
I talked to the guys at Woodcraft. They advised it would be an excellent garage shop DC. But don't expect to put a 20ft 4" hose on it and get great collection. It's designed for a 10ft 4" hose. That doesn't sound like a lot, but I can put the DC in the center of my garage and reach all four corners. As far as the noise level 60-70 decibels. A normal conversation between two adults is 60dB. Just remember for every 3dB increase you double the sound level. An 80dB collector is going to be at least 3 times louder than this one. I find the noise output very comfortable. I can leave my garage door open with the DC running and not worry about the neighbors complaining. Sound alone was a major consideration when looking at other dust collectors. Now on to actual dust collection. I currently have a 10ft 4" dia. hose and a cabinet saw. Still building my router table, and other tools are on their way. This is for the cabinet saw. I have to say that I was quite pleased after a day of cutting half inch plywood. There was a layer of fine dust on the surface of the table, but I have a feeling that no dust collector is going to get all that. Wood Magazine has a good article on dust collectors under 300 dollars. Granted they tested the Jet DC-650 w/ 30 micron bags. At the end of the test they placed a 2 micron canister making the Jet DC-650CK and results showed a 130cfm increase over the already 650cfm. Good article, go read it. Overall I am very satisfied with my dust collector. Even happier that I saved a little money. I have to throw this in. Beware of the review that sounds to good to be true. Companies pay people to write reviews on here. After an hour of reading them you'll notice that some of them sound to much alike. I found reading the (one star) first helped the most, those people usually don't lie.

I bought this unit to replace a shop vac that could not keep up with my projects. This machine works great and is quiet compared to my QSP Shop vac that it replaced. Nice setup at a good price with the canister filter which is rated at 2 micron.

Arrived with a major gash in the box which resulted in a slight dent on the flange that holds the canister. Other than that--no problems. It arrived on time, went together easily and has work flawlessly. Has made a major improvement in dust control. I highly recommend this piece of equipment.

This is the perfect setup for my tiny shop. It is very quiet and will suck up anything that will go through the hose. Don't let it pick up solid objects like chunks of wood, that will fit in the hose. You will get a loud disconcerting clang! (don't ask how I know this) I create a lot of sawdust and wood shavings, and they stay downstairs, now. I did not give 5 stars because of the cantilever design which supports the wonderful canister filter. The manufacturer should add a modest prop to support the filter and make the setup a bit more solid. If you can't afford a cyclone separator type vac unit, this is the next best option, I believe.

The item arrived in good shape and on time. The biggest problem was that I had it delivered to my office mail room, and it arrived with no labels on it as to who it belonged to or where it was from or anything. Since it came by truck, there was no tracking number. I called the mail room several times and was told there was nothing for me. When I visited there for other reasons, there was my dust collector. The staff told me they had no idea who it went to, and they figured someone would come looking for it. My lesson learned is that when I ask if something arrives, I need to describe it more than "two big boxes".
Anyway, it took about a half hour to assemble, following the directions. Plugged it in and it worked as I expected it to. Good suction (it won't carry a house from Kansas to Oz, but it will get the sawdust from one (and only one) woodworking machine. I connect it to my table saw, use that tool, them move the dust collector to the router table, etc. It isn't a huge system, but it didn't cost like one, either. I like the corrugated filter with the beater bar on it. I could have saved some money going with a dust collector that had cloth bags on it, but this one will be better in the long run for me. |
