5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quarterstaff substitute
I ordered this product for use in an English quarterstaff class. Although it's a little short for my ideal quarterstaff length (7' would be better), it's otherwise pretty close to perfect. Mine broke within the first hour of use, and I was being very gentle. These look good, but are very brittle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quarterstaff substitute, March 26, 2007

I ordered this product for use in an English quarterstaff class. Although it's a little short for my ideal quarterstaff length (7' would be better), it's otherwise pretty close to perfect. It has a wider diameter than the rattan bo staves that some of my fellow classmates have, which makes it both more historically accurate and more comfortable to hold. It's extremely sturdy, and the red oak has plenty of weight and momentum. The finish is smooth enough that I don't worry about splinters during grip-sliding exercises, and only has a couple of small flaws. It's only been heavily used in one class so far, so I can't testify to how much punishment it will take in the long term.

If this staff has a flaw, it's that it's *too* nice; this thing is a weapon, and shouldn't be mistaken for anything else. It's a joy to use, but practice with care.

This is a fine, very sturdy oak bo. The only caveat would be that the diameter of this bo makes it more suitable for larger hands. But otherwise, a great staff.

5.0 out of 5 stars hardwood bo, February 7, 2007

This is a nice, six-foot hardwood bo. It is appropriate for traditional martial arts practice and a good weight. I have not had any problems with it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Intentional Ripoff?, September 21, 2011

The item was received on time, but is unusable. For starters... this thing can't be oak or a similarly hard wood. It's too light, but that is the least of my issues. This Bo Staff has 6 separate knots in it which were filled in with wood filler prior to lacquering. It is also warped. I bought this 'hardwood bo' because I need a weapon that could be used for contact as well form. This stick, because or the knots and warpage is suitable for neither. The worst thing about this is how blatantly obvious the flaws are in this thing. So blatant in fact that the manufacturing company made an effort to cover holes with putty. IT WAS OBVIOUSLY DONE BY HAND! There is no concealing the warpage, it's so bad that the staff won't roll at all on a flat surface. Even if the seller did not manufacture the product a 10 second inspection prior to sale should have told them not to sell it. But, they did anyway. So did they send this thing to me on purpose? If I thought it worth my time or money I would ship this thing right back. As it stands, I should be paid a service fee for the time and effort it will take me to fit this 6 foot de-barked and ill finished tree sapling in my garbage pale for pickup.

Bottom line... On the manufacturer's end this item is a malicious and blatant attempt to sell something substandard. On the seller's end this is gross negligence at the least and total disregard for product quality and truth in advertising. All told, ultimately a ripoff tantamount to theft. Both should be ashamed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Bo, Fast Shipping, June 16, 2010

This was the second bo I purchased, the other is a white wax wood staff that is tapered. This "hardwood" bo, which I believe to be made from pine, is just a smidgen lighter and is also a bit less durable. This makes sense, with density intuitively comes durability in my mind, but the difference in durability is HUGE! Let me be clear, both have had the same treatment I believe, but the "hardwood" bo is showing damage and wear much more quickly. This could just be the varnish or lacquer or something, but it is noticeable. Still no cracks in either though after a month of pretty hefty use versus a friend with some shinai.

If you are looking for a cheap light bo with a nice finish, this is the stick for you. Although, you may be just as well served going down to a hardware store and cleaning up a six-foot wooden dowel. That's for you to decide.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fragile, May 4, 2010

This Bo staff is heavy so i wouldn't recommend it for beginners but it is also fragile. I wrapped the middle part of it in electric tape for more support and grip and then i hit the ground in and exercise and I heard a snap. I checked under the tape and saw a huge crack right in the center. I would not recommend this for use or beginners.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Light, June 28, 2011

The wood of this Bo feels very light; I'm guessing it's made of pine or a similar wood. It also sounds hollow, but it's hard to tell. This may or not be what you want for practice, but be aware that it could break if struck hard enough. I'd recommend a heavier wood type; it'd be better exercise anyway in addition to being more practical.

5.0 out of 5 stars good bo staff, June 3, 2010
This review is from: 72" Hardwood Bo Staff (+$5.00 Extra S & H) (Misc.)
ive had mine for about a month now. didnt order it off of here but got it from a martial arts school for about 10 bucks less(it is after all just a stick) and i love it. im pretty much just starting out on okinawan bo fighting and a little bit of quarterstaff alongside to broden my techniqe. aside from a few scratches from me dropping it, it still looks brand new and still spins evenly and freely.

I was not disappointed not only is it beautiful thick and Durable it is a piece of work. I just tested trying to break it by applying all my weight on it and could not even make it budge it does bend and thats good and it is A good weight. just as something to show off or train with its a great piece of wood.
