Let me tell you a story,
By Micheal Hunt (Hellbourne) - See all my reviews
This review is from: '74 Jailbreak (Dlx) (Audio CD)
In 1974 AC/DC released there first album, which was called "HighVoltage" (not to be confused with the world issue)
the tracks where 1. Baby Please Don't Go 2. Shes Got Balls 3. Little Lover 4. Stick Around 5. Soul Stripper 6. You Ain't Got A Hold On Me 7. Love Song 8. Show Business AC/DC's second album was called TNT and when they went international, they released a new international album also named HIGHVOLTAGE which contained most of the songs off TNT except for "School Days" and "Rocker" Then after the tragic death of Bon Scott the fans were still screaming for more Bon! Already DDDDC was released in Australia, but it was banned from US marketing because some idiot thought it was promoting the wrong thing... you know how they are... and so they took one track off DDDDC (Australia) called "Jailbreak" and then added most off what was still unreleased from the OZ HV album.... and that's where the downfall really comes from this re-issue this re-issue should have contained the 2 other songs from the original - Love Song - Stick Around Amongst many others still unreleased to this day! My advice is to not get this album, and go for the Australian release of HighVoltage instead and The Australian Dirty Deeds albums!

AC/DC don't give a sh*t. The record company don't give a sh*t. Bottom line is you WILL eventually pay for this CD even though it only has five tracks and runs no longer than twenty three minutes. WHY? Cuz, it's a blistering five tracks. The deal with this CD is complicated. Before HIGHWAY TO HELL was released in 1979 to much acclaim, most AC/DC albums were tracked differently in the U.S than the original Australian releases. HIGH VOLTAGE (the first album) is actually closer to the bands Aussie second album (TNT). Several songs never made it over seas from the first four AC/DC albums. DIRTY DEEDS wasn't even released in the US until 1981 and was still missing certain tracks. One of them being JAILBREAK. In 1984 the band decided that in honor of their 10th anniversary they would release a retrospective of "lost" material. Stuff that had previously only been available through imports or bootlegs. The collection is great, its just that they could have squeezed at least five or six more songs in. There is STILL a whole bunch of material that isn't available on anything in this country. NOT EVEN a box set. So why didn't the boys in AC/DC do something about this? Because they don't care. Very simple. They aren't going to change anything, because I assume that involves paperwork and stuff. Anyway the songs ARE pisser, and should not be missed, but there are SO MANY other songs that tear it up, and I've only found due to the power of illegal downloading. I surely would have paid for them, had they been made available! KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN FOR (not limited to): STICK AROUND; CARRY ME HOME; COLD HEARTED MAN; ROCK IN PEACE; SCHOOL DAYS; and LOVE SONG.

A Solid Piece of the AC/DC Pie,

If you are a fan of AC/DC then you simply have to own 'Jailbreak'. Sure it's short in length, but it is so full of good music that what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. The song 'Jailbreak' is AC/DC at it's best with Bon Scott's unique and edgy vocals. Angus Young's guitar work is phenominal. 'You Aint' Got A Hold on Me' shows where the band is heading with a more melodic rhythm and catchy chorus, and 'Soul Stripper' shows where the band came from, with a really great blues vocal by Bon. Another highlight of 'Jailbreak' is the cover of Them/Van Morrison's tune 'Baby Please Don't Go'. The instantly recognizable guitar hook is great, and AC/DC takes this classic and makes it their own.
Sure it's a short album, but there is so much jammed in here that you can't pass it over. It may be a little expensive, but honestly I play 'Jailbreak' a lot more often than I play other CD's that I have paid as much if not more for, CD's that will be played once and shelved, so you tell me which one is the better value?

AC/DC - ' '74 Jailbreak' (Sony),

Until I recently dug this five-track mini-album up, I can't remember the last time I heard this vintage title. Think I once had a vinyl copy of this record. No matter, this is AC/DC at their very earliest work. Raw, angry and just plain heavy. However, at the same time, I think '74 Jailbreak' may be more bluesy than any of their other lp's. Play this one repeatedly, you'll have time.Classic track listing: "Jailbreak"(4:40), "You Ain't Got A Hold On Me"(3:30), "Show Business"(4:43), "Soul Stripper"(6:23) and their Big Joe Williams standard cover "Baby,Please Don't Go"(4:50). Simply, a must-have.

Classic rock needs a tab referencing this album. It sounds loose, exploratory? A jam session for the ages and explains how they truly meshed a unique sound. I'm too burned out on the overplayed, more popular albums. This is bluesier, and realizes what I imagine was their raw purity.

I have been a fen of this band for as long as I can remember. I didnt buy this album at firs beacause I thought it was stupid to spend so much on only 5 songs. I was wrong. This album trully shows the band blues influence. The guitar work by Angus is well i hesitate to say but probably some of the best of his. Bon Scott is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. Which is more than I can say for Brian Johnson. I also have to agree with one of th earlier reviews that it is almost worth it for the first and final tracks. But they are all trully awsome.

I know this is AC/DC shortest album and all but this is one of their most concestant albums and also one of their strongest. I bought this for 'Jailbreak' which is the best song on the album by the way. But anyways I bought it for "Jailbreak' and fell in love with the whole thing. All the songs are good. AC/DC's version of 'Baby Please Dont Go' is one of the best versions I have ever heard and I have heard them all. 'Baby Please Dont Go' is one of my all time favorite songs so its hard for someone to please me with their version so that is saying a lot about AC/DC's. If you are a fan of old AC/DC say like the Bon Scott era then you will love this, and if you liked Brian Johnson better you will still love this, you wount be let down, and this you can count on!

Rock N Roll!,

Got this brand spanking new from Fopp in Shaftsbury Ave for a fiver. I'd have been a bit pissed at having to pay a tenner for it, as it's an EP, really. First listen told me this was nothing on the sound they developed and made big time in the hard rock vein. This is a Rock N Roll thang. Very bluesy, and Bon actually sings a bit thanks to Young's chinkier and funkier sound, as opposed to the crunchy, nosebleed sound he popularised. 'Baby please dont go' is a track that was made for DC! The Booklet has some great early shots of the boys, and the back photo is a corker of Bon, with Angus scrutinizing him up close! Well worth a fiver.

This is soo underrated, it's not close to being funny. Believe me when I say that Back in Black is thier best work, but if this album had another 4 or 5 songs of these calibur, This would be 25 times Back in Black. This is also my personal favorite solo album... Each song has a swaggering bluesy solo where if you saw a 15 year old guitarist (Angus was 15 while they recorded these songs) play, you'd s h i t yourself.
Jailbreak - The most well-known track here, and deservingly. The riff is nothing short of brilliant, the lyrics genious and Angus's guitar playing at top-notch, as well as the rest of the band's. You ain' got a hold on me - Sweet little tune, love the little riff. The lyrics are insanely genious and then the solo. This is my personal favorite solo of the CD. It the best solo, infact i think i have ever heard in my life time (Only behind that of the live version of Rocker on If you want blood). Show Business - The opening solo is stunning, what kind of 15 year old kid was this?? The song is very old-school bluesy, with Bon's little magical touch, making it a kind of his own. Soul Stripper - WoW, what a cool song. I love that bass playing at the beginning. This is also a very talented solo provided by Angus. Very cool lyrics. Baby please don't go - I have heard many versions of this song, I thought Aerosmith's version was pretty impressive, but nothing compares with this. A masterpiece!! If you like all of Bon Scotts stuff, but were doubting this because of stupid reviews, don't be fooled. This is alot of his best work. |
