dangerous and false ads on box,
By
This review is from: GE 74196 10-Watt Energy Smart CFL Light Bulb, 40-Watt Output, (Tools & Home Improvement)
well the first thing and only good thing is that while these bulbs are new they look pretty good and work real good but thats where pros end and cons began. well the first con is when they get more than a thousand hours on them they star turning their own colors. for example 2 two packs were purchased and a single pack to go in a 5 bulb fixture in our dining room. one (the first to go out) turned a funny brownish color. another which just went out today had turned a funny purplish color. this purple bulb is dangorous it made a loud pop and stunk up the room with a stink like plastic burning. another (which went out before mr purples had started to turn brown and than just went out with a little sizzle and pop. the 5 th one still works today has not turned any colors but may be holding out for a big surprise at the end of its life! i will let yall know if it does. all these bulbs were put in on the same time on the same day. it was about 3 years ago and i have kept a practical record of their average life. they have beetween 3 to 4 thousand hours on them. thats where false ads come in these bulbs clame to be 8000 hours i would be happy with even just 6000 hours and a peacefull little pop but they are CFB's right. for those of you who do not know what a CFB is it stands for: COMPACT FLOUESCENT BOMB! (NOT LIGHT).

Dim bulb?,

This bulb, GE Energy Smart 74196, 10 watt, 520 lumens, "lasts 5 years", is a lower-brightness bulb compared with the similarly-named, more expensive GE #85382, which is 580 lumens, 10 watts, and "lasts 8 years":GE 85382 Energy Smart 10-Watt T2 Spiral Compact Fluorescent Bulb. There is also the GE Energy Smart 6-pack with similar specs to this one for a bargain $16: 6-Pack GE Compact Flourescent (CFL) Light Bulbs 10 Watt = 40 Watt Equivalent Choose with care. If you don't care about real "40 watt" equivalency, choose this bulb, or consider the cheaper 6-pack, although some reviews object to the low output. If you want better lumen output, choose the 85382. GE shouldn't market different bulbs with the same name.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: GE 74197 10-Watt Energy Smart CFL Light Bulb, 40-Watt Output, 2-Pack (Tools & Home Improvement)
I like the idea of these bulbs, however I find they have two drawbacks. The first, and I've purchased both 40 and 60 watt equivalent bulbs, is that they are really not as bright as the corresponding wattage of an irridecent bulb. Second, I put these in a bunch of my lamps that were on dimmer switches, and guess what, they don't work on dimmer switches. As I said, the idea is good, but the techology needs some improvement.
