Good CD Clock Radio with Alarm Backup incase no power!,
By NIKKG (Farmington Hills, MI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: GE 74901 AM/FM Stereo Clock Radio with CD player (Electronics)
I have been looking for a long time now for a CD clock radio with battery backup that STILL rings when the power goes out and this is one of the very few that actually works. I know most clock radios have a battery backup, however, that only back's up the memory settings, so if the power at your home is out because of a storm or whatever, than most will not ring and you will be late for work, this is the only one I can find that will still ring incase you have a power outage. Also, this clock is cool because it automatically sets the time like one of them atomic clocks, in fact, right when I plugged it in the wall the time was working right away and it even does daylight savings time! Also it has a good decent stereo sound compared to its small size and has alot of settings. Also, this GE has a headphone jack and it sounds good like a walkman when listening to it with earphones. Only bad thing I can think of is that the radio doesn't have a bass and treble setting, but thats no big deal considering how small the speakers are. Overal, this cd clock radio is one of the best on the market especially for the price, you can't go wrong. Peace, NIKKG

Problem playing CDs,
By
This review is from: GE 74901 AM/FM Stereo Clock Radio with CD player (Electronics)
I almost had to return it for a refund, the 2-3 CDs I most wanted to play all in the morning caused such bad clicking, there's just no way I could put up with that. Here's what someone wrote about another similar product, and it's exactly the problem I had:Clack-clack-clack! That's the sound you'll hear too often when you put a CD in this player. The CD itself seems to sit on the turntable fine, but the part of the lid that rests on the CD is loose and often misaligns. So when you lower the lid and spin up the CD, it clatters.

Functionaly Best OVERALL,

This review is from: GE 74901 AM/FM Stereo Clock Radio with CD player (Electronics)
I've been shopping for a cd clock radio for atleast 2 months now.I wanted the cd feature, but it was extremely important that I had an alarm clock that did it's primary job of waking me up even during power outages. Another feature that was important, is that the cd player could play burnt CD-R's. After all of my online research, I finally purchased this cd clock radio. I read one review on here that complained about messed up time settings... and after playing with the clock itself at home, I could see how a mess up might occure without reading the instructions. Because there is a nap timer alarm as well as the original dual alarms. And the less buttons approuch works well, but needs to be understood.
So far I am pleased with my purchase. I enjoy the fact that the clock displays the time, AND both alarm set times all at once. The display is very informative about the settings. The beeping gradu-wake alarm is nice and loud, as well as the radio alarm... but for some reason the cd sound dosen't seem as loud as I would prefer it to be without becoming muffeld somewhat. But it is an alarm clock afterall. I also enjoy the daylight savings feature, and the display brightness controls.
This clock has the best overall package. Less mechanics, self top loading cd door = less mechanical problems in the future. The features are good and effective. The price is resonable. If I had to complain at all, I guess I would wish for this clock, but with bigger speakers and a treble bass controller.

Poor quality,

I did a lot of research before I bought this clock because it had all the features I wanted. The design is good, but the quality was so poor that I strongly recommend against purchasing this product.
All of the plastic was of a very cheap quality, and numerous buttons kept breaking. I took this stupid clock apart 4-5 times to fix various buttons that quit working. Finally, I couldn't fix the back button, and so when setting anything (time, alarm, etc.), if I overshot my intended setting I had to go ALL the way around to get back again (which took a LONG time). Also, the spring on the CD cover quit working--didn't reduce the functionality since I could lift it by hand, but speaks to the overall poor quality of this product. I finally dug my old clock out of the closet (the one I bought this one to replace), and threw this one away! It's junk.

Good product once it works.,
This review is from: GE 74901 AM/FM Stereo Clock Radio with CD player (Electronics)
I purchased one of these GE clocks and found that there were no instructions on the clock in the box. Actually there were, but to a different clock by GE.
The automatic time set "did not" work, the clock is more complicated than others and I, to this date still have not been able to locate a manual on this thing. I have addressed it directly to GE and have not been redirected to anyone or even heard from them yet. I have figured out the settings of the time, wake alarms etc..., but still have yet to figure out how to set the day. The week bar up top just continues to flash and anoying the crap out of me. The product is rather neat in appearance and has great features and it is for that reason I give it a 4 star. If it were for the service in which a person gets when it comes to locking for product knowledge, I give it a "1", and that's generous.

I bought this model from a competitor. I threw away my old Sony the alarm just decided to quit. Very easy to set, just chose my time zone and the clock automatically worked. About a week after purchase the snooze bar did not work. I experienced a power outage a week later, the clock was about 2 min. fast and I could not reset my alarm wake up time. The last straw was the alarm went off at 4:30 am, when it was sent for 6:00 am. Removed batteries from the battery back up and unplugged from wall. The clock just blinked and blinked, could not set anything. I ended throwing the clock away. Emailed Thomson Industries, GE does not make the clock and never got a response back.

Quality Issues,
By A Customer
This review is from: GE 74901 AM/FM Stereo Clock Radio with CD player (Electronics)
I've had this clock for about 9 months. I got it because it had CD, nap, & headphone capablilites. The features are great, but the quality of the unit is not very good. I found:
1. Controls confusing to use (& remember at 6 am!) 2. It made a humming sound on FM stations at low volume when using headphones. 3. CD player made clicking sounds when playing. At low volumes this is really distracting. 4. It began making random clicking sounds at all hours of day and night about a month ago. Bad wiring? 5. The "automatic" time feature is misleading because it only works if there are batteries in the unit. They install these at the factory, set the time, & ship it out. It uses the batteries to keep the time until you buy it. If you unplug the unit and remove the batteries, it has no idea what time it is when you turn the unit back on. You have to manually re-set the time. 6. Today it fell off my 12" high nightstand (cat) & the LCD display packet broke. So, now I can't tell what time it is. I'm not buying another one.
