Book Description

July 4, 2011
"I lifted the child from the river and into my arms, cradling her limp body against my chest. She felt small and light and she was not breathing, but I couldn't do anything about that perched precariously midstream. I spun my legs sideways and the current swept us back into the river. My feet touched bottom and I took several steps toward shore, then swam when the current knocked me down." Entropy is a law of nature, the one predicting that "things fall apart." Spend enough time outdoors and it will eventually happen to you. When it does, who will pick up the pieces? Who will glue them back together?
Professional search and rescue volunteers leave work, home, and their cozy beds to rescue people on the worst day of their lives. They buy their own gear, pay their own gas, and ask nothing more than to make a contribution to the lives of strangers who they'll probably never meet again.
These detailed first-hand stories, intimately told by 12-year SAR veteran and university writing instructor Shaun Roundy, capture the essence of how it feels to be in the middle of a rescue with one of the world's best and busiest volunteer teams - from both the victims' and rescuers' perspectives.
Included are rescues that captured the national spotlight such as the Thanksgiving Nutty Putty Cave incident, the Aspen Grove Christmas avalanche, Elizabeth Smart, and more. 150 action-packed photos complete your sneak peek into the world of mountain, river, lake, cave and urban rescue.
A portion of sales proceeds from this book supports volunteer search and rescue.

Editorial Reviews

Review

If you don't have a copy of 75 Search and Rescue Stories in the mail to your  address right now, I highly recommend you get one. This is the best rescue book by far that I've ever read.
- Mountain Rescue Association Meridian book review

About the Author

In Shaun Roundy's 12 years as a professional search and rescue volunteer, he has served as Public Information Officer, Webmaster, Board of Directors Secretary and Vice President, Mountain Rescue Team Sergeant, Mountain Rescue Association Intermountain Region Secretary and Chair, and MRA Education Committee Training Resource Database Task Force Chair. But above all these positions, Shaun values being a simple team member on the mountain, in the midst of the action, where his efforts matter most.
As a key member of the Utah County Sheriff Search and Rescue team, Shaun has logged hundreds of missions ranging from nearly 12,000' mountains to rivers, lakes, cliffs, caves, and more, along with urban searches. Drawing from this wealth of experience, the stories contained in this volume are among the most memorable for many reasons. Along with his rescue credentials, his professional pursuits further qualify him to write 75 Search and Rescue Stories. As a university writing instructor, he has taught thousands of students how to make their words paint vivid, multi-layered pictures and make readers' hearts beat a little faster.

More About the Author

Shaun Roundy's cv reads like a character from an action-adventure movie. Alongside writing half a dozen books in various styles, he has taught writing to thousands of university students, climbed 18,000' mountains, sailed 2,500 miles through two oceans, speaks half a dozen languages, lived on four continents and a tropical island, saved dozens of lives as a member of an active volunteer Search and Rescue team, chaired the Mountain Rescue Association's Intermountain Region, appeared in the Discovery Channel's "Raging Planet - Blizzards" and KUED's award-winning "Secrets of the Lost Canyon", along with many appearances on the evening news. The list goes on and on.

As a writer, he seeks primarily to entertain and inspire. "The best thing about writing is hearing that my readers stayed up all night reading because they couldn't stop, or laughed or shouted out loud, or that the plot caught them totally by surprise, or that they related to some character or insight that changed their life."

There are lots of books out there written from the perspective of the stranded hiker, fall victim, or mountain bike accident victim. They tend to look at rescue as a binary function: they are saved, or they are not.

This book is written from the other side of the gap, and outlines just how non-trivial the rescue process is. The amount of time and resources spent on a single rescue is incredible, and often the risk assumed by the rescuers far outweighs the risks that they would choose to take if a life weren't on the line.

This book is a great read for anyone who finds themselves in the backcountry, always assuming that rescue is a phone call away. Hopefully this will stick in your mind and help you choose the conservative choice next time the weather is turning and you start thinking "I wish I had a jacket..."

This book is well worth twice the price charged, especially given that part of the proceeds are donated to SAR. Divided into quick, engrossing chapters that each tell the story of a SAR operation, it's immensely readable. Some stories will make you laugh, some will leave you in awe. Shaun Roundy has a fast-paced, light-hearted writing style that never bogs down. Everyone in Utah County should read this before heading to the mountains or the lake; maybe then we'd have fewer people getting ledged out on a cliff in a t-shirt with no gear every month.

I have never required the assistance of SAR, but my brother did, and some these stories seriously brought tears of gratitude to my eyes. Anyone considering volunteering for SAR or something similar (working at a mountain resort, national park, or similar) should definitely read this first to get a feel for what they might be facing and to understand the mindset required.

If you stumbled across this book and are wondering whether to buy it: I promise you will not regret the purchase. It's a book I'll proudly display on my shelf for years to come. The selfless sacrifice SAR volunteers undertake is nothing short of inspiring, and this book is an easy and fun way to learn more about SAR and support it at the same time.

Once I started reading this book, it seemed like an injustice to put it down!
Waiting inside were the tales of desperate victims, anxious heroes and the land they challenged which threatened to steal their lives! The heartfelt stories of love, loss, hope and failure kept me enthralled as I experienced the thrill of success, the tearful suffering of the hopeless and the exhilaration of the search.
This is a heart pounding, tear jerking, hooraah eliciting collection of stories of amazing volunteers whose quest is simply to help those in need.
