A Real Help for German Learners,
By Steve Irons (Minneapolis, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 750 German Verbs and Their Uses (750 Verbs & Their Uses) (Paperback)
Simply put, this book is essential for the German language learner who want to master the spoken language. Its strengths are that it not only covers petty much all but the most specialized verbs in the language (believe me, 750 verbs are more than you'll ever actively use), but it also illustrates them in context -- giving you the variant meanings when used with different cases and in conjunction with different prepositions. These last two points pose the biggest difficulties in using German verbs properly. Regular practice with this book would benefit ever the most advanced students of German. Now, it the publisher of this book would just craft a good verb workbook, using this book as a basis, we would have a very powerful learning tool!

Intermediate To Advanced Reference For Verb Usage,
By Mikey (Portland Or) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 750 German Verbs and Their Uses (750 Verbs & Their Uses) (Paperback)
This is a fairly comprehensive treatment of explaining German verb usage by providing sample sentences for each verb contained in the text. As German verbs can be somewhat complex for the English speaker, these example sentences provide a valuable reference for students. However, I would not recommend this book to a beginner as the sentences and vocabulary contained within them are on a more advanced level. I would wait until I had at least the equivalent of one semester of German before I purchased this volume. The one problem that I did have with this book is that, while rich in providing sample sentences, there were no attempt to provide any detailed notes explaining verb usage and other fine points and nuances of when a verb was or was not used in a particular situation. You are forced to infer this from the sample sentences alone. Some additional explanatory notes would have been helpful. But for the price, this is a great addition to the collection of any individual making a serious attempt to study the German language.

Excellent,

German has so many different things to remember, that it could make it hard for one to succeed in his/her class. I liked this because it gave you the syntax if it changed in each case as well as good examples.

Excellent for beginner-to-intermediate German!,
By A Customer
This review is from: 750 German Verbs and Their Uses (750 Verbs & Their Uses) (Paperback)
This title covers a broad range from leisure reading to good reference. The grammar summary is short and sweet. Of most interest to the student of German, however, is that the application of grammar & vocabulary happens very naturally through progression in the book, just as a child adopts the basic language structure of the country in which he is born long before he studies it methodically in school. I am tempted to go so far as to say this was "fun" reading, as many of the examples given in German convey humourous expressions that might otherwise be supposed by Americans to be native to our culture.

Ausgezeichnet!,
This review is from: 750 German Verbs and Their Uses (750 Verbs & Their Uses) (Paperback)
This is simply the best book for learning German I've ever read. I've had difficulty in progressing from the intermediate to advanced stage, and this book is the best resource I've found to do so.
I find it hard to be confident in the things I say, so I've started memorizing the very helpful examples provided in the book after each verb. I've highlighted the ones I might use myself and can know with certainty that I'm speaking proper German.

Good reference, but you might not need this book,
By CG (Kreis Regensburg, Germany) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 750 German Verbs and Their Uses (750 Verbs & Their Uses) (Paperback)
I bought this book because I'm learning German (while living in Germany). I've used it a few times for my German class, but I really don't use it that often. I'm fully immersed in German and do much better through trial-and-error. Not to mention that it's near to impossible to reference a book in the middle of a conversation, it's better to just ask the other person.I think this book is best for helping with homework or if you often need to write in German. If this is the case, it's a really good reference with examples of how to use commonly used verbs. If you just want to learn to speak and understand German this book may not be necessary for you, but it might be nice to have around. |
