5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best verb references for Russian!
Although it isn't as exhaustive as Daum and Shenk's verb tome, this book is perhaps even more essential for the Russian language learner. Although it isn't as exhaustive as Daum and Shenk's verb tome, this book is perhaps even more essential for the Russian language learner. Its strengths are that it not only covers petty much all but the most specialized verbs (believe me, 750 verbs are more than you'll ever actively use), but it also illustrates them in context -- giving you the variant meanings when used with different cases and in conjunction with different prepositions. These last two points pose the biggest difficulties in using Russian verbs properly, once the learner has mastered the conjugations and the idea of aspect. Regular practice with this book would benefit ever the most advanced students of Russian.

Now, if someone would just craft a good workbook using this book as a basis, we would have a very powerful learning tool!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, September 6, 1999

This review is from: 750 Russian Verbs and Their Uses (Paperback)
I found this book to be very useful; I appreciated the examples that show the various meanings of the verbs. It usually gives at least two examples for each verb, often more. However, it does not show the complete conjugation of each verb, which is useful when learning Russian. It does have an appendix which explains conjugation, but it is not convenient to use. Overall, though, I found this book extremely interesting and useful, and recommend it for students of Russian.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the most useful Russian reference book I have seen., July 28, 1998

This reference book is a have-to for students of Russian. It goes beyond the other verb conjugtion manuals by giving specific times when the verb (and its forms) would be used, the cases used in each example, and sample items. You need this one to master Russian verbs!

4.0 out of 5 stars good reference, August 16, 1999

This review is from: 750 Russian Verbs and Their Uses (Paperback)
This book is a good source for information about certain verbs. An average dictionary will simply translate the verb. A good dictionary will also give you the governance (some verbs govern certain cases). This book allows you to find out all this information very quickly. It also gives a lot of examples. However, it is only limited to 750 verbs and does not give you all the translations a particular verb might have in various contexts like a good dictionary would have. It only gives you the most popular translations and usage. But it is still a very good reference and every serious student of Russian should have this book in their personal library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly indespensable, November 27, 2001

This review is from: 750 Russian Verbs and Their Uses (Paperback)
I've been using this book for 1 1/2 years now and its dog-eared quality is second only to that of my main textbook. Its sample sentences are what bring new verbs alive to me. I've had Russian friends tape record these sentences as I've encountered new verbs, so I've gotten the benefit from both print and aural presentations of the book's contents. If I hadn't bought this book I would have had to invent it myself. It, together with 501 Verbs: Fully Conjugated and the Russian/Eng dictionary are my triumvirate. There is zero chance you'll regret this purchase.

Anyone studying Russian should have this book. The many examples of usage are what make it so incredible. It does't replace a standard dictionary, but it is an outstanding supplement. I can say that it is a big help to me and is a book that I highly recommend to people.
