5.0 out of 5 stars Go Green!!, July 25, 2009

This review is from: 750GB SATA II 7200 RPM 16MB (Personal Computers)
I have this drive and WD's next generation of the same drive, WD7500AADS, the one with 32 MB of Cache.
I used these two drives in my HP Media Vault 2120 and love it. I didn't choose to do a RAID, so I have a combined 1.3 TB of storage in the Media Vault.

One thing to note, the drives work great but data transfer does not seem to be quite as fast as the Blue Caviar or my Seagate Baracudas. What I mean by that is when I transfer lots of files from one drive to the other, I think the transfer rates are slower sing Windows Explorer. Of course I know Explorer has a lot of overhead that may slow down transfer rates but the Seagate Baracdas seem to large amounts of data (like 200 GB or so) much more quickly.

I like the idea of power savings however, since the NAS is always running. These drives are ridiculously cool to the touch. They are much cooler to the touch when in use versus other HDDs. For a little sacrifice in performance, I get drives that are much cooler and uses less energy.

If you need all out speed, these are the wrong drives for you. If you need alot of storage and use these either as a backup or in a NAS, these drives are perfect. Go get a WD Black or WD Raptor if you need speed to run your games and get one of these drives to store all your music and photos.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far so good!, June 16, 2009
A nice hard drive. Its a "green" hard drive so it uses less power. Runs quiet and works just fine!

btw, its only 700gb not 750.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite and cool drive on the cheap, May 15, 2009

The drive installed perfectly. It runs quite and cool in my freenas (freeNAS.org) box. As with all hard drives, it comes down to longevity and that is not something that I can review 3 weeks after purchase. If you are going to mirror the data than that is less important.

Installed this HDD 3 weeks ago and made it my primary. Nice upgrade from my old 80GB. Noticeable jump in operating speed, but that could also be attributed to a clean windows start.

Not much you can say about a hard drive unless it doesn't work. This drive is very reliable so far, it is fast, and is a good value. Recommended. Just plug, format and play.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works., March 23, 2009

OK well first, Ive read alot of horrible Western Digital reviews, but if you read up on any hard drive on amazon, its pretty hard to NOT find bad reviews.

I bought this so i could use it with my Blacx HDD Rack as my secondary. At first, it wasnt even detected by my BIOS but I looked around on google for a solution, glad I did.

For windows:
Just press start > (right-click) my computer > manage > (right-click) disk management > all tasks > initialize > (right click) disk 2 or whatever drive you want to format > hit new disk volume and make sure you hit quick format and enable disk compression or youll be there for hours.

After this was done, it worked like a charm. Ive read alot of reviews WD hard drives messed up over time
So ill update this if mine goes dead
It shouldnt anytime soon though because its not my primary

Been running this 24/7 with medium activity with no problems. I've got it in an external USB 2-bay box. Let's see what happens...

Purchased this HDD to add capacity to my HP MediaSmart server - pretty cool little server that runs Windows Home Server. Anyway, installed the drive; works great.

Got the disk from Amazon. As usual, Amazon packed it well and shipped it fast.

Runs fast, quite, cool (temperature readings never reach 35 degrees on Celsius), as opposed to my seagate disk.
Power consumption measured by Kill-a-watt in external enclosure is 4W (I bet it's less).

Conses? It's not 2Tb disk.

I got this drive to replace a Maxtor 500gb drive that has way too many bad sectors for being just over a year old. I downloaded the utility from the main website. Plugged this drive in a and let the utility copy everything for me. With a quick reboot i was up and running in no time.
