I put in a 120GB SSD, 8GB of ram, and a fresh copy of Windows 7 to get rid of the bloatware and it definitely improved the usability. The boot time is 17 seconds - and that's from pushing the power button to being able to actually do things in Windows. Really loving this laptop.
1. Switchable graphics card: Sounds great on paper. You have one low power consuming card for day to day tasks and one high power card that can play games or graphics intensive programs. HOWEVER, this does not work as advertised. If you have any programs that run on OpenGL (Minecraft, Photoshop, Solidworks, etc) The high power card WILL NOT TURN ON. You can set your graphics settings any which way you want, but it will still use the low power junk intel card. Note that this problem is not specific to just this computer, but effects a wide range of laptops that run Intel/AMD switchable graphics. Do your research before purchase. My advice is to STAY AWAY from this technology until they can figure out how to properly implement it.
2. Acer customer service is HORRIBLE!!! It essentially consisted of 5 seperate email responses that had me restating the above issue all 5 times to different people before they recommended that I try their $99 per question service. Not cool Acer, not cool.
The laptop comes with 4 slots for RAM. Only two are currently used, so you can cheaply upgrade to have more RAM.
The laptop comes with another hard drive bay, but the back casing will not fit properly with this additional hard drive. I even removed the webbing that is in the way and the casing will still not close completely. May be a good option if you just want to get some old files off your previous hard drive.
On the negative side, I didn't really like Acer's choice of hard drive. While of good quality, it's a little slow (5400RPM) and had a very small memory cache (8GB). Again, for professional needs, I replaced the stock hard drive with a Seagate Hybrid drive, which spins at 7200RPM and boasts a 32MB cache along with the 4GB flash memory. The drive sped things up tremendously. Windows and all of my work programs load and execute almost instantly. My only regret is that Acer should have included this as buyer's option.
As an added bonus, there are hidden compartments inside the case that can support an extra laptop drive and a PCI Express device (cell modem, perhaps?). The second drive bay while allowing an extra device to be seated and activated, is too shallow to allow proper closure of the case. As for the PCI Express slot... time will tell if I decide to experiment with it.
All in all, a good laptop!
