This collection of music (3 CDs) and video (1 DVD) wants to be in the collection of any Tuxedomoon fan. Rather than being a back catalog reissue set, this box set mixes old and new material to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary and give a snapshot of the band both now and then. Vapour Trails, the most recent studio album (at the time of the box being issues)shows where the band is now, as eclectic and accomplished as ever. A live show comprises another disc. The recording quality is very good and the entire show is recorded, banter and all, so that the atmosphere of the event is retained. The material performed in the show is mostly from the last two studio albums. The third audio disc is a treasure of unreleased tracks ranging across the entire career of the band in its various incarnations, all the way back to a 1977 demo. Sound quality varies, as is to be expected, but is no distraction. It's not something most people are going to listen to frequently but will be glad to have access to. Finally, there is a DVD with a tremendous range and amount of material: a performance of Ghost Sonata, impressionistic short pieces, music videos. Again, the quality varies and some of the content has more historical than aesthetic value, which is acknowledged as much in the liner notes by Bruce Geduldig, long-time visual collaborator/member of Tuxedomoon, who compiled the DVD content. Still, the variety of material and the fact that much of it has never been seen by most fans, makes up for any technical shortcomings.
If you are a fan of Tuxedomoon is it impossible for me to think that you would be disappointed by this collection of material. For me, it's one of my best music purchases in the past year.
