5.0 out of 5 stars Great game, completely underrated, April 17, 2003
This review is from: 7th Saga (Video Game)
For all true RPG gamers, this game is a must for your collection. These days, almost every RPG you play makes it so easy for you, ie. FFX, where your health completely rejuvenates at every save point! Games such as this one are so classic and old school that they make it a true challenge. It's one of the hardest games I've ever played; if you hate leveling up and being strategic and having to THINK in battles, this game isn't for you. But this is why I love it. You're not just sitting there and "kill, kill, kill," but you must think or else you'll never get farther.

Leveling up does great, but it doesn't always cut it. Strategy is the main key to this game. Think about this...you're stuck on a boss character, so you go level up for six hours and come back, and low and behold, the boss has also leveled up and is even harder! This is why no matter how strong you are, the battles will still be a challenge. This is sort of annoying at times, but overall makes the game much more smart.

Sorry for rambling, let me tell you a little about the game's story. You get to choose between 7 characters in the beginning. It took me a few times to actually find out what character I liked the best. They all have certain advantages and disadvantages. For instance, Esuna (female elf) is extremely powerful with magic and has great agility, but is so phsyically fragile that one blow can often kill her. Quite the opposite of Lux (the robot) who has very strong defense and requires no armor, but isn't very good with magic and has slow speed. Your mission is to go out and find the seven runes scattered over Ticondera. Whoever finds them all will gain a huge amount of power and will be able to control the world.

One of the neatest features in the game is that you can find the other 6 warriors looking for the runes in towns throughout the game. You can talk to these people and they will either want to become your companion, fight you, or just to say something silly. It's always wise to have a companion with you, and especially one that balances you out.

There's not much else to say, except that the game is extremely hard. It's always the little things though, so as your armor never gets strong enough, you don't gain levels fast enough, and most annoyingly, you can only carry up to 9 of each item at a time! (Think only 9 potions in a horrific dungeon!) But that is what makes up the beauty of the game. I definitely recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of Enix classic games, July 15, 2001
This review is from: 7th Saga (Video Game)
I had first saw this game in 1992. It immediatly climbed to #1 on my list. The story was decent, but the platform was unique. It played like no other RPG at the time. There were aspects that were confusing, but what was really neat was that depending on what character (of the seven) you choose, depends on the progression of the game. Certian characers will intereact differently with the NPC's then others. If you are for the classics, then this RPG is THE one to find. Currently only for SNES. It's worth buying. A splendid game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Something that has gone unmentioned, May 21, 2004

I agree that this game requires strategy, but what isn't said is that the game seriously lacks a sense of balance. It isn't too hard to go through the tower, but the you get to the Earth cave and BANG, you take three or so hits from a zombie and its all over. Actually get to the Scion at the end of the cave and you'll be gone in less that that. I like the fact that in other RPGs you can actually level up to get stronger than a boss, but in this game, the bosses get harder, so you have to use "strategy" (aka luck) to beat certain bosses. It could have been so good if it were balanced, like Final Fantasy games, which, in the old days, actually did require strategy.
