3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, BUT... November 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD
This is an excellent set of CDs; it contains several of my all-time favorite Chet Atkins albums, including The Most Popular Guitar, Chet Atkins' Workshop, The Other Chet Atkins, and Christmas With Chet Atkins. And for the price, it's simply fantastic...

I had originally played my LPs into the computer just to save them and prevent any further wear, but this set kind of makes that unnecessary; the sound quality is excellent. The cover says "Digitally Remastered and Enhanced for Superior Quality", and it certainly sounds like it; I've heard several LP reissues that sound like they were recorded from the LP itself, complete with crackles and other surface noise...

My only negative about this set has to do with After The Riot At Newport... the guitar on several of the tunes (Relaxin', Riot-chous, others) is NOT Chet Atkins; being a huge fan of his since at least 1965 and hearing most of the recordings he's done, I think I can safely say Chet doesn't play jazz like this; he's not even on those tunes. The tunes he DOES play on are unmistakable.

Also, in trying to import these CDs into iTunes, CDDB, which is the online system that inserts the titles and other info into your MP3s, was unable to come up with information for the 1st CD. The other three worked fine.

I was more interested in the old albums included in this set, so I got this one before "8 Classic Albums, Vol 1", but I'll probably get that one too.

Addendum 11/13/2013: According to Wikipedia, the personnel on After The Riot at Newport is as follows: Chet Atkins and Hank Garland, guitar; Boots Randolph, sax; Brenton Banks, piano & violin; Floyd Cramer, piano; Bob Moore, bass; Buddy Harman, drums; and Gary Burton, vibes (age 17!).

4.0 out of 5 stars Instrumental Fan June 29, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Not nearly as good as the first volume. I like instrumentals and expected this to be exactly that, as was the first volume. Disc one is mainly vocals and, at least for me, very disappointing. Discs 2, 3 and 4 were great. So I would have to say that this set is 3/4 great and 1/4, not so much.

There's only one Chet Atkins and this album will demonstrate why he's considered the master.. A nice mix of tunes with varied tempos. wonderful dinnertime background but good for anytime background!

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as Volume 1 January 10, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Always been a fan of Chet Atkins, but was too young to have all the vinyl albums represented in the two collections. I bought Volume One primarily to get "Chet Atkins in Hollywood", and wanted have more of Chet's music. You can't beat the prices for eight albums per set. It's hard to compare sound quality, then and now, because no one's hearing is the same after over 50 years, but for the price I'll make the sacrifice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Warning! Not all tracks are the same as original albums January 30, 2013
By Donald
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Upon listening to the CDs, for those of you who are wondering, all are stereo, and the digital transfer is crisp and clear. However, as I mentioned in the title, not all of the tracks are the same as the original albums ("Til There Was You", for example, and most of the tracks from "Chet Atkins' Workshop" seem to have alternate takes). I would've rated it higher were it not for this, but if you are thinking about buying, keep in mind you may be disappointed if the tracks don't sound the same. Other than those, the rest of the tracks sound original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Chet Atkins Rarities February 6, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Chet Atkins is the greatest guitar player who ever lived, and these albums were from his 1960s middle period. The Newport Jazz Festival album contained in this CD set, is a stand-alone masterpiece album, with Chet teaming up with Hank Garland and putting across some of the best jazz guitar playing; Hank's improvisational flights and Chet's soulful, more bluesy jazz. They compliment and supplement each other so brilliantly. If you play guitar, get this CD set while you can.

A must have for serious guitarists and for anyone who enjoys listening to great guitar playing. I am a guitarist who has been playing since I was ten years old and I thank GOD every day for Chet Atkins. Chet has been the primary influence for my musical development. Thank you Chet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable value for older Chet Atkins recordings August 19, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The price of this set makes it an unbelievable value. The recording quality is excellent and clear, way superior to what I expected from such an inexpensive set. The set contains the music from several older albums, Atkins recordings that I haven't seen elsewhere. The best tracks are those that are not overly produced (!). A real surprise are tracks from the 60s that are great light jazz in the vein of Street Dreams and Sails CDs. In a way, though, what gives the set it's value also costs it one star in my view. The albums included are so different that the sequence of the tracks is uneven and a bit distracting. The first disk really isn't primarily Chet Atkins ... it's a Nashville Ray Coniff chorus clone, with Chet as the background. Great background ! The chorus is pretty good for what it is, but not what I was expecting. In addition, some of the tracks in the set are just odd, like Begin the Beguine, with a really weird instrument included. Still, a great value for great recordings from Mr. Guitar.
