The Ameriwood Eight Inch Independently-Encased Coil Premium Futon Mattress is a mattress with a long name and a relatively small price. As may be expected by the name, it is a futon mattress, and as such can be folded and used as a futon sofa, or left flat and used like any other mattress. As a bed, it will easily fill out a full size sheet set and can be used on a bed frame or by itself on the floor.

I spent months sleeping on a pretty pricy air mattress before it (predictably) sprang a leak. I didn't want another air mattress, but I couldn't afford much with a college student's budget. After spending a few hours online reading through pages of overwhelmingly positive reviews, I settled on the Ameriwood Eight Inch Independently-Encased Coil Premium Futon Mattress and hoped that I had made the right decision. It arrived about a week later, compressed and rolled up.

While the mattress was quite heavy, I managed to get it into my room without help. After getting the mattress where I wanted it, I carefully cut off the plastic and stepped back as the mattress unrolled itself and inflated. It was quite entertaining to watch, and certainly made up for all the effort I'd spent getting it into my room! The instructions did recommend giving the mattress a few hours to fully expand and give the coils a break from being compressed for so long, but after the mattress had had a little while to sit, it was ready for use.

This is a wonderful mattress. Since I use mine as a bed, I have sheets on it, but the microfiber cover is very soft and probably wouldn't need sheets if it was going to be used exclusively as a sofa. The mattress is unbelievably comfortable and very supportive.

I had to replace my old futon mattress recently, and before buying the Dorel futon, I had purchased one from an online store that specialized in products that were excess in inventory. I had purchased other products from that store before, but this was the worst. So I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this mattress, especially since the price points were almost identical. It's a firm mattress, you can barely feel the coils, and the foam is a little lumpy at first but it evens out great!

PROS:
Fast, free (prime) shipping.
Very reasonably priced.
Packaging is water proof and easy to get in the house. Also, there are lots of silica gel packets which keep the mattress from getting moldy in said packaging (yeah for not cutting corners).
Beautiful beige microfiber cover.
The 8" mattress is a full 8 inches, most likely to the straight side seams.
Firm, with bounce and you barely feel the coils.
DOES NOT SMELL. (lesson from other purchase You may smell something so faint if you bury your face in it, but this really isn't awful and I'm very sensitive to smells.
HAS Tags. who sells mattresses without tags? seriously. another lesson)
Thick and firm, you barely make a dent in the mattress when you sit in it, but it folds really well in the seated position.
You could technically take the cover off and wash it (unlike the other mattress, which was only 20 dollars cheaper) this cover covers a mesh enclosed mattress. But I'll probably be putting a waterproof pad and an additional cover to this baby anyway (which is in the end why I had to purchase a new futon.)

CONS:
The back of the mattress is made of cheap black polyester, like the stuff you lay on mulch for landscaping but better.

I had no idea that one could buy a futon mattress and have it shipped directly to one's home, much less qualify for free shipping. I was somewhat skeptical, but there's no longer anywhere to buy a decent quality futon in this whole region, and Ol' Lumpy, which served as our living room sofa, was getting intolerable to my butt.

When the package *finally* arrived -- delayed by our lazy shiftless UPS driver and his evasive, enabling supervisors -- and I fished it out of the snowdrift in front of my neighbors' house -- I was even more skeptical. How could an 8" innerspring mattress roll up into a cylinder that was less than 12" in diameter?

The mattress was packaged inside an outer fabric bag -- which I had to cut off -- a heavy plastic tube, and a vacuum-sealed inner plastic bag that had clearly been evacuated by something like the world's largest FoodSaver and then rolled and taped. Brilliant.

As I was cutting the tape on the last layer of packaging, I breached the vacuum sealed-layer and the mattress began dramatically inhaling. The general effect once I'd cut it free of the tape was of one of those old sitcoms in which Dad orders a military surplus life raft and pulls the ripcord in the kitchen. Possibly we are easily entertained, but this was extremely cool. Wish I'd videoed it.

The futon had achieved enough fluff within about four hours of standing on edge in the kitchen to put it on the frame and sit on it. Per the instructions, it did continue to expand a bit for the next day or so.

This futon is springy and comfortable used as a sofa. It stays folded and does not slide off the frame. When the 40# dog perches on the back like Snoopy on his doghouse, it does not smoosh down.

It does not and did not smell bad.
