5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is one of best, and least known, of the 20th Century
This CD is probably my all time favorite. It amazes me that it is not more popular than it is. This is a deeply reflective, meditative and sensitive work, that speaks to me as well about the ironies and subtleties of modern life. Good for sensitive poets, nature lovers, lover lovers, dancers. I suppose it depends what you're looking for.

The "inspiration" in these compositions seems to be a mantra-like repetitiveness, with very slow drawn-out development, and serendipitous improvisations coming and going.

So if you're looking for a trance-inducing envelope of sound, with a little tinkering here and there (with nothing too...

This CD is probably my all time favorite. It amazes me that it is not more popular than it is. This is a deeply reflective, meditative and sensitive work, that speaks to me as well about the ironies and subtleties of modern life. Good for sensitive poets, nature lovers, lover lovers, dancers. David Darling's exquisite ability to LISTEN makes this hold up after hundreds of listens. I have had the tape a long time; after I write this message I'm buying the CD so I can pipe this in to my office.

5.0 out of 5 stars Massaging the Soul, November 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: 8 String Religion (Audio CD)
I can't recommend this CD enough. There is something mysteriously healing about this work. There seems no separation between the man and his instrument as they envelope the listener in this intimate collaboration. They both resonate as one - the inner chords of a language that is absorbed through one's skin and pore and finally experienced at one's very core. At once universal and deeply personal this is a classic, a high water mark for this remarkable artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cello Music To Heal The Soul..., June 27, 2001
This review is from: 8 String Religion (Audio CD)
This cd should be selling off the shelves at a rapid pace. This is actually a reissue that was previously on HEARTS OF SPACE label. Music that will touch your soul and change your way of listening immediately. The key tracks are: #2, #3, #4, #9. Be sure to spread the word... David Darling is an amazing artist and hope that more of his work becomes famous...

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Religion, November 27, 1998

This CD has become my personal Bible. The Gospel According to Darling is a New Testament to the resurrection of the soul through the grace of an inner language spoken only when we resonate from our deepest spiritual place. Truely Heaven on Earth. Amen!

5.0 out of 5 stars d.d. always does it right, July 14, 2005
This review is from: 8 String Religion (Audio CD)
ive been listening to david darling since his early days on ecm, own all of his
things, but till now have been allergic to the 'new age' look of, say, his 'cello
blue' and that sort -and couldnt discern WHY hed 'break it up' that way- ecm to
new age- until i listened to the itemd i didnt have. the man can simply do no
wrong. i own pretty much everything (no joke) but invariably when people are
passing thru my apt, house, car, office and hear something from dd, they WANT
it- thats everyone from rockers to classicists.
be sure to check out the magnificent 'epigraphs'(ECM) with pianist ketil bjornstad.

5.0 out of 5 stars David Darling's amazingly soothing sounds., June 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: 8 String Religion (Audio CD)
I have most of Darling's cello recordings and this is by far my very best. Eight String Religion gets me out of my wordly concerns late at night and helps me put things in the right perspective. His haunting touches are so subtle and so special that the more I listen to them, the more I discover new subtle nuances. This is a lot more than the conventional cello music and definitely not a recording just for anybody. Hang your preconceived notions outside the door, come in and let yourself float away with David Darling's amazingly soothing sounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPREME BEAUTY, April 29, 2009
This review is from: 8 String Religion (Audio CD)
I love this album so much, I ration how often I allow myself to listen to it, so that its lustre, its creative sheen will never become something I get quite used to, or become too familiar with. I've had it for several years, and it never fails to wash over/into me an energy best described simply by the word HEALING. For a while I purchased a number of David Darling's c.d.'s hoping they would have the same magical effect as 8 String Religion, and while I felt all were very beautiful, they haven't. There is something unique and special about the totality of this c.d., a kind of phosphorescence that sets my heart and spirit aglow whenever I come into contact with this music: THANK YOU, David Darling for your EIGHT STRING RELIGION.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deeply moving masterpiece, January 15, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 8 String Religion (Audio CD)
There are no words adequate to describe the experience of listening to this CD, a deeply moving masterpiece of composition, instrumentation and expression, at times soaring to unexpected heights, at others quietly reaching contemplatively into the depths of one's heart and soul bringing great inner peace...it may bring tears to your eyes with its sheer beauty.

The "inspiration" in these compositions seems to be a mantra-like repetitiveness, with very slow drawn-out development, and serendipitous improvisations coming and going.

So if you're looking for a trance-inducing envelope of sound, with a little tinkering here and there (with nothing too challenging), then this is a nice CD.

If you're looking for engaging cello, go Yo-Yo, Rostapovich, Cassales, just to name a few. If you're looking for excellence in composition or improvisation, go just about anywhere else.
