4.0 out of 5 stars potential vampire killer
I have recently re-discovered the joy of target shooting. I usually shoot an air pistol in my improv 6 yards range also known as "the garage". I wanted to shoot outside (why be in a semi-dark garage on a beautiful summer day?) quitely; air pistols have a recognizible pop, and they look very much like a "real" gun these days. 3.0 out of 5 stars I was premature in my earlier review.
Yes the "China" arrows still suck. I've also discovered that the design of the bow is lacking. The string rubs too hard on the arrow guide. I waxed the string and the guide as advised but I only got about 3 dozen shots before the first string broke. The second string broke 2 strands after the first shot. I don't expect it to last as long as the first string. Between...

4.0 out of 5 stars potential vampire killer, September 9, 2005
This review is from: 80Lb Cobra Aluminum Crossbow (Misc.)
So I was looking for something that would draw less attention, at least noise-wise.
As soon as I got the package, (delivery was prompt, good service) I opened the box, and, to my initial disappointment, I saw marks on the metal parts, lots of fingerprints (under the plastic wrap), and the inscription on the bow read "hou shiueh". I was thinking : "This has poor workmanship written all over it, and I am sooo returning it". But then I went ahead and assembled the bow (not an easy task, requirred two people to bend the thing into shape). I went to the garage and shot. Whoaaaa. The backstop for my airgun consists of a boxfull of magazines, old telephone books and bubble wrap. No pellet has ever gone through. But the bolt/arrow did; punched a 1/2 inch hole into my garage door! So, some Elmer's Wood Filler later, and adjusting the sights, and reinforcing the backstop with 2 x 6 treated wood boards (left-overs from my deck repairs), here I am again: kaaapowww. The trigger is very hard to pull, do not expect any smooth action. It is HARD. Pulling it is very likely to affect your aiming.
I took the sights off, they are a piece of rubbish (cheap Chinese stuff) and mounted a BSA laser sight instead. Results improved immediately.
The Cobra is not just your crow/pigeon/squirrel shooter. It is way too powerful, and you need a very solid backstop.
It is not the most accurate plinking tool out there, but for its cost, with an additional laser / red-dot sight, it looks really mean.
I am giving it 4 out of 5 because it is a bit rattly and the sights are no good.
If you think about using it for hunting, check your local laws, some states do not allow crossbows and / or bows with scopes or lasers for wildlife hunting.
But then again, the Cobra might work just fine as a self-defense weapon against vampires.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Stealthy and Accurate Weapon, December 31, 2007

The Cobra pistol crossbow is lots of fun, but more than just a toy. It is quite powerful with the ability to penetrate deeply into targets, and accurate enough to consistently hit a 12-inch circle at 20-yards (after a bit of practice). The crossbow comes packaged with one bowstring and three bolts (darts). You'll want to be sure to purchase an extra pack of bolts or two since they are very inexpensive.

The crossbow has a built-in self-cocking mechanism, which makes cocking the crossbow for each shot easy, even with its 80-pound pull. Shooting across an open field to test the range of crossbow I found that I could shoot a bolt about 65-yards in fairly level flight. Shooting in a high arc the bolt will fly out to over 200-yards. Accuracy is quite good out to about 20 or 25-yards, and fair out to about 40-yards. (With more practice I suppose one might become very accurate even out to 40 or 50-yards.)

There is of course no recoil, and only a quiet click/snap sound as the bolt flies from the crossbow. This makes for a very stealthy weapon. The crossbow is certainly powerful and accurate enough to hunt small game, although the bolts only have a `target point'.

The crossbow is reasonably well constructed, made of solid aluminum. The sights leave a bit to be desired, as they are made of plastic, but they are still functional. There is an automatic safety that engages each time you cock the crossbow. This crossbow is well-worth its price of less than $40.00.

If you are looking for a fun weapon for target practice and maybe even a little small game hunting the Cobra pistol crossbow is a good choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars bullseye, April 29, 2004
This review is from: 80Lb Cobra Aluminum Crossbow (Misc.)
This is a very nice package. It is well suited to indoor shooting and will penetrate a typical phone directory to a depth of one inch at a range of @ 12 feet.
For a price of fifty dollars you won't be disappointed!
The self cocking ratchet is a simple lever designed as the short stock which adds a nice medieval look, and facilitates shooting from the hip.

4.0 out of 5 stars Realistic Review, April 3, 2008
This review is from: 80Lb Cobra Aluminum Crossbow (Misc.)
Well worth the money I spent.A few things to point out first. The string will break after heavy use or by chance. You will lose a lot of bolts.(Not only missing but by losing tips and backs)As for power and accuracy.I personally shot over 200+ bolts and three strings before writing this review.I'm a good shot with many weapons(Crossbows,Bows,Slingshots)

The sweetspot for this crossbow is inside 9 yards. After 15 yds you can see the bolt wobble in flight. You can shoot at 20+ yards,But loss of power in bolts. You have diminishing results after 20 yards.

As for fun,I love it.Very easy cock and load,Sights do work if you know how to use them.I adjusted mine for 10-15 yards and can hit six bolts in a 3 inch mark.

Bottom line:Loads of fun.Not really for hunting.Definitely not a toy.Buy a few dozen bolts and a string or two at the same time.
note:Need two people to put the string on.

Happy shooting!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best pistol crossbow you can owne, June 26, 2008
This review is from: 80Lb Cobra Aluminum Crossbow (Misc.)
I ordered this crossbow and was very skeptical, but when I got it in the mail I was extremely impressed. I have had several cross bows in the past and this is the best pistol crossbow I have ever owned. It is very powerful, accurate, and well made. I was expecting to get a toy but this crossbow is no joke you can do serious damage or even kill some one with this thing. So that's why I had to give this product five stars.

I gave this crossbow to my wife for christmas, she doesnt like firearms. I am an avid shooter and after looking up this bow online and seeing some good reviews i decided to buy it. Worst mistake ever. For one when i opened the package to put it together it felt well built and the aluminum frame felt sturdy. Big time WRONG! The bow was a pain in the a** to string, after i got it stringed with my bloody pinched finger, i tried to cock it, BAAM! Broken one of the hooks that cocks it, so i tried with the remaining one, didnt break but now doesnt cock, fixed that problem now i cant pull the trigger, fixed that problem. I ended up getting a bolt on the bow and fired it, there was a loud whack and i felt something graze my arm. The fiberglass bow splintered, now heres a fun fact, if fiberglass shards enter a part of your body the only way to remove those splinters is to open the injured area up and scrape it out, then you would think they could use an x-ray to find any remaining pieces? No, fiberglass doesnt show up on an x-ray. So while your opened up they have to dig around inside the wound to make sure there are no pieces left behind. Do yourself and your insurance company a favor, dont buy this bow, ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone should have one, March 21, 2009
This review is from: 80Lb Cobra Aluminum Crossbow (Misc.)
If you like target practice but don't want a gun, this is a great alternative. You can set up targets in the basement or garage. The crossbow is quiet with good power. Can even be used for home protection. I live in the inner city and target practice in the basement using bales of hay covered in cardboard. Have more fun by adding balloons, soda can, candles and whatever else you don't mind destroying. Boxes stuffed with thick styrofoam or old books will save your arrows. Storage bins will work too!

I ordered this as an early father's day gift, not really knowing what to expect. This crossbow is really nice for the price, and while it's hard to string and comes with crappy sights, it's perfect for backyard target shooting and varmint control.
