4.0 out of 5 stars GE Lamps 82143 50-Watt Reveal with Halogen Floodlight
Works fine. Actually brighter than the original bulb that came with a hood. Somewhat annoyed that I was only allowed to purchase one of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars I would have GLADLY given 5 stars but...
I like the light spectrum of Reveal bulbs. I really like them a LOT... but if you ask me, I think GE makes Reveal bulbs destined for shorter than average life span. Kind of like General Motors "planned obsolescence". In 4 years or so, the newer and oh-so-cooler model will attract you to buy a new car. GE is not the only maker of these bulbs. The bulb works fine. There is not buzzing. It is a light bulb for crist's sake.

Besides, after 4 years in most cases, GM vehicles were beginning to fall apart.

Because of my experience with Reveal standard screw-in Edison base bulbs, I have purchased two spares of the GU-10s (new fixture in bathroom), anticipating burn out in less than a year.

Fortunately, light bulbs cost a lot less than cars, so premature failure does not derail my life like vehicle failure would. Despite my suspicion that these GU-10 bulbs will fail before Labor Day (today is June 1st), I just really enjoy the spectrum of Reveal bulbs.

If I could, depending on how much longer GE holds legal rights to the Reveal light spectrum recipe, I would launch a direct competitor family of bulbs and draw attention to GE's deliberate (I believe) manufacture of "special bulbs" that have a short life span built right in so that you would have no choice but to buy another Reveal or have a mismatched set in your bathroom, kitchen, den or dining area. I'd love to pick that fight. Someone should have called GE out on this before now.

Oh, and with the GU-10 fixture, it is not nearly as easy to change bulbs as the standard screw-in type would be. You have to line the prongs up just right and when the bulb is positioned where the prongs actually enter the opening, the bulb itself is in the way, making it completely impossible to visually correct positioning of the prongs. I'm not sure why there was a need to invent that two prong approach because it doesn't really seem to save much space. I suppose it saves a bit of depth, but is, at least in my fixture's case, far more difficult to replace bulbs. This is a concern when the bulbs you use are GE's Reveal. I don't think GE invented the GU-10 fixture, but because of what I believe will be a significantly shorter than average life span, I will have to deal with those GU-10 fixture more often than I should have to.

I'll keep buying Reveal until a longer lasting equivalent is released by someone. GE's got me right where they want me I guess.

2.0 out of 5 stars Problematic Bulb and Fixture, February 15, 2009
This review is from: GE 82143 50-Watt Reveal with Halogen Floodlight GU10 1CD Light Bulb (Tools & Home Improvement)
Our home has several fixtures which use these bulbs. One bulb is really loud and buzzy. The recessed fixture in which it is installed made it very difficult to change. GE should go back to the drawing board and come up with something that is more user-friendly (how about a standard screw-in type bulb?). I can't recommend this proprietary approach.
