High Quality German Filters

From the Manufacturer

Protect Your Lens while Reducing UV Exposure

This UV Filter blocks the invisible Ultra Violet component of light from the sky, which can cause blur and to which many color films react with a blue cast. These filters should be called UV-Blocking Filters, because there are filters for technical applications that pass UV radiation and block all the other wavelengths. Nevertheless, the short term “UV Filter” has become established among photographers. UV Filters are ideal for photography in high altitudes (in the mountains), by the sea and in regions with very clean air. The pictures gain brilliance and disturbing blue casts are avoided. Because the glass is colorless, color rendition is not altered, aside from the elimination of the unwanted blue cast, and no increase in exposure is required. That makes a UV Filter very suitable as protection of the front element of the taking lens against dust, flying sand, sea water spray and the like, and it can be kept on the lens at all times. It is recommended for analog color and black-and-white as well as digital photography.

MRC - A Special Scratch-Resistant, Water and Dirt Repelling Coating

Filter with half MRC coating and half conventional coating.
The left half of this filter has a
traditional coating. The right half
has MRC coating.

The lens elements of high-quality lenses and the plano surfaces of filters require a perfect shape and smoothness to achieve the best optical quality. Dirt, greasy fingerprints, water marks and scratches reduce the image contrast and the sharpness, which can result in blooming at light sources and have an effect similar to a soft-focus lens. A clean front lens element and clean filter surfaces are therefore an absolute pre-requisite for demanding photographers.

MRC coating causes water to bead up and slide right off.
MRC coating causes the water
to bead up and slide right off.

The MRC coating is first and foremost a broadband anti-reflection coating. This means that its reflection-reducing effect, which is thus also a transmission-increasing effect, i.e. one which suppresses scattered light and ghost images and transmits more light, has a broadband action over the full spectrum. In contrast, the (almost always blue) single-layer coating only has a high effect in the medium wavelength range around yellow and yellow-green where the eye is most sensitive to light, while its effect is greatly reduced toward the blue-violet and purple-red end regions of the visible spectrum. With the MRC coating, this blue, violet and red to deep-red light cannot produce any contrast reducing scattered light, spotty reflections or ghost images. A broadband effect can only be achieved with a multilayer coating which requires a much higher effort and precision because unevenness and irregularities of the individual layers build up on one another and amplify one another. Schneider therefore uses a plasma-assisted evaporation coating process in which inert gas ions accelerated in an electrical field compact the material deposited on the lens surface in the vacuum chamber.

For photographers, the main advantage of MRC coating, is it's ability to combat flare and ghosting. An added benefit is that their filters remain free of dirt longer, so that they do not have to be cleaned so often. When cleaning the filter does become necessary, it is a lot easier to wipe off the dirt with a blower brush, because of MRC's ability to repel dirt and moisture. This also reduces the risk of micro-scratches which can occur during cleaning.

Slim Line Filter Mount

This filter uses our Slim-Line mount made of brass for wide angle lenses. They do not have a front accessory thread to avoid vignetting with lenses as wide as 17mm in 35mm format. Some photographers report success with lenses as wide as 16mm. A slip on cap is supplied.

This filter amazingly has a height of only 3mm.

When you buy anything, cost is relative.

It seens like a minor detail but the cap falls from the lens very easily, speacially during transportation.

Nice filter and the cap-though not as delicate as the filter-fits well so far.

I bought this filter to use on my Canon 16-35 L. As with any B&W product, the optics is superb. But the lens cap is really bad (you can't use the original Canon cap with the filter). It seens like a minor detail but the cap falls from the lens very easily, speacially during transportation. That can lead to a scratch in the filter or loss of it. When you pay $180 dollars for a filter, you expect it to be perfect.

Today, I received the filter from Amazon via UPS -- good packaging and no apparent damage -- just what I have come to expect from Amazon. When I went to open the cardboard box, I noticed that the manufacturer's seal had been broken, leading me to belive that the item had been used and returned (for whatever reason). I opened the plastic container housing the filter and noted streaks and dust on the surface of the filter.

If I had read the reviews closely, I would probably have chosen the same filter but without the Slim-Line feature. I wanted Slim-Line to prevent any possible vignetting from a thicker filter ring when using it on a wide-angle lens. It screwed onto the lens without a problem, but then I noticed that it has no threads on top (duh! Slim-Line) to accept another filter (circular polarizing filter or an Infra Red filter), or my pinch-type lens cap. In addition, the lens cap that is provided with the filter will not allow me to add or remove the lens hood without first removing the lens cap.

These might seem like negligible reasons for returning the filter, but for the price, I'd expect to have less annoying things to worry about... I'm returning it and ordering the "standard" B+W UV Haze Multi-Resistant Coating filter from Amazon at a much less expensive price.

It's a filter. It works like every other B+W filter. I got it for my 16-35. I guess they fixed the cap because I haven't had a problem with mine. The cap is snug, or at least, snug enough. No problems with flare or anything like that.

Not much to say about this filter. B+W makes the best filters hands down. They cost a pretty penny, but I'm not about to put a $15 filter in front of a $2,000 lens. Slim filters should be used on wide angle lenses to avoid vignetting around the edges. Only downside about slim filters is that lens caps do not work because the filter itself is too thin. This filter does come with an end cap to cover the filter. It's not great, but it does the job.

I have this filter on my Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8. Like every B+W filter, it feels high quality. The only thing is that because this is a low profile filter, you cannot use the regular canon lens cap. instead you have to use a flexible plastic slip on one it comes with. It works ok, but falls off if you brush against it and you must remove it to reverse or remove the lens hood. I wish they could find a way to let you use the stock canon cap, but otherwise, this is a great filter. I can't tell a difference between shots taken with and without it.

The filter is great but the slip on cap just doesn't work in the field or in my camera bag. It is always off the filter. Time for a new cap design that grips the filter.

Good product but so thin that the regular Canon cap won't hold on top of the filter. The B+W cap provided with the filter doesn't stick in place and is falling constantly

I use this high-quality (expensive) filter on a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L lens. Everything is great except the annoyance of (1) the Canon factory lens cap will not work since this filter is so thin (needed to avoid vignetting), and (2) the cap that comes with this filter does not stay on the filter. Some may whine that these are complaints about the cap and not the filter... true... however I am now spending time figuring out how to protect my investment in this filter since the cap that comes with it is inferior. If anyone has found a solution to this specific filter I would appreciate learning what worked for you.

USE THIS LENS CAP, IT STAYS ON: Kaiser 206985 85MM Slip-On Lens Cap
