So, I've been doing this type of work for 35+ years. The last 30 years I've been using my trusty old Ungar 9100 soldering station. I have built well over 3,000 boards using that old workstation and it was still going strong. However my last soldering tip finally wore out and it's just not possible to find new tips for it. So with a lot of regret, I set the old soldering station aside and began my search for a new one.

After searching for several days (yes I really am *that* picky!), I found this 852D+ station. It has hot-air, and a soldering pencil as well, comes with multiple tips, and air-flow nozzles, and it has real-temperature displays of both the out-going air temp, and the actual temperature of the solder pencil.. all with a great price.

When this 852D+ station arrived I set it up and started some re-work on one of my latest projects. I selected the appropriate tip, powered it up and began removing/replacing a few 0603 SMD resistors on one of my boards. I was a bit concerned that it would work as well as my trusty old Ungar.... and WOW, I was quite surprised at how much BETTER this 852D+ works! It was extremely easy to place the right amount of heat exactly where I needed it. The temperature control is very accurate.

While I also have a proper reflow oven I use for small-scale production, I tried the hot-air from this 852D+ and was easily able to reflow small, and even individual components on the board. This made it very easy to rework the boards, which during prototyping and initial proto bring-up is an extremely handy thing!

Overall, I would very much recommend this unit to anyone who does serious SMD rework or prototyping!

Get it. It works very well. Can't believe this value. Don't forget to read the instructions regarding the red shipping screws in the bottom.

I love my new burning machine, and all the ways I can seriously burn myself while playing with it. It's like every knob and button just makes something get really freaking hot and I think that's awesome. I'm going to find someone or something to burn right now...

Basically working soldering station. However, the temperature control doesn't work completely. The temperature for the hot air always shows 500 (maximum).
