Product Description

Retaining the impressive optical performance and large aperture of the original EF 85mm f/1.2L USM, this new medium telephoto lens uses a Ring-type USM, high-speed CPU and optimized algorithms to achieve an autofocus speed approximately 1.8x faster than the original. The high-speed AF and circular aperture create a shallow depth-of-field that brings attention to the subject and blurs the background, which is ideal for portraits and weddings. The floating optical system, which includes an aspherical lens element, suppresses aberrations and ensures excellent imaging performance. 3.0 out of 5 stars Great portrait lens, slow focusing for action phography...., November 1, 2011
This review is from: EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Medium Telephoto Lens (Electronics)
I recently sold this lens as I found the auto focus speed did not meet the standard typical of Canon L series lenses. I photograph a lot of gymnastics and while this lens can produce awesome images, it has difficulty tracking and focusing contributing to some minor out of focus results. The lens is awesome for portraits and stills, but I would not recommend this lens for low light, action photography like gymnastics. If that is your need, the Canon 85mm f/1.8 is a better choice. However, I heavily favor the Canon 135mm f/2 as the best lens ever for gymnastics photography (If you can get close enough!

I shoot with a 40D - not a professional grade camera. The 85mm f/1.2 is a great portrait lens, but not the best for indoor, low light, action photography.

1.0 out of 5 stars What has happened with Amazon pricing????, May 9, 2011

Unless I'm crazy, and I suppose I could be, the retail price on this lens direct from Canon is $2,199.00. Why would Amazon be charging $3,199.00???

I put the lens in my cart, just to make sure, and indeed I could have purchased the lens at $1,000 over retail. I would not be writing this, except that I already called Amazon to report this pricing problem more than two months ago. No changes have ever been made.

I have been a loyal Amazon customer for years, but I am finding this kind of pricing error, especially through third parties, more and more common.

Before you purchase anything, be sure to check with the manufacturer for their "retail" price before you click "buy".
