3.0 out of 5 stars Very good but could have been better
I purchased this flashlight to go with the 14.4V Porter Cable drill I purchased a month ago. I appreciate the flashlights bright light, nice ergonomics, spare bulb, solid construction, good looks and of course, the main reason I got it, compatibility with my drills charger/battery. I would have liked it more if the beam was adjustable (like Maglights are), and if it had...

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally - a flashlight my husband can't destroy, June 7, 2000
This review is from: Porter Cable 879 14.4-Volt Tilting Head Flashlight, No Battery (Tools & Home Improvement)
We have the PC cordless drill that uses the same battery as this flashlight and they make a wonderful pair of tools. The flashlight has a steady base so you can set it on the floor and you can swivel the head around, as needed.

The light is nice and bright - and despite the fact that we have done some awful things to this light - it lives on.

Hubby uses it in his appliance repair business where it gets dropped, kicked, (and sometimes dropped kicked) stomped, tossed into the tool box from too great a distance and he drops things on it about 4 times a day. At home, redoing our old house, we've abused it similarly.

The light bulb has never burned out and I love that fact that it has a rechargeable battery. (At least *I'm* not destroying the water quality with mercury from discarded batteries...anymore. :)

Sorry this isn't a more technical review - but in summation - this is a great product. Strong, sturdy, useful and with many handy applications - I'd recommended it (and have) to everyone. Whether you're the little old lady who uses a flashlight once a year when the lights go out (hi Mom!) or someone like hubby and me who use it several hours each day - it's a great tool.

I purchased this flashlight to go with the 14.4V Porter Cable drill I purchased a month ago. I appreciate the flashlights bright light, nice ergonomics, spare bulb, solid construction, good looks and of course, the main reason I got it, compatibility with my drills charger/battery. I would have liked it more if the beam was adjustable (like Maglights are), and if it had an intermediate switch that allowed for quickly flashing the light on/off without having to fully click it on then click it off. If you already have a 14.4V charger and battery then this flashlight is worth getting; but it could have been designed a little better.

If, like me, you purchased a Porter-Cable Cordless 14.4v Drill/Driver and are looking to add the convenient flashlight, take note: not all Porter-Cable 14.4v D&D's are alike. My drill, purchased just a couple of years ago, uses batteries with a protuding stem, Battery Pack #8720. This light uses a battery pack with a nearly flush top (#8723). Learn from my mistake and save the frustration (and return shipping cost).

I received this as a gift and really like it. It has a good base when the battery is installed and rotates to shine in any direction. I would highly reccomend this light if you need a flashlight and have a porter cable 14.4 drill.

The rubber switch cover tore after a year, and the lens bezel threads wore quickly with the repeated bulb changes. The light is bright and long lasting.

I bought this on a whim. Thought I could use it in tight places and under tables on which I do wiring for a model railroad. This lamp is far superior to the ones I had been using. You can direct the light, it stays steady on the floor and no cord to drag along. Wish I had purchased it years ago.

Like others have mentioned, it's handy to have a flashlight that stands up on its own and has an adjustable directional beam. I bought it to also allow me to drain my NiCad battery packs between uses and to make additional use of my cordless drill batteries. It's pricey for a flashlight, that's my only reason for not giving it 5 stars.

11/2010 update: Still works, also works with 9v Porter Cable drill battery, a little dimmer and doesn't fill up the entire base, but fits securely.

I cant say enough about this flashlight. Its simple, the head swivels up and down, and it has an off on switch. With the battery installed, it is very stable too. I wont go on and on, but if you have an extra battery, this is where you should be keeping it, on the bottom of this awesome flashlight!

I love this flashlight. I am an electrician so I use a flashlight quite often. As I already own a Porter Cable 14.4 volt drill, the convinience of having a battery at the ready for the flashlight is awesome. My favorite feature on the flashlight is the swivle head. I can put the light down and aim it at the target easily and not have to use an extra hand to hold the light. Usually lasts about 2 hours on a fully charged battery.

This thing comes in handy. Powerful, light-weight, and stands and pivots the beam to where you need it. Seems pretty easy on the battery power as well...one charge lasts quite a while.
