Best Keyboard I've owned., February 1, 2010
This review is from: 88KEY USB Wrls Touchpad Keyboard Black with LCD (Electronics)
I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase. I use my computer (Laptop) at home mainly from an armchair. It is connected to a wide-screen monitor, to which I have custom attached to a camera tripod. I wanted a keyboard with a touch-pad,so I wouldn't have to hassle with a mouse in limited space. This keyboard entirely suits my needs and although a little pricey, seems to be very well made. I can't foresee any reason to have to replace it for a long time.

NO LCD SCREEN AS DESCRIBED AND MUCH BIGGER THAN STATED, June 30, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: 88KEY USB Wrls Touchpad Keyboard Black with LCD (Electronics)
This keyboard would have been great if it was what was described. They have this catalogue item wrong. It says it has an LCD screen. Do you see one in the picture? Says it is good for tight spaces, but is the same size as a regular keyboard. To make it worse the mouse did not work and it was the cheapest feeling thing I have ever handled. Big, plasticky and hollow. I might have kept it had it worked just because I do not usually return things but it was useless with the mouse not working. The hollow sound was rather annoying when typing.

Adesso WKB-4200UB
88KEY USB Wrls Touchpad Keyboard Black with LCD
Based upon having the keyboard less than a day but with lots of use...
Pros
o Operation is reliable (no dropped keystrokes; touchpad & buttons work). Key touch is good, but the layout takes some practice (like most laptops). Key labeling is legible (white on black).
o Range is good. I ran out of testing space at 25+ feet with the receiver mounted on a front USB port.
o Built-in touchpad.
o Has media keys (right side of keyboard) and common activity keys (scroll, browser navigation, email, Windows Explorer on left side of keyboard). The Logitech diNovo Edge is almost twice the cost of the WKB-4200UB and does not have media keys.
o OK size for HTPC. Dimensions (16.5" x 8") are not too large, but permit keys to be a decent size. Note that the specs (11.75" x 6") on the Adesso website (and, consequently, Amazon) are incorrect. If you want something smaller you might consider the Logitech DiNovo Mini but the user reviews scared me away and it's more expensive than the WKB-4200UB.
o No special drivers are necessary. (My testing was done on XP 32-bit.)
o Has foldable rear legs.
o Customer support was easy to reach and the first suggestion solved the problem (touchpad initially did not work).
o Uses AA batteries.
Cons
o The touchpad and the two "mouse" buttons initially did not work (no response from computer and receiver did not blink). Solution: uninstall/reinstall batteries. So far (less than 24 hours, but lots of use) the problem has not recurred.
o The ON/OFF switch is too small and is unnecessarily difficult to operate (just like the Logitech diNovo Edge). Also, it is unnecessarily difficult to know which position is ON -- the engraved label is small and difficult to read (black on black in a dimly lit room) and located on an edge which bevels inward toward the bottom of the keyboard. I made a P-Touch label.
o No LED or other lighting to let you know that it's on, probably to increase battery life and reduce cost. (The Logitech DiNovo Edge has some lighting, a rechargeable battery, and a charging cradle, so (1) it's more obvious when it hasn't been switched off and (2) the battery drain is less of a concern if you get into the habit of leaving it on the charging cradle.)
Other Info
o Any time you press a key, the receiver should blink.
o If you're considering high-volume keyboard use, be aware of the unusual location of Insert, Delete, etc. (like a laptop) and the lack of right Ctrl key (could solve by remapping the Context key using AutoHotKey or similar).
o As far as I know, the USB receiver only works with this keyboard. There's no indication that it supports Bluetooth or other Adesso devices or devices from other manufacturers -- so if this is a consideration you might want to contact Adesso (Tech Support: 800-795-6788). (Logitech offers a collection of products (keyboards, mice, numeric keypads) which can share a single receiver.)
o As of 3/12/2010 the user manual was not available for download from [...]. It's basically one page of clear, well-written instructions.
o I haven't had it long enough to assess battery life.
Conclusion
o I would buy this keyboard again and would recommend it for HTPC use.
o My diNovo Edge, which is also a good keyboard, has been demoted to a less-frequently-used computer and this Adesso takes over for use with my HTPC -- primarily because of the media keys.
o I used AutoHotKey (free) to get the Adesso to play nicely with XBMC Media Center. (XBMC doesn't recognize the standard Windows commands for media. Other media players such as the Windows Media Player probably require no customization.) ...
