Excellent remastering of classic soundtrack, April 23, 2009
This review is from: 9 to 5 (Audio CD)
Another reviewer gave this CD a low rating because they were apparently reviewing their (bizarre, unreasonable) expectations, not the CD itself.
This is a fantastic CD. It is identical to the soundtrack that was issued on LP back in 1980, but it has been digitally remastered for a nice, clean sound. Several years ago I transferred my LP to CD so I could play it on my iPod, and this new CD release sounds better than my own transfer -- something that you don't always get because of deterioration of the master tapes over decades.
Charles Fox's score is playful and fun. Each of the characters' "fantasies" is in a different style -- Judy's is film noir, Violet's is fairy tale, and Dora Lee's the country-western. The scoring for some of the other scenes creates an appropriate atmosphere for the scene -- funny yet urgent when Violet steals a body at the hospital, somber at the Ajax Warehouse, foreboding when Judy senses an intruder at Mr. Hart's house.
Fans of film soundtracks should snap this one up, as it is a limited-edition release and won't be around for long. If you're a Dolly Parton fan, you'll want this because the closing credits version of the theme song ("9 to 5") is different from her album version.

Masterful, July 7, 2009
This review is from: 9 to 5 (Audio CD)
showed the movie recently to a group of college kids-- still funny and biting and the score is great too. Colin Higgins was a master of these kind of films and the composer and he were in total sync here and in "Foul Play" as well-- which is also a fantastic score that they should release on CD. Both scores play that thin line between comedy and suspense-- but Foul Play has a whole romantic theme too that the composer wrote with Barry Manilow. The music in the fantasy scenes are superb and inspired-- even my class of 19 year olds-- who barely heard of any of those actresses-- were entertained and impressed. Great CD to relive it. Hopefully put out FOUL PLAY and SILVER STREAK on CD too!

Sadly disappointed, April 30, 2009
This review is from: 9 to 5 (Audio CD)
As 9 to 5 is on my top 5 list of best comedies, I was thrilled to see the "soundtrack" was being released to CD. Unfortunately, with the exception of Dolly's title tracks. All other tracks are rerecorded tracks NOT the actual performances you hear in the movie. The orchestra, although fairly good in general(and conducted by the composer, Charles Fox-- who did not conduct the cuts for the film), do not have the bite and soul that the original orchestra of the orchestra in Germany that recorded the score that we hear in the film. And, in a few places just seem sloppy-- for instances in tempo changes in several tracks (ex. "Violet Steals Body", "Hart Tries To Escape") the harsichord player and horns dont quite agree on the tempo right away; in the track "Ajax Warehouse" around 1:20 the trumpets and horns are hideously out of tune somewhat akin to a 6th grade band-seriously.This CD is not horrible by any means-- just not as stellar as the original tracks from the movie. It sort of sounds as Mr. Fox was only allowed one shot at each track, and was probably given the the 10th call round of musicians. Perhaps, as I am a professional musician, my expectations were too high, but as a 9 to 5 fan, I long for the original tracks. perhaps one day , it will be available-- until then we will have to suffice with this.
