5.0 out of 5 stars Best Costes Since Etage 3
It's less disco-y and more Parisian lounge/jazz. I found every track instantly likeable. Can't say the same about Costes 7 or 8.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent
The Ballad of Sacco puts me off and I always start my listen with Track 2. Unfortunately that seems to be a recurring theme through the album. Don't get me wrong, there are moments of sheer brilliance - take track 4 for instance.
But in my opinion, Stephane is capable of smoother mixing as evidence by Costes Quatre.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best Costes CD since #6, March 24, 2007
This review is from: Vol. 9-Hotel Costes (Audio CD)
With this mix Pompougnac goes back to the roots and re-introduces a richer Paris lounge flair, abandoning the more disco-hipster types of rhythms and themes. This may be in response to an exploding market of global lounge music from the frequent flyer series to the destination lounge sets. The album reestablishes Pompougnac as one of the original godfathers of lounge, his picks and his mixing are unique and impeccable. A great album.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better ones, January 11, 2007
This review is from: Vol. 9-Hotel Costes (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of the Hotel Costes series since I heard Vol 3. I now have them all. Some are definitely better than others and some (like vol 8) are not really worth listening to.

This one is quite good. It definitely takes about 3 listens before it grows on you. When it does, you will listen for a long time. Check out track 7, it's amazing. Then pay attention to 2, 8 & 11.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hotel Costes, Vol. 9, Stephane Pompougnac, January 3, 2007

Of the Hotel Costes series, No. 9 is the most seductive potion. Unlike most mixes, this CD blends beautifully from one great sound to the next, never missing a beat or flow in timbre or mood. A terrific collection. I am a huge fan of Stephane Pompougnac.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much Variety, November 30, 2006
By
This review is from: Vol. 9-Hotel Costes (Audio CD)
I enjoyed volume 9 more than the others but still experienced the problem of too much variety. While just about all vocal lounge music, the styles vary heavily including tango, tropical lounge, 40's sounding, and afro lounge. This left me loving a hand full of tracks and absolutely hating others.
Top tracks
3 All I want - acoustic track with a touch of soul.
6 Diferente - Tango at its best
7 Con Mi Sombra - Catchy Tropical/Spanish lounge

The Bad
9 You Ain't Really Down - features a intro base loop for two minutes
12 Blue bird - awful afro lounge, where she actually raps!

5.0 out of 5 stars Number 9- the best of the lot!, October 15, 2006

Being a Costes fan for four years and having collected the lot, I was rather apprehensive about the new installation after having read the reviews on this site. Nothing comes close to #4 and #5- or so I thought. #9 is everything that Costes should be. It starts in a rather nondescript fashion then luanches you into the tango lounges of Argentina, along the streets of london and into the clubs of Paris. Track 4 ("one")is almost ethereal in its repeated avalanche of beat. Here and there a hint of tango, rap, deep house and the sound that you are loitering in a moulin rouge green room.
Well done SP...money well spent and after the misery of Sept, I can firmly confirm that Costes is still one of the hottest compilations on the market anywhere.

Just received my Hotel Costes 9 yesterday, and this one is gorgeous. The tracks are way cool, great chill. I especially liked the remake of the Stones "Emotional Rescue." I have many of the Hotel Costes discs, and my favorites are #1, #2, #5,#6 and #9. This isn't just an average compilation, but a grand statement of style. This one has a very European flavor. I loved it.

I have all the Costes series, so I guess I'm in a position to compare. I was quite disappointed with vols 6 & 7, so nearly didn't bother with vol 8, but in the end was glad I did. Vol 9 shows that the series is now securely back on track and I agree with a previous reviewer that this is almost on par with Etage 3. Definately worth a listen if you have enjoyed this series of albums at all.

At first listen, I thought it was just okay. After repeated listenings, wow, this really reminds me of Paris. Nice selection, can't pick a favourite as all the songs are good.

After a not quite convincing Hotel Costes #8, I feel that this new addition to the Costes series is really quite good, and back in the sort of style that the earlier editions had! I'm enjoying it a lot!
