Product Description

If you've got older computer equipment and no cable to connect it, we've got the solution. This adapter set converts RS232 9-pin and 25-pin serial ports (DB9 & DB25) for connection to a USB port. The USB end eliminates tricky serial connection setup.

This item comes with absolutely no instructions for installation. The enclosed CD contained drivers to many products and was equally useless. I only found the correct driver after I called a company whose README file was on the CD who no doubt had many calls from others about the same product. The company had no affiliation with the actual product but they were kind enough to help me identify the item and I was then able to install a driver.

The unit does work properly now that the correct driver is installed but I don't envy the mere mortal that purchases this device. It is ridiculous that there are no instructions. So in an effort to help anyone that has purchased this device (or plans to purchase it) here are the instructions to install the driver.

When the unit is plugged in identifies itself as USB SER! The unit has a barely legible HL-340 molded on the side of the DB9 connector. HL-340 is the part number and with that you can find the driver installation executable (HL-340.exe) for the device under the folder USB-232 on the USB driver mini CD that comes with the device.

Don't expect to tell Windows to search the CD for the device driver - it won't find it because the driver installation is an .exe file that you need to run manually first. Simply run USB-232\HL-340\HL-340.exe first and then plug the device in.

After connecting the device, Windows will prompt you to install the driver. Follow the usual Windows prompts to install the driver software automatically (since the driver software was already installed on the system in the previous step). The driver identifies itself as USB Serial CH340 to add further confusion.

You will get warnings about the driver not having passed Windows Logo testing.

DO NOT BUY THIS !

Doesn't work! Comes with no useable driver and no instructions. Windows XP, Visio, or Windows 7 can't detect or find a driver, neither on the included disc, nor in registered windows drivers. There's no useable driver on the disc that comes with the product. What does come on the disc, is a hodge-podge of chinese programs for unrelated products, with no auto-install files that work on anything greater than Windows 2000. Amazon should remove this product from its Marketplace listing. It is unusable. Am returning mine and working thru Amazon to make the seller pay the return postage.

after spending 1.5 days on this product, I have concluded that it does not work. I used the driver that came with the cd and installed fine. but no communication came through the cable. I tried different COM settings to slower transfer rate, faster rate, matching rate, disabling buffer, enabling buffer, downloaded numerous drivers to install, uninstall, and re-install. package says it supports windows up to xp, so I installed a virtual machine with xp running in my windows 7, still did not link up my pc software to my serial device. The test program that came with the cd never said the cable worked and always gave me the "NG" i am assuming "no good". Just in case the program was not working properly, I used Hyperterminal from win XP and did a backloop of the adapter on pin 2 and 3 to see if the cable would send and receive; it did not work. nothing sends or receives. I finally gave up.

After emailing the seller, they promptly offered to refund the sale without return due to cost of the item. Kudos to the seller for fast response to resolve issue on faulty item.

We'll never know if this works ... well it doesn't work without the driver ... not for me anyway ... and there is a mini cd which is hidden between the front and back cardboards in the hard plastic packaging ... I only noticed it's existence by accident ... it was completely broken thru on one side so it couldn't be used anyway ... I gave up and threw it all in the trash.

The description and photo of this item is totally misleading.
1. No Driver is included even though it says w/driver in the header.
2. There is no 9 pin to 25 pin adapter even though the photo shows one.
3. Has 340 molded on it like most HL-340 adapters however it does not work with HL-340 driver. Nor any other standard drivers found by Windows.

After playing with it for about 15 minutes it went straight into a trash can. I am using this kind of equipment at work but this was a huge mistake. I could not get it to work with Windows 7. There were instructions on a CD that came with it but it was written in a such horrible English that I could not make any sense out of that. Manufacturer's website is in Chinese so it did not help. I've used many different USB-to-Serial adapters in the past several years and never encountered anything like this. Please think again before wasting your money. Get a beer instead if you feel like you need to spend $4.

I should have done my research before buying this because it was cheap. It is not compatible with Vista and 7 for the application that I want to use it for and it connects whenever it feels like it wants to. Drivers are terrible and the construction seems very cheap and sloppy.
