4.0 out of 5 stars Pilgrimage: A journey of the soul and mind
This is a monumental CD offering from 'Pilgrimage' called 9 Songs of Ecstasy. There is not one song that is not good. This is a new age song fest that is both ambient and haunting at the same time. This CD is best suited for listeners who are at home relaxing. Try this - close your eyes at the start of track 1 and relax and let the soothing rhythms take your soul and mind...

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Muzak
It is all so gorgeous and Philip Glass was the executive producer. So why just 3 stars? Because this kind of stuff can make your mind turn to mush. It lacks creativity, but so do mashed potatoes. Listen and be comforted, just don't get too fat.

This is a monumental CD offering from 'Pilgrimage' called 9 Songs of Ecstasy. There is not one song that is not good. This is a new age song fest that is both ambient and haunting at the same time. This CD is best suited for listeners who are at home relaxing. Try this - close your eyes at the start of track 1 and relax and let the soothing rhythms take your soul and mind on a journal into a dreamscape of your own sub-conscious. The female vocalist who sings a romano-celtic tongue has a voice that is angelic.
This album is a one only release from this artist but what a wonderful release. This is chant for those who want to relax and let their minds wonder in the playground of this rich and character driven music beat. The coverwork of this album is also a work of art and adds to the flavour of the overall album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Affects your spatial and temporal awareness!, April 10, 2001

Waves of spiritual delights combined with rhythms of sensuality. A unique and hard to find blend of hip-hop rhythms with ethereal sounds... Pilgrimage CAN affect your spatial and temporal awareness by transporting your mind to another time and place. Do you like Dead Can Dance? Then you will definitely enjoy Pilgrimage. In its own musical style it also profound, out-there and absolutely fabulous in its dreamlike and sensuous effect.

4.0 out of 5 stars the blend of chant & trip-hop works well on this cd!, February 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: 9 Songs of Ecstasy (Audio CD)
This album has some of the best female choir sample's I've heard yet - the way they blend with the trip-hop and acid jazz rhythms really worked nicely, and as a whole the album flows well. Obvious comparissons will be made to Enigma no doubt, but Pilgrimage really has a distinctive and polished sound compared to some others who dare to attempt the "enigma-sound"! If you especially like the soprano voices mixed with the ambient rhythms, you may also want to check out an artist called ARIA (aka Paul Shwartz - Aria is more operatic though) and also Richard Souther's album "Illumination" (which sounds quite similar to this).

An ethereal masterpiece. Without a doubt, my all-time favorite album (and my musical tastes range from Rock through classical). Why oh why was there never a follow-up?

5.0 out of 5 stars Just simply awesome..., May 9, 2005
This review is from: 9 Songs of Ecstasy (Audio CD)
I am an avid listener of trippy music, and this definitely hits the bag. I could describe it as flowing operatic semi-classical female vocals over electronic beats and ambient samples, quite like trip hop, but more. The piano is minimal but very effective when played I must say. The melodies are just flowing and very ethereal, quite surreal and melanchonic at the same time, quite timeless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rare Find: Hard to Classify Classic, January 11, 2001

Chant doesn't thrill me and trip hop is best at the clubs (in my book) but composers Simon Cloquet and Eric Calvi have worked magic with some pretty well known artists like Phil Manzanera, DJ Spooky and Ben Neill. They create arresting percussive instrumentals offsetting some classic, and richly melodic vocal melodies. I've been listening to this album since it was released in 1997 and have never grown tired of it. Despite my continued attempt to find a similar sound, I've never heard anything that lives up to the spare, intelligent mix Pilgrimage created. As many of the tracks take a little while to rev up, the samples from the album on this site do not do the album justice. Final note: Philip Glass is listed as one of the executive producers and the recording was, in part, done in New York at Looking Glass Studios.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond imagination, August 13, 1999

I absolutely love this cd. The rhythms, melodic nuances, sound effects and mystic overtones blend perfectly with each song. Excellent love-making music. I have had this cd since 1997 and still listen to it several times each month, never tireing of it and finding something new and different each time I hear it.

I've owned this album for 4 years, and it's simply fabulous. I love the vocals and the backing music, and it provides a good backdrop for a slow, rainy day. I enjoy listening to it because of the Gaelic feel to the lyrics (I'm not positive on the exact language, but I'm sure it's a Celtic-based language), and also because of the simple, flowing melodies that accompany the vocals. It's a well-thought-out production, but I wouldn't exactly call it "acid" or "trippy," as much as I would just "New Age."

5.0 out of 5 stars Must...have...more...PILGRIMAGE!, March 17, 2000
This review is from: 9 Songs of Ecstasy (Audio CD)
This album has to be one of my all-time favorites, right up there with Adiemus and Deep Forest's first album. The combination of laid back grooves and the etherial vocals give this album a permanent spot in my all-nighter stack. And the first cut is definitely a great test for your subwoofer- if you're playing it on teensy speakers without a sub, you're missing the best part. I just hope they're going to do more!
