Awesome Primer - Great Book., February 13, 2006
This review is from: 90% Of Helping Is Just Showing Up (Paperback)
Unsure what to say when someone is suffering, how to be like Jesus to those who are hurting, or just get really, really uncomfortable when others are walking through the wilderness of life's problems? Pick up this book and you'll be quickly on your way to serving others effectively and confidently.
This book was my favorite read in seminary. It does not get bogged down in detailed analysis of how to help people. With great examples - it sticks to the basics and encourages ANYONE that they CAN be a powerful people helper.
Admittedly it is a very quick read - about an hour & a half or so. But that is a bit of its power. It sticks-to-the-point and highlights the fundamentals so often overlooked in everyday situations.
If you do the questions at the end of each short chapter it will take a bit longer but you will be further encouraged and educated. Dr. Kok raises great questions, biblical reflection, and self-analysis in these sections. This book would be great in facilitating discussion on caring for others for any small group.
I now assign this book as required reading in the Pastoral Care classes that I teach at Pacific Rim Bible College here in Honolulu. It is a good book on the fundamentals of pastoral care - encouraging each student they CAN make a difference. NOW!
If you've ever wanted to help others - family, friends, or your "neighbor" - but weren't sure how - grab a copy of this book and get started! It will help put you on the right page for helping people in their times of need.

A wonderfully helpful book, November 19, 2010
This review is from: 90% Of Helping Is Just Showing Up (Paperback)
I used this book to guide a Sunday school class we called "How to Be a Caring Person." Because all of us have opportunities to comfort people who suffer, the insights Jim Kok offers in this book will be useful for every Christian believer.
