Wonderful Beginning Quilting Book,
By
This review is from: 90-Minute Quilts: 15+ Projects You Can Stitch in an Afternoon (Spiral-bound)
Meryl Ann Butler uses every trick in the book to complete a beautiful quilt in the least amount of time. While an intermediate quilter could probably complete a project in an afternoon, a beginner could easily complete a quilt before they got bored or frustrated.
I lurve this book because it shows that a simple pattern can product a lovely result. It certainly will be my go-to book for baby quilts. Projects include pillow covers, baby quilts, lap quilts and wall hangings. All of them are made from squares. The majority of projects are small enough that you don't have to worry about piecing together a backing. Great addition to my quilting library.

This is a great quilt book for beginners or seasoned quilters! Lots of great ideas and fun book with a spiral binding allowing the book to lie flat when open. The 6 inch squares are great for adding your machine embroidery. Making it as fancy as you like with lace, velvet, or cotton. It can be made with simple squares or embelish, embelish, emblish. Lots of fun. Trish in AZ

I just got this book today!!!!!! I thumbed through it and was fascinated. I cannot wait to do a quilt with my daughter and with our Girl Scout troop, also. I told my co-leader about the book, and she is excited too. This book is going to be a great resource for our troop, I know our girls are going to love learning to quilt! I am impressed that Ms. Butler included information on tools and notions, the color wheel and coordinating fabrics, and even how to iron the fabric! The illustrations and instructions on how to make the quilts are wonderful and include very detailed lay out and sewing plans to give confidence to novices like me. There are even tons of pages on quilting projects that tell you what fabrics, etc to buy and explains how to finish a quilt with pride. Our Girl Scout troop is definitely going to make the tote bag and a small quilt for their dolls with this book as a guide.

I would have rated this one more, but felt that there were certain types of projects missing in this book. I don't know for sure if I could do all these in 90-minutes or not, but they are simple and easy quilts you can at least do in a day (if you have a day!) Don't look in here for special 9-patch quilts or anything fancy. You won't find that in this book. However, there are some cute quilts from doll quilts, wall hanging type quilts to real bed quilts that someone can make. I think you could even use some scrap fabrics for some of the ideas in this book. There's even a Tic-Tac-Toe board and Checker Board Quilt patterns! I love the open binding where you can lay it flat to look at. I hope more quilting books will be like this one.

Every woman needs a little black dress, and every quilter needs a little quilt book! This book fits nicely into my hand, it's VERY colorful, bound nicely, and has great quick projects. Beginners will love it, and it will be great for the guilds that do charity quilts, too. I loved the photos of the more complex garments in the front--it's obvious this author does many kinds of quilting projects, from quick and easy to intricate and methodical. I'm buying one for my 12-year old niece, my son's (girl) friend going to Iraq who wants to do something useful in her spare time over there, and plan to suggest a few patterns to my guild for community service projects!!

Great gifts for friends, old and new quilters!,

I purchased 3 copies of the 90 Minute Quilts book by Meryl Ann Butler to give 2 away as gifts. One went to a friend that I am just teaching to quilt, she is a beginner and one went to a friend that taught me to quilt, she is an advanced quilter. I kept the 3rd one for myself because I am an intermediate quilter so the book is great for the beginner to the advanced quilter. I love that it is spiral bound so it will be able to stand the wear and tear of being used a lot because all 3 books will be used a lot for quilt projects and who of us don't always need quick quilts to give as gifts. The instructions and graphics are easy to understand. This book is truly a great gift for a fellow quilter, novice or advanced or great to add to your own collect.

What a brilliant book! The cover is enticing and the photos of the quilts are just gorgeous. One look through this book and I knew that even a complete novice like me could create a beautiful masterpiece with these simple techniques! And, just in time for the birth of my first grandchild. I am so excited! Thank you for a great book!

There are times when I really love this book and other times when I think, "Oh, that is too bad."
First, the reason why they called it 90 minute quilts is because there are little (four block) wall hangings and doll quilts in here. If you are looking to really better understand chain piecing you need a different book. I do not think anyone can match Eleanor Burns when it comes to time saving tips. I may have been a little spoiled from her books. Second, I don't care for the way binding is addressed in the book. Two ways are taught and for me they leave out the best method. Folding over the backing fabric to do a self binding will not hold up as well as a double fold binding and quilts used by kids get dragged a lot. Bias binding is not necessary unless you are doing a scalloped edge. A straight cut of fabric will work just fine to make a double fold binding for a straight quilt. Too bad they left that one out. Third, it doesn't explain how not to get the thread nest on the back of your machine quilting when you first start stitching and I think that is so important in getting a nice finished product. Hold your bobbin thread or stitch on a scrap piece of fabric first and do not cut the threads, just leave it dangling and start your stitching. Otherwise you have a nest of bobbin thread messing up your backing. Also back stitching is not the preferred method of machine quilters, they stitch a couple tiny stitches at the start and stop of each time they quilt. Back stitching is not as neat looking on a finished product. Fourth, I didn't like the quality of the bag/pouch projects in the book as they have raw edges exposed. It doesn't take that much more time to use pinking shears/serge or make a lined bag. Please do not use a fabric that ravels easily. We are skimping on the quality of the finished project and failing to teach good sewing construction. Fifth, Some of the quilts do not pop as much as they could because they lack the contrast of using fabrics with different color values. It really stands out if your trip around the world just looks like a scrap quilt because it blends together too easily. Sixth, although the quilt as you go method looks faster I think some more detailed information about pinning all those layers in place might be in order. I liked this book because it is KID FRIENDLY. However, I liked Barbara J. Eikmeier books much better. This one will sit nicely on the self next to hers but in no way comes close to replacing it. Too bad the two of these ladies couldn't put a book together with Eleanor Burns. That would be one awesome book. In all it is a cute book but it could have been so much better. I do think it has a lot of kid appeal so I am going to give it a break on the rating. It does have some great tips on teaching kids how to quilt.

This review is from: 90-Minute Quilts: 15+ Projects You Can Stitch in an Afternoon (Spiral-bound)
I just got 90-Minute Quilts yesterday. It has so many beautiful and creative quilts in it. I have picked up many tips and ideas already! It's a wonderful book, especially as to the self-binding border technique and the fabulous fabric pattern ideas. You really have to see it to believe it! Meryl Ann Butler truly is an artist. This book has gotten my creativity juices flowing. Making a quilt in 90 minutes is an awesome concept - I can't wait to get started!
