Comprehensive worksheets and software procedures for implementing QS 9000, the automobile industry's comprehensive standards for quality. The QS9000 Documentation Toolkit helps suppliers of automotive parts, service parts and finishing services meet QS 9000 quality standards and satisfy their customers in the U.S. automobile industry. This book/CD-ROM package provides the tools needed to produce QS 9000 Level B (or Level 2) quality procedures. QS 9000 supplements ISO 9001 with automotive-specific requirements for contract review, design control, document and data control, purchasing, product identification, process control and many other areas. Companies that supply product to GM, Chrysler and Ford must comply; their subcontractors may need to comply as well. The book's worksheets, Microsoft Word and WordPerfect templates and equivalent printed forms will evoke discussions at planning meetings, help suppliers understand their existing processes, and be useful in writing new procedures.
In August 1994, the Automotive Industry Action Group published Quality System Requirements, QS 9000. Representatives from the automotive industry had worked over four years to develop a quality system requirement that used the ISO 9001, 1994 Edition as a baseline. The QS 9000 supplements the ISO 9001 with automotive-specific requirements. Those requirements are intended to enhance overall automotive quality while reducing variation and waste throughout the entire supply chain. In February 1995, a second edition of the QS 9000 was published to clarify the intent of the manual and to keep the manual current. The QS 9000 Documentation Toolkit reflects the February 1995 edition of the QS 9000. We also used the supporting documents of the QS 9000 in developing the worksheets and procedures. These documents are: Advanced Product Quality Planning and Control Plan Reference Manual Production Part Approval Process Potential Failure Mode and Effects And Analysis Measurement Systems Analysis Statistical Process Control Reference Manual These documents are available from the Automotive Industry Action Group. You can order the documents by calling (810) 358-3003. We suggest that you obtain a full set of these documents and read them before starting your QS 9000 efforts. The QS 9000 is a quality system requirement for internal and external suppliers of production parts, service parts, and finishing services (heat treat, paint, etc.). In other words, if you supply product directly to General Motors, Chrysler, or Ford that is put on a car, you need to comply with the QS 9000. If you are a subcontractor to a supplier that furnishes product directly to General Motors, Chrysler, or Ford, your customer may require you to comply to the QS 9000. In either case, if you have any questions regarding the applicability of your product, contact your customer's quality representative or purchasing office. Just like the ISO 9000 Documentation Toolkit, this book is designed to evoke discussion at planning meetings, to be annotated and written in, and to be employed in the writing of procedures. Basically, this book has two parts-the worksheets and the software procedures. We are providing the software procedures in WordPerfect for Windows 6.0, Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0, and Microsoft Word for Macintosh 6.0. Hopefully, you can use one of these formats. If not, this book contains the printed version of the procedures. Just one note, the diskette is formatted for MS-DOS. So, if you are using it with a Macintosh computer, you will need software installed on your Macintosh that reads MS-DOS disks. When we decided to provide the QS 9000 Documentation Toolkit, we wanted all of you who had previously used the ISO 9000 Documentation Toolkit, to be able to quickly identify the areas that require change to be QS 9000-compliant. Therefore, we identified QS 9000-specific areas in normal type and ISO 9000 areas in italic type-this is consistent with the format of the QS 9000. If you already have an IS0 9000-based system, you can focus on the QS 9000-specific requirements. If you are pursing QS 9000 without prior ISO experience, you can use all the information and readily differentiate the two documents. A word of advice for all of you pursuing QS 9000. Understand your processes and your product development system. If you do not understand your own product development system, developing an implementation strategy for QS 9000 will be difficult and overly time-consuming. The Advanced Product Quality Planning and Control Plan Reference Manual defines the customer's requirements for quality planning, but you must incorporate these and the customer's program timing requirements into your product development cycle. Remember, a basic tenet of any successful quality system is to understand your processes. The approach used in this book demands that a company work as a team in defining its quality system. The worksheets interpret the QS 9000 by specifying what you need to do and also demonstrate real-life strategies. They force you to think about who's responsible for an activity, the recordkeeping, and follow-up activities. The worksheets were originally developed to gather data. As they evolved, the worksheets became a tool that facilitated discussion and encouraged employee participation. We've been involved in lively discussions when staff at all levels contributed to the worksheets. Companies have discovered that open communication and the opportunity to improve how things were done became one of the unmeasured benefits of seeking QS 9000 certification. Putting together a documented system not only requires time to understand the standard and a commitment to implement changes, but the skills to write it all down. Word-processor templates in both Microsoft Word for IBM-compatibles or Macintoshes and in WordPerfect for Windows have been derived from the worksheets. You can simply edit the formatted templates to create your QS 9000 documentation. The templates include the elements of document control required by the ISO 9001 and QS 9000. Using the master template, you can write individual procedures or split the ones provided with this book. The templates contain more detail than you'll need on the assumption that it is easier to use the DELETE key than to create original text. You may find, however, that you need to expand on the procedures because of the complexity of your organization or product. If you do, remember, procedures need to identify who, what, when, and where. This book provides the tools to produce your ISO 9000 and QS 9000 Level B quality procedures. To comply with the standard, you will also need to write a Quality Manual, quality plans including control plans, and the appropriate work instructions. We need to thank the many people and organizations that have helped us assure the usefulness of the QS 9000 Documentation Toolkit. Our thanks to Larry Rainwater, Jan Black, Brenda Clifton, and Don Turner for helping us validate the QS 9000-specific questions in the worksheets; Nikki Hornbacker and the staff of Progressive Strategies & Systems Inc. for their support; and, Sue Miller for helping us format this book. Our families have unselfishly given us the encouragement and time to write and edit this book. (Thanks Pat, Grady, and Jodie!) Finally, we hope this book will help you develop a system that conforms to your customer's requirements and helps you implement a functional quality system to support your efforts well into the next century. What she did know was that her clients found the ISO 9000 Documentation Toolkit a benefit to jump-starting implementation of their quality system. These clients, however, needed more. They were going for QS 9000. The enormous amount of time and effort Kathy and her staff spent to make the QS 9000 Documentation Toolkit a reality is evident in the completeness of this text. I am proud to add this book to the ISO solutions series. Were it not for Kathy, this book would not have been written. Future plans for a QS 9000 Quality Manual Developer to help write the quality manual for QS 9000 worksheets, which can be filled in with your word processor and document control software are in the works.
