4.0 out of 5 stars Super-thin, and works on planes too
Prior to the introduction of this unit in January 2008, Lenovo had a very bulky power supply that would work on AC/Planes/Cars. This unit is exceptionally thin, thinner than the thinist part of the Lenovo X60/61s. With its AC cord and the cord that plugs into the PC, it weighs 14 oz. It comes with 3 tips for different Lenovo laptops. The only thing I wish they had done...

I bought this power cord for the simple reason that I travel alot and wanted something compact that would work on airplanes. This item does an adequate job at these two tasks. The only thing I wish they had done differently is that cord to the laoptop is thicker (heavier) than it should be (thicker than the cord that is found on the standard non-combo adapter). Compared to the IGo, which is not as wide as this new adapter, but at least twice as thick, this unit is much better. Compared to the thin Kensington, the unit is about the same thickness, but a bit smaller in other dimensions, does not get hot, and has a much longer cord to connect to the AC socket (about three feet), so it is much easier to use in hotel rooms where the Kensington is often hard to plug in. In short, the best combo adapter for your Lenovo computer on the market.

I bought this power cord for the simple reason that I travel alot and wanted something compact that would work on airplanes. This item does an adequate job at these two tasks. However, having to use a extra adapter between the cord and computer causes it to hang way to far off of the back of the laptop. You have to be very careful as it could be broken or knocked off very easily. The extra piece is also less reliable as I have several times had to fiddle with the cord to get a connection. One other problem is that the cord itself is too short for a lot of conference room or office applications. It always seems to come up 12 to 18 inches short of the power outlet.

At this point this power cord is left connected to my docking station in the office. For travel I simply carry the original cord and I bought a bigger battery for working on airplanes. The original cord works better and the size difference is minimal at best.

Unfortunately I can't say that I would recommend this product, especially at this price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy for more than $40, November 25, 2009
This review is from: 90W Slim Ac/dc Combo Adapter (Personal Computers)
I bought this slim charger over ebay. To my surprise, it is actually slightly heavier than the standard charger and is larger overall, albeit slimmer. The cord is also 1 to 2 feet shorter. Thus, with this charger you have a trade off of slimness for price, volume, weight, and cord length. I paid $80 for this adapter after shipping costs but believe it is worth under $40.

THe AC/DC adapter is so much more useful than the standard AC adapter that comes with the Lenovo laptops. I always need more than one adapter and when we decided to travel to Europe and I was faced with extended time in the plane, I bit the bullet and bought this adapter.

Not only can it handle AC voltages in the Europe (220V) and US (110V), but it can handle DC power through a cigarette light adapter (12v) and the DC jacks that some airline companies install on their seats (20v?). It can also power a variety of devices. I've not investigated the full extent of the multitude of add-on tips and the versatitlty of the optional Y-adapter to power two devices simultaneously, but it is all there.

In normal use as an AC adapter, this unit gets quite warm to the touch. When using it as a DC adapter (in a car) the cigarette lighter connector got very hot and the spring-loaded tip was hot enough to leave a blister.
I seems that the main unit while thin could get less "wide." It's much wider than the standard 90W adapter and longer too. As others have mentioned, the cable connecting it to the laptop is thick and bulky, hard to fold back up and doesn't fit well in the case. One plus is the adapter tips which allows it to charge the T/X/A30/40 series with one and the 60 series with the other.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy, but too heavy, April 27, 2010
This review is from: 90W Slim Ac/dc Combo Adapter (Personal Computers)
I bought this thinking that it would be more portable than the 65w adapter that came with my x200t but that is not the case. The 65w adapter weighs 295g with the power cord while the 90w slim adapter weighs 460g with the power cord. It may be slim, but it is also longer and wider then the 65w. Also, though it can power more devices it does not come with the splitter cable to do so. It is another item, plus you still need to buy the specific tip for your phone, etc. It will not charge the computer any faster then the 65w adapter, I tried both and they gave the same time till full charge. The piece that plugs into the computer for the 90w is also twice as long and heavy as the one for the 65w because of its modular nature. I would not be able to use it with the tablet unless it was sitting on a desk. I am afraid that moving the computer too much will loosen the connection over time; a similar problem I had with another computer where I eventually had to have the power input re-soldered to the motherboard. Unless you really need the DC car adapter or have multiple Thinkpads with different power tips I would save your money. At least I have two chargers now, one for my backpack and one for the house/car. Guess which one I'm leaving home.

2.0 out of 5 stars Plug that goes into Laptop is way too long, July 25, 2009
By

This review is from: 90W Slim Ac/dc Combo Adapter (Personal Computers)
The adapter works as advertised, but is VERY annoying. The Chinese engineers who designed this obviously had no idea how people use laptops.

The cord that plugs into the laptop has a large special plug, that plugs into a huge adapter (three are included) for your particular type of Thinkpad.

You end up with the power cord sticking straight out the back of the laptop about an inch and a half. Extremely annoying, and sooner or later the special plug on the power supply, the special adapter plug, or the power jack in the PC is going to break (there's a lot of sideways leverage with a plug this long).

It would be usable if it had a "right angle plug," but it doesn't - so it may technically be usable for a while but it's going to break, or break the actual laptop pretty quickly.

I'm sure Lenovo doesn't care, since they'll just charge you to fix the laptop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good little charger, November 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 90W Slim Ac/dc Combo Adapter (Personal Computers)
When I received this charge, I was impressed at how thin it was. As everyone else mentions, to make this product as this as it is, the manufactures have made this wider than your average power brick. When using the charger on AC power, it gets really warm, and mine also emits a slightly audible buzzing sound. When in a noisy environment, it is unnoticeable, but when I am sitting by myself in an empty room, it is quite annoying. When using this adaptor on DC power, it does not get warm at all, and I can't tell if it still buzzes over the sound of my engine.

The one thing that I like about this design is how thich the lead cable is. Others dog on this fact but I love it. It is a stiffer cable than the stock one which leads me to believe that it will be harder for the cable to break right at the connection to the laptop adaptor like my old one did.

There are two things that I dislike about this charger: 1) The overall lenght of the cables is to short. My old broken adaptor is almost twice as long as this one. I find myself having to be very close to a power outlet and feel somewhat tethered. 2) When the proper tip is placed on the end of the universal lead, it makes this big bulky connector that has to plug into my laptop. It is almost 3 inches long before the cable can start to flex.

Hope this is helpful to someone, -TJ

This Lenovo 90W Slim AC/DC Combo Adapter works as specified from AC (plug it in, duh!) and DC (plug it in, duh!) I've used it here at home and in the car. I plan to use it overseas (it is specified to work from 100 to 240 vAC, so it will work in Europe with the necessary plug adapter due to the differences in plug connections, without the power converter unit.

I hope to be able to use it on the plane but we'll have to see if we get seats with power plugs! That isn't Lenovo's fault, so I'll leave it there.

Works as specified, what more could you want? Maybe for this Combo Adapter to be the supplied ThinkPad power supply?
